Apple Spokesperson: Foxconn's India plant is in a probationary period and will send an independent auditor to evaluate

IT Home December 29 news, Indian media previously said that Apple supplier Foxconn's factory near Chennai, India, will continue to close for three days. Earlier, the plant suffered a food poisoning incident that sparked worker protests and was closed for a week.

An Apple spokesperson said Apple found that its supplier Foxconn's factories in southern India used dormitories and restaurants in some remote areas for employees did not meet its standards. Foxconn's Sriperumbudur facility in India's Chennai suburb of Sriperumbudur is in probation and will continue to monitor the situation closely; it will also send independent auditors to Foxconn's India facility for additional detailed assessments.

An Apple spokesperson said, "After recent concerns about food safety and accommodation conditions in Foxconn Sriperumbudur, we dispatched an independent auditor to conduct an additional detailed assessment."

"We found that some of the remote dormitories and cafeterias for employee use did not meet our requirements, and we are working with our suppliers to ensure that a comprehensive set of corrective actions is implemented quickly."

In addition, Foxconn said Wednesday it was restructuring its local management group at its Sriperumbudur plant in southern India after discovering some problems with its off-site dormitory facilities.

Factories in Tamil Nadu have been at the epicenter of large-scale food poisoning incidents, which at one point sparked employee protests, but it has also begun to draw attention to the living conditions of workers in dormitories near the factory.

IT Home understands that the factory is currently the main producer of iPhones in India. The Chennai factory has been shut down since December 18, and protests by employees and their families have blocked a local highway. Hon Hai said it would increase dormitory areas, replace bathing facilities, provide drinking water, and improve the working environment of the factory and the living environment of employees. In addition, the scale of the Chennai plant will be expanded to employ more employees.

Hon Hai also recently decided to increase its investment in foxconn subsidiaries in India by $350 million. According to market participants, this move is to expand the production capacity of Apple's iPhone.
