Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China issued a newly revised "Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation", which requires that from January 1 next year, newly produced passenger cars must be equipped with EDR systems, that is, driving event recorders. That is to say, now that we buy new cars, the original factory is forced to bring its own "black box"!
Everyone knows that the black box on the plane is used for accident analysis, and the investigators only need to find the black box and make a professional analysis of the content recorded inside, so that the cause of the accident can be accurately found out, and the distinction between mechanical failure and human operation is caused.
So does the EDR equipment that our country is forced to install this time have the same effect?
Is the EDR system good for our car owners?

The masters who have watched the documentary "Aerial Catastrophe" know that once the plane has an accident, the search and rescue personnel will first retrieve the information in the black box to analyze and find out the cause.
Similarly, next month's mandatory EDR is also this "black box" function.
The EDR system (Event Data Recorder) literally means a driving recorder, and although the EDR and the "driving recorder" (CDR) we know as it are only one word apart, they are really two different products. It can not only record video and sound, but also collect driving data at the time of the incident.
In the normal and smooth driving of the car, the EDR defaults to the "sleeping state", when the vehicle suddenly and violently moves laterally (such as high-speed driving, a sharp blow in the direction) or vertical sudden violent movement (such as high-speed driving, suddenly and vigorously braking), it will "wake up" EDR, it will start to record the important operation data of the vehicle in an instant, and maintain it for a period of time.
The data content mainly records the key operating data of the car in the three stages before, during and after the collision (including engine speed, vehicle speed, throttle pedal depth, brake pedal pedal pedal depth, brake system tubing pressure, steering wheel angle, transmission gear, and whether and when the airbag is turned on.
That is to say, as long as the EDR data is retrieved afterwards, the cause and effect of the accident can basically be reproduced: how fast the car was at that time, whether it was speeding, the vehicle suddenly hit the direction, or braked sharply, and then how the steering wheel turned, whether the driver stepped on the accelerator or stepped on the brake, how hard (how deep) the pedal was, and whether the brake lights were on or off...

The real reason for the state to make EDR into the national standard and mandatory promotion is related to the increasing number of motor vehicles in China and the increasing number of drivers in recent years. We consulted the official data given by the Ministry of Public Security, as of December 3, 2021 (this year), the number of motor vehicles in China reached 393 million, and the number of drivers reached 479 million, followed by an increase in the number of traffic accidents year by year.
Moreover, with the continuous popularization of new energy vehicles, a new "accident form" has emerged - the vehicle is out of control! Whether it is a bicycle accident or a double-car or multi-car accident, many news can always hear the owners complaining: it is not that I operated improperly, but that I had no problem operating at that time, it was that the car did not listen to the call, and the car was out of control!
Once the owner makes such a claim, the traffic police department has to find a way to investigate, through the technical identification of the vehicle, and finally give the most logical scientific explanation. If the owner insists that he has stepped on the brakes and has pressed the pedal with full force. Then the police need to check the cameras near the scene (if any), see if the brake lights of the vehicle are on, and check whether the road surface has left brake marks.
The reason is simple to say, but it is often difficult to do. There was no camera nearby, or the camera was broken; then it rained again, leaving no trace on the road... The difficulty of investigation and evidence collection has skyrocketed.
The data recording function applied by the EDR system, the first is to block the possibility of the driver's own operation mistakes, but afterwards do not admit it; the second is that if the vehicle really fails, there can be enough evidence chain, and the car company can't rely on it; the third is to make it impossible to deliberately fake the accident and cheat the insurance.
Overall, it is indeed a good guarantee for car owners, and it is estimated that there will be a lot less "road rage, car bullying, and gasser dogs" in the future.
Most new energy vehicles are already equipped with EDR as standard

Although the EDR system will be mandatorily equipped with new cars from next month, not all cars will be equipped with a complete EDR system.
As for why? This is why the new regulations give manufacturers a period of time to implement the plan step by step.
In fact, it can be seen from the fact that the bill must not be modified, and from 2022 onwards, if there is no new car with a standard EDR system, it is necessary to force the standard "video driving record system". And this thing is what we know as it is - the dashcam!
In the current era of fuel vehicle ownership, the actual role of EDR is not large, after all, most of the fuel vehicles are mechanical structures, through the driving recorder and the accident situation at the scene, it is generally possible to restore the accident scene. But now that the state is vigorously promoting electric vehicles, EDR has become a kind of just need, after all, the complex electronic control system and automatic driving technology of new energy vehicles will produce a series of safety hazards such as vehicle and machine system failures, driver misoperation, and network information security.
And EDR system as an "emerging thing", its OE procurement cost is very high, just the entry-level Bosch EDR system will cost 7100 US dollars / set, so it can be seen that a general direction, electric new energy models will take the lead in standard EDR, and traditional fuel vehicles will first be equipped with video driving recorder transition, and then to the next stage with a full set of EDR system.
The implementation rules of the regulations here also confirm Tiger's conjecture:
From 2023 onwards, for newly applied models that can record and read A+ B level data elements, Class A includes 23 data that must be recorded such as ABS system status and longitudinal acceleration; Class B includes 50 data that must be recorded for the relevant positions of equipment, such as lateral acceleration and vertical acceleration.
In general, this mandatory requirement for new cars to configure EDR symbolizes another breakthrough in the field of automotive safety in China, data collection is not only conducive to big data security, but also can well avoid the occurrence of traffic accidents, reduce the responsibility after the accident determination disputes.
