Nintendo has already released a number of high-profile games for the 2022 Switch, and will release quite a few strategy and tactical games in the coming period, especially turn-based strategy and tactics games. Here are some of the Switch strategy games that have been confirmed to be released in 2022, so let's see if there are any favorites.
Triangle Strategy – March 4, 2022
Triangular Strategy comes from the excellent Octagon Traveler team, and the game uses the same HD-2D graphics style to look great on Nintendo's handhelds (and elsewhere).
It's a game reminiscent of the classic Final Fantasy: Strategy Edition, but at the same time has plenty of modern elements and a seemingly interesting narrative and selection mechanics. The presentation of Triangle Strategy was very exciting, and various tweaks and improvements were made based on fan feedback.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp - Spring 2022
The game was originally scheduled for release in December 2021, but Nintendo and developer WayForward decided to postpone it until spring 22. My Nintendo Store UK suggests that the game is likely to arrive on April 8.
As the name suggests, this combines the content of the first two games in the series, but is completely redesigned and used with new visuals, with a few other quality improvements. As an old IP, perhaps many players have only heard of but have not experienced it, so I hope that this remake can allow more players to enjoy this game.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope – 2022
Mario + Mad Rabbit Kingdom Battle was an early collaboration between Switch and Ubisoft, but the end result was great, so this sequel released in 2022 is enough to look forward to.
While some aspects borrow from games like XCOM, and some twists and turns in Mario's moves and attacks, it still makes its way with excellent character-specific abilities. Given that the previous game is very fascinating, the prospects for this sequel are also very optimistic.
Metal Slug Tactics – 2022
When the game was first unveiled for PC in the summer of 2021, many people, especially veteran Metal Slugs, wanted to launch a Switch version. Unsurprisingly, publisher Dotemu has been helpful, which means that Switch will have plenty of classic Metal Slug action games as well as this new strategy game.
However, all that can be seen in the trailer at present is an equidistant oblique top-down view, the series' consistent funny military tone, some stylized map design, and excellent boss battle design.
Marvels Midnight Suns – 2022
Marvel's Children of the Night, which has a development pedigree from Firaxis Games (best known for the XCOM series), was postponed until the second half of this year (originally scheduled for March), which also helped to fully refine it at launch.
The concept, IP, and mechanics of the game all look alluring, and the only thing that matters is how well the Switch version performs. XCOM 2's ported version of the Switch may be a bit rough, but if a Switch version is planned from day one, there's a good chance there will be a solid optimization.
Of course, there will definitely be more games to be revealed in 2022, and there will undoubtedly be some other pretty good side-way games. Following 2019's Fire Emblem: Wind and Snow Moon, perhaps 2022 will bring us another Fire Emblem surprise.
