His father was a police officer and his mother was a housewife. He grew up with great reverence for his father and his dream of becoming a policeman. Like many boys, he was very fond of toy guns when he was a child, often picking up toy guns to imitate his father's gun-holding movements, and he had no interest in learning, so his grades were very poor. When he was in middle school, there were 65 students in the class, and he was often ranked 63rd.
After middle school, the family underwent a major change, and his father, a police officer, was diagnosed with colon cancer when he was about to be promoted, and died soon after. No one could understand how hard his father's death had hit him, but from that moment on, his personality became unusually grumpy. Once, because of his emotional loss of control at home, he smashed a glass with a punch and picked up the glass shards and scratched his abdomen. From this time, it can be seen that Yu Fankun will not be able to control his emotions, resulting in violent behavior and even hurting himself.
In high school, he attended a two-year community college, but instead of finishing his studies, he dropped out of school to enlist in the army and became a member of the South Korean Marine Corps. It can be seen that he was born with the talent to be a soldier, and he was influenced by his father's ears, he has been very enthusiastic about military weapons since he was a child, and he is a "military fan". Extremely good at shooting, he was recognized as the best shooter of that year in the army.
As an adult, he entered the Coast Guard, retired as a police officer, and was the guard of the 101st Guard Regiment of the South Korean Presidential Palace, the elite police officer in South Korea.
South Korea was in a period of corruption in Chun Doo-hwan's regime, where popular protests and student movements against the regime were frequent. In order to quickly form its own violent institutions, the government at this time quickly recruited police officers from Jane to increase the number of police as a violent weapon to suppress the movement. Police induction tests, aptitude tests and psychological tests are just formalities or do not need to be tested at all. Local police recruiters, the most important thing is your force value, pick up the electric baton to become a riot police. Because of this, the Korean police at that time were filled with many people who had no professional quality, low level of professional ability, and even mental disorders. Among these policemen was Yu Fankun, who was extremely mentally unstable.
According to previous colleagues, Yu Fankun's temper can be said to be quite grumpy, especially after he drank, it was like a changed person, extremely fierce and terrible.
Colleagues around him gave him an appropriate nickname called "Crazy Tiger" and stayed away from him. Because of such poor interpersonal relationships, he was rated by his superiors as "unfit for security work" after just 8 months, and was demoted in 1981. Because his education was too low, he could only be transferred to the remote Yining County Police Station as an ordinary patrol officer who could not be in an ordinary patrol.
Police officers working at the grassroots level in the countryside have little room for promotion, because there are usually no major cases in the village, and it is difficult for them to make meritorious promotions. After joining the company, he found that most of them were old policemen, the equipment in the village was backward, there were mountains everywhere, and most of the elderly in the village were there. Because he was an outsider, he was placed in a dormitory. Even so, he made a local girlfriend, Quan Mou, within a month, and soon after they met, he moved into his girlfriend's house, but was opposed by the woman's family. In Korean society at that time, especially in the countryside, the folk customs were still very conservative. Yu Fankun told her family that she would go to the marriage registration as soon as possible, and when she had saved enough money, she would have another wedding. The actual situation is that because the salary is too small, Yu Fankun not only can't save money, but sometimes relies on his girlfriend's family to help, often living in cynicism, which makes him inferior and sensitive. Girlfriend Quan also felt his grumpy and irritable temper, and the two often quarreled.
But with no room, no money and no hope of promotion, his psychology began to distort, and he always felt that others looked down on him.
On April 26, 1982, the "Mad Tiger" became threatening. It was Yu Fankun's evening shift on this day, so he made up for sleep at home during the day. It just so happened that his girlfriend who was on the side saw a fly in his chest position, afraid of affecting his sleep, and did not think much about it before he slapped the fly to death.
Yu Fankun, who was awakened by the sudden slap, became furious, "I'm taking a nap, why are you beating me!" "Are you stupid when I think I don't know you look down on me?" "Why just hit a sleeping person?" Yu Fankun believes that his girlfriend deliberately woke him up, because he felt that he ate soft rice, could not earn back money, and did not show interest. Frustrated in self-esteem, he had a temper tantrum and had a fierce argument with his girlfriend, wrestling.
