Data from JATO Dynamics market researchers shows that the Tesla Model 3 is expected to be the best-selling pure electric vehicle in Europe in 2021.
The electric compact sedan sold 113,397 units in the European market in the first 11 months of this year, an increase of 84% compared to the same period in 2020.
In September 2021, the Tesla Model 3 became the best-selling pure electric vehicle in Europe for the first time that month, surpassing even popular hybrid models such as the Volkswagen Golf and Renault Clio.
As of November, the second best-selling pure electric vehicle in the European market was the Volkswagen ID.3, but it sold only 63,109 units (up 125% year-on-year), just a little higher than half of tesla Model 3 sales. The Renault Zoe was the best-selling pure electric vehicle in Europe in 2020, but ranked third with only 60,551 units sold between January and November 2021 (down 27 percent year-on-year).
According to Matthias Schmidt's European Electric Car Report, the market share of electric vehicles in the European market will reach a record 11% in 2021. In terms of brands, Tesla is predicted to become the number one electric vehicle brand in Western Europe this year, with sales of about 170,000 units. The figure includes Model Y SUVs that began importing from China in the second half of the year. It is worth mentioning that Model Y sales in November surpassed Volkswagen's ID.3 and ID.4.
However, the dominant electric vehicle market in Europe will also be the Volkswagen Group, which owns the Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Porsche and Cupra brands to sell electric vehicles in Europe, and is expected to sell about 300,000 units. Tesla is expected to come in second and stellantis group to third.
