22 of Xu Beihong's precious original works were first exhibited at Xu Beihong Art Museum (Chongqing).

Xu Beihong is a pioneer and founder of a new generation in the history of Chinese art in the 20th century. In November 1937, Xu Beihong moved west with the Central University to Chongqing, and his relationship with Chongqing began. From 1937 to 1946, a number of paintings reflecting the indomitable spirit of the Chinese people during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression were born in Chongqing. These years in Shancheng became an important period in Xu Beihong's artistic career.

The theme of this exhibition is "Great Wonder to Beauty", which is taken from the artistic concept of "painting is a small skill, but it can be beautiful now, create a big wonder, not perseverance, hard work is not easy to succeed" adhered to by Xu Beihong. The exhibition adopts a variety of methods such as "original exhibition + historical documents + real scene restoration + scientific and technological interaction + virtual exhibition on the cloud", and exhibits a total of 22 original works, including his most representative large-scale works "Qun Ben" and "Herd Of Cows", the oil paintings "Xu Beihong Self-Portrait" and "Liao Jingwen Portrait" exhibited for the first time, as well as his "Ba's Poor Woman Picture" and "National Martyrdom" created in Chongqing, etc., and the types of exhibition include oil paintings, drawings, calligraphy, Chinese paintings and other representative works.

"Qun Ben" is Xu Beihong's famous masterpiece. He combined the brushstrokes of Western oil painting with the traditional Chinese boneless painting method, using a full and unrestrained ink color to outline the horse's head, neck, chest, legs and other large turning parts, and swept out the mane tail with a dry pen, so that the changes of thick and dry wet were natural, so that the lines of the horse's legs were strong and powerful, and the curve of the horse's abdomen, hips and mane was very elastic and dynamic... Xu Ji, grandson of Xu Beihong and director of the Exhibition and Collection Department of Xu Beihong Memorial Hall, said that the horse in the painting galloped forward, held high in the sky, hooves like a fly, full of inspirational power, which is not only a metaphor for the enterprising state of the Chinese nation, but also a spiritual symbol of Xu Beihong himself.

It is worth mentioning that this exhibition also exhibits for the first time two self-portraits of Xu Beihong and two portraits of his wife Liao Jingwen. They allow 30-year-old Xu Beihong and 20-year-old Liao Jingwen, 36-year-old Xu Beihong and 24-year-old Liao Jingwen to "meet" beyond time and space, so that their love and homeland feelings become eternal in Xu Beihong's art.

The exhibition will run from December 19, 2021 to February 18, 2022, of which December 19 to December 23 will be for professional visitors, and will be open to the public free of charge from December 24.
