Tesla recalled all pre-2021 Model 3s, exposed cameras and other issues

The total number of recalls is as high as 470,000.

Electric cars have been more popular than at any time in the history of the auto industry in the past five years, but in the short period of time, the small flaws that have been popping up on the products offered by emerging car companies have caused people to worry.

Just after the Christmas holiday, the US vehicle management department announced a large-scale Tesla recall.

According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total of 475318 vehicles are subject to recall, including 356309 Model 3 and 119109 Model S. Tesla estimates that only 1% of Model 3 vehicles will actually show defects, and the proportion of model S vehicles recalled will have defects in 14%.

The recall affects model years ranging from 2014 to 2021, and the total number of vehicles recalled is almost equivalent to Tesla's total car deliveries last year of 500,000.

Federal regulators have been discussing camera issues with the automaker, while investigating the electric car maker's driver assistance systems and other issues.

In the recalled Model 3, 1% of vehicles may have defects in the rearview camera. "Repeated opening and closing of the trunk lid" may cause excessive wear of the cable providing the rearview camera signal. If the cable core is separated due to wear and tear, "the rearview camera transmission is not visible on the center display". The document added that the loss of the rearview camera display could "increase the risk of collision".

The Model S recall is of particular concern, with problems affecting the engine cover. If it is turned on while driving, it blocks the driver's view.

Tesla told NHTSA in an official document that in the affected Model S cars, "the latch assembly of the front load compartment cover may be misaligned, preventing the secondary front load lid latch from joining."

Since the Model S's problem was misalignment rather than component damage, Tesla believed that repositioning the latch device at the service center would solve the problem. For affected Model 3 owners, Tesla promised to install new harnesses and guide protectors for free.

Tesla shares fell 3 percent in early trading, but then rebounded, and finally traded slightly to around $1,088.76.

Although occasionally met with complaints about quality, Tesla is clearly at the top of the auto industry in 2021. In this year when the global epidemic continues, all car companies have been affected by supply chain problems and "lack of cores", but for smarter electric vehicles, it is a period of rapid growth. Tesla has become the biggest winner in the industry because of its strong self-developed chips and vertical integration capabilities, making it not afraid of the "chip shortage", and this year's car production will be about 80% more than in 2020.

Semiconductor industry experts believe that as a relatively young car company, Tesla's advantage lies in designing vehicles from scratch, rather than adding parts piecemeal for decades, as many traditional automakers have done. As a result, Tesla was able to integrate the system, and many of the MCU chips in its products were self-developed.

But perhaps because of this, some unexpected problems will gradually appear in use.

This is the second time this month that NHTSA has taken Tesla-related action. Just before Christmas, the agency said it was investigating Tesla's software update, which allows front-row passengers to play games on the center-control large screen while the car is moving. Tesla responded quickly, promising another software update to lock in its passenger play function while the car was in motion. Other 2021 Tesla recalls cover software bugs in the Fully Automated Driving Beta (FSD) and the Central Control Large Screen of Death.

According to NHTSA, owners of the affected vehicles will receive specific notices by the end of February.
