It is easy for the husband and the people to follow the Tao, but not to share the same fate. Therefore, the Ming Emperor came to the power, the Tao took the Tao, the Shen took the fate, the chapter was discussed, and the forbidden was punished. The incarnation of the people is also like God, discerning evil uses! Now the holy king is gone, the world is in chaos, the treacherous words arise, the gentleman has no power to come, there is no punishment to forbid, so it is also discerned. (Xunzi Zhengming, Chapter 22, 08)

It is easy for the people to regulate them with the right path, to bring them into line, but they cannot discuss with them why they should follow those norms. Therefore, the Ming Emperor ruled them with power, guided them with the right way, admonished them with orders, used reason to understand them, and restrained them with criminal law.

The incarnation of the people is also like God, discerning evil uses! Now the holy king is gone, the world is in chaos, the treacherous words arise, the gentleman has no power to come, there is no punishment to forbid, so it is also discerned.

So the people under his rule were indoctrinated as if they were dominated by the gods, so where else to ask why? Now that Emperor Shengming is dead, the world is in chaos, adultery is rife, and gentlemen have no power to rule over them, and no criminal law to restrain them, so all kinds of arguments have come out.

This is what Confucius said in the Analects of Tabor:

For the people, they only need to know what to do and how to do it, and there is no need to tell them why they should do it.
