Shun: Human feelings are not very beautiful, why ask Yan! The wife is filial to her relatives, lustful and trustworthy to friends, and knightly and loyal to the king. Human affection! Human affection! It's not beautiful, so why bother! The meritocracy is not. (Xunzi Sexual Evil Chapter 23, 17)

Yao asked Shun: What about the common sense of man?

Is that the common sense of man?

Shun replied: The common sense of man is very bad, so why ask? With a wife and children, it is not very filial to the parents, and the so-called married daughter-in-law forgets the mother. When the desire for hobbies is satisfied, it is not very trustworthy to friends. There is a piece of advice, do not do business with friends, the founding fashion can work together, but once you make money, often because of the uneven distribution of benefits, the friendship boat will turn over. The knighthood is satisfied, and it is not very loyal to the monarch. As officials get bigger and bigger, their salaries get higher and higher, and they don't think about returning, but they corrupt the country and become less and less loyal to the country. This is all human nature! What a human nature! It's not good, so why ask? Only virtuous people will not do this.

If you can't be public and forget selfish, at least we must maintain a bottom line: self-interest without harming others. Etiquette and law maintain this bottom line. Many things are excusable and unforgivable to reason and law, precisely because what they do is beneficial to themselves and harmful to others, which undermines the civilized order of the harmonious operation of society.
