Recently, the developers of the open source game engine Godot announced a new grant from Meta Reality Labs. The grant adds new features and supports more devices.

Meta funded Godot to help develop AR/VR game engines

Godot is a cross-platform, open source 2D/3D game engine. In December 2020, Meta Reality Labs funded Godot to develop support for OpenXR, as well as expand the VR input motion system, mobile Vulkan rendering and optimization, and more. With previous grants, development work such as OpenXR support has been advanced.

For the grant, Godot said half of it will be used by further development teams to build cross-platform OpenXR support to help developers build engaging, immersive content. For the other half of the funding, it will be used to develop AR/VR editing capabilities to further facilitate the development work of XR developers, with the goal of being able to run on standalone devices such as Meta Quest, just as Godot can now run the editor in a browser.
