Apple opens a new office to develop its own wireless chip Broadcom may be abandoned

According to foreign media reports, Apple is ready to design more chip components of its own. Apple has a new office, and its goal is to design components, replacing Broadcom and Skyworks components.

The new office is said to be in its early stages, but the ultimate focus will be on radio and RF integrated circuits, wireless SoCs, and semiconductors that connect Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Although Apple has designed the A-series and M-series chips, there are dozens of other chips in the electronic device, such as power management, USB connectivity, wireless charging and other chips. The iPhone 13 Pro teardown document shows that Skyworks and Broadcom provide many components for the iPhone, and Apple wants to design itself so that it can provide a customized solution for the hardware.

The most obvious example is the modem, now apple phone modem from Qualcomm, before Apple once switched to An Intel modem, the result of a lawsuit with Qualcomm. Apple makes no secret of wanting to develop its own 5G chips and doesn't want to use Qualcomm's. In 2019, Apple acquired Intel's smartphone modem business for about $1 billion, and Apple wants to develop its own modem, which will be put into the iPhone as soon as 2023.

Apple may design more of its own chips not just to further control the integration of hardware, but also to better control the supply of components. Chip shortages put pressure on Broadcom, further affecting Apple.
