1. GAC incubates and grows independently

What kind of company is Juwan Technology Research Institute? I believe that this is what many readers see here, after all, the Juwan Technical Research Institute has only been established for 15 months - it was established in September 2020.

"An independent technology company incubated by the GAC Group", everyone can understand the positioning of Juwan Technology Research in this way.

The introduction on the official website is "a high-tech company focusing on the research and development and production of advanced energy accumulators led by GAC Group, jointly funded by GAC Capital, the graphene technical team of GAC Research Institute and the third-party strategic partner shareholding platform."

At this point, everyone should understand that in addition to GAC Aian, Juwan Technology Research Institute is also a key project of the "Double Hundred Action" mixed reform of the state-owned enterprise reform of GAC Group, and it is also the first mixed ownership innovative high-tech enterprise incubated by GAC Group.

In July this year, Juwan Technology Research Institute has completed the pre-A round of financing of hundreds of millions of yuan jointly led by GF Securities subsidiaries GF Xinde, GF Qian and Guangzhou Financial Holdings Fund, with BOC Yuecai, Guangzhou Fund, Potential Energy Capital and other co-investments, and Potential Energy Capital as the long-term financial adviser for corporate financing.

Although it is a start-up, the research and development results of Juwan Technology Research have already met with us.

On September 30 this year, GAC AION V Plus was officially launched, which supports 480kW ultra-fast charging technology and is equipped with a version of graphene-based ultra-fast charging battery, and the hero behind it is Juwan Technology Research.

In addition, battery technologies and products such as "8 minutes full" and "1,000 kilometers of range" released at the GAC Technology Day last year also came from Pei Feng's team.

According to Pei Feng's introduction, since 2014, GAC Group has begun to accumulate technology at the battery material end and independently develop power batteries.

Pei Feng, who graduated from South China University of Technology in 2007 with a ph.D. and entered the GAC Research Institute, began to do GAC's first new energy mass production project in 2009 and began to do basic research and development of Sandian in 2011.

Before the official establishment of Juwan Technology Research Institute, Pei Feng was the director of the pilot technology department of the GAC Research Institute, and the Juwan Technology Research Institute at that time was still a "graphene technology application company" on the road.

In other words, the predecessor of Juwan Technology Research Institute should be the accumulation of sandian technology in the past ten years of GAC Group, coupled with the precipitation of battery cell technology in the past 7 years.

The task of independent formation of Juwan Technology Research can be summarized into two major plates: supercharge and battery. The core behind the two major plates is the unified three electric technology - by 2021, Juwan Technology Research has realized the self-development of core components such as battery cells, electronic controls, and even motors, motor controllers, etc.

Second, GAC Ningde era, or GAC IONITY?

The battery factory of Juwan Technology Research Institute is located in Nansha District, Guangzhou, and the battery pack factory has been put into full operation. The Nansha Pack production line adopts semi-automated production mode, with an annual production capacity of 4-5GWh, which can meet the battery pack supply of about 50,000 electric vehicles.

In addition, at present, Juwan's battery cells and modules are independently designed and produced by partners. Pei Feng said that the battery cell and module production capacity is currently 2GWh, which matches about 30,000 vehicles.

However, Juwan's self-produced batteries are also on the road, Pei Feng said that the first phase of the more than 500 acres of battery cell production base is expected to be completed and put into production in the first half of 2023, with a production capacity of 8GWh, corresponding to an annual output of about 120,000 vehicles.

"GAC's Ningde Era"? This is our first thought after receiving the message.

Pei Feng said that Juwan is different from Ningde. The vision of Juwan Technology Research has always been to solve the problem of "low charging efficiency". In order to solve this problem, Juwan needs to have a full chain of autonomous technology, from batteries to charging piles.

The technical difficulty of the whole chain lies in the battery end.

We did not ask about the specific technical principles, but it is certain that Juwan Technology Research Institute has mastered a variety of self-research capabilities, from raw materials, conductive agents, all the way to diaphragms, electrolytes, including processes have achieved new development.

Up to here, Juwan also behaves like a pure battery factory.

However, Pei Feng summed up Juwan Technology Research in this way: "GAC Group is taking out the entire supercharging plate for incubation, we believe that it has more commercial promotion value, and other research and development sectors will remain within the group."

In other words, the real business goal of Juwan Technology Research is to overcharge the masses.

Just yesterday, Juwan Technology Research announced a strategic cooperation with Guangdong Tianshu New Energy, according to the plan, the two sides will invest more than 1 billion yuan, in 2022-2024 three years, in 100 cities in China, jointly build 1000 supercharging stations.

The 1000 supercharge piles include both 3C (240kW peak) and 6C (480kW) versions. Pei Feng told us that the cost of the 3C supercharge pile is about 60% of the 6C, but the most critical "power cost per kW" is the same for the two supercharging stations.

Talking about this, Juwan is a bit like IONITY, with the ability to build self-developed supercharging stations.

But in addition to direct stationing, Juwan is also doing another thing: technology licensing.

Pei Feng said that at present, third-party charging pile companies such as special calls have been discussing the possibility of cooperation with Juwan, in addition to their own charging pile technology, they will also export technology to operators and pile companies.

So, how should Juwan Technology Research be positioned? Battery companies, charging pile companies, or?

Pei Feng's own answer is: "Our core technology is in the charging station and battery, and the charging network and ecology, we hope to build with everyone."

Third, how to solve the low charging efficiency?

In the first two paragraphs, we talked about what Juwan Technology Research is doing, and in this paragraph, we will talk about what Juwan Technology Research is thinking.

Interestingly, Pei Feng didn't think it was a good idea to make the cruising range to 2,000 kilometers. He believes that the pursuit of high endurance is a kind of thinking inertia, and with the passage of time, the necessity of endurance growth will weaken.

"If the fuel vehicle has a 3000 km endurance is very simple, it can be enlarged by 3 times the fuel tank, it is magnified by 3 times and is not as big as the current power battery, but it is not necessary", "The essence of the problem is that refueling is convenient and fast enough, and charging is fast enough, there will be no pursuit of mileage."

From the perspective of efficiency, Pei Feng believes that in the next decade, the core of the popularity of electric vehicles will be to solve the problem of charging convenience - "how to refuel now, how to charge in the future, when users have such a feeling, battery life is naturally not a problem."

Interview with Pei Feng, Juwan Technical Research Institute: How to refuel now, how to recharge in the future

So naturally we talked about another topic: the number of charging stations.

Pei Feng put forward another very interesting point: the power provided by the power grid to charge electric vehicles is mainly related to the ownership of electric vehicles, and has little to do with charging speed.

The logic of this sentence is that the number of electric vehicles determines the amount of electricity that needs to be obtained from the grid every day, and the charging speed only determines the efficiency of the electric vehicle from the grid, and does not determine the load of the electric vehicle on the grid.

He believes that the reason why more and more charging stations are being built is that the charging speed is not fast enough. "There are now 2,300 charging stations in Guangzhou, but only 700 gas stations. Why are there so many (charging stations)? Because everyone is charging slowly."

Under the same amount of ownership, even if the power of a single charging station becomes larger and the number of charging stations becomes smaller, the total power, that is, the total load on the power grid, will not change, "just that the power supply is more concentrated."

In the next three years, Juwan Technology Research will soon land 1,000 supercharging stations, some of which will be laid out in large and super large communities. "Gas stations cannot be built in the community, but supercharging stations can be, and one more scene can bring more convenience."
