On December 21, it was reported that TSMC's plan to build a new chip factory in Japan has been approved by the Japanese side, and the new plant is expected to start construction in 2022 and is expected to be officially put into operation in 2024. It is reported that the reason why the project can be moved forward quickly is that Japan may support and fund it, but the specific strength is not clear. However, it is reported that TSMC will invest a total of about 800 billion yen (about 44.9 billion yuan) in the plant, of which Japan may fund up to half of it.

According to current news, TSMC's new plant will be used to produce chips related to automobiles, camera image sensors and other products in the 22-nanometer and 28-nanometer processes.

There is no doubt that this year's chip shortage has affected the sales of car companies. Recently, people familiar with the matter revealed that the global sales of volkswagen group this year are expected to be less than 9 million units, for which Volkswagen has to adjust its target to 9 million units. From January to November this year, Volkswagen's cumulative global sales were 8.1688 million units. Even if the target is lowered, Volkswagen's goal this year may be difficult to achieve.

According to TSMC CEO Wei Zhejia predicted in October this year, the chip shortage problem will continue next year.