After the argument he slammed the door and went out drunk. After returning home at seven o'clock in the evening, he beat his girlfriend again, and the neighbors came forward to obstruct him and were also injured by his shots.
Yu Fankun, who had lost his senses, left the village in anger. He went to work at the police station, not realizing that his girlfriend and the nephew of another person who had been beaten were already waiting for him at the police station. I intend to question everyone loudly in front of everyone about his beating. Next to the police station is an ordnance warehouse, usually guarded by soldiers, but the key is in the hands of the police, the internal management system of the police station is a blank piece of paper, the relevant personnel left their posts without permission, and Yu Fankun, who did not sober up at night, directly got the key. I went to the weapons room and took two carbines, which were characterized by their lightness, small power, and low gunfire. He took 180 more rounds of ammunition and 7 grenades. After being fully armed, it was discovered by the police station, Yu Fankun fired two shots into the sky, and everyone retreated in an instant. He entered the police station and cut off the line of external calls, and when he went out, he met a passerby and shot him on the spot. Then pass by a market and shoot 3 people. Then he went to the post office and at 21:45 shot two female operators on duty and a security guard sleeping in the duty room, cutting off telephone lines and destroying all equipment that could communicate with the outside world. The village now became an island.
He then returned to his village, where he shot a woman, wounded a child and threw a grenade at the crowd at the party, killing 6 people.
After arriving at his girlfriend's house, he shot and killed everyone in the Quan family, but the girlfriend did not die at that time, and was sent to the hospital for rescue, leaving a testimony of the motive of shooting flies and Yu Fankun before he died.
Coincidentally, a local official passed by the village, saw the scene of his massacre of villagers, and rushed to the police station to report the crime, only to find that the lines had been cut off. So he immediately drove to the village a few kilometers away to call the police, and after knowing that Yu Fankun had weapons and equipment, the police station was also ready to fight with live ammunition. However, there is also the problem of unclear responsibility - no one knows where the keys to the armory are located.
The local government was afraid that this matter would alarm the top level and affect its career, and did not notify the army at the first time, but only wanted to solve it on its own. It took everyone 40 minutes to find a key.
During this time, Yu Fankun went to a farmer's market and killed 7 civilians who were shopping for vegetables on their way to the market. After hearing the gunshots and the wailing of people, nearby people locked their doors and turned off all the lights. Yu Fankun saw the situation and left directly.
Arriving at another village at 22:50 p.m., I found that the courtyard of one family was brightly lit and many people had gathered, and it was the owner of the house who had already entertained relatives and friends who had come to the funeral. The people in the courtyard were surprised to see him holding two guns in his hand, and he lied that he was a policeman on patrol, and also offered 3,000 won to express his condolences, so the owner invited him to sit down to eat. He took another 10 minutes of shochu and began to complain about his work with the people next to him, but instead of getting sympathy, he was yelled at by an equally drunk person who made you "Ah, why are you taking a gun to the funeral?" Yu Fankun raised his gun again in anger and shot the drunken man who was shouting and shouting. After getting up and shooting blindly, more than 20 people were killed in this courtyard.
After coming out of the family's yard, he specifically looked for a house with the lights on.
Passing a convenience store, he went in and bought two bottles of Coke. I handed one of the high school students next to me, and the two chatted for a while. Just as Yu Fankun got up to leave, he turned around and raised his gun to shoot the high school student. Then he went to the drugstore, hardware store, barber shop, and home, shot people when he saw people, and deliberately killed a woman who had pursued but rejected him.
At 1:30 a.m. on April 27, he suddenly felt sleepy and slept in the home of a family of people who had been killed.
At this time, the police, who had gathered more than 30 police forces, did not take the initiative to find him and subdue him. After a fruitless search, fearing that they would be shot in the open, and in consideration of their own safety, the police changed their strategy and hid in the shadows, waiting for Yu Fankun to appear on his own.
At 5:30 a.m., he walked to another village. Along the way, there was no police deployment and no one stopped him. He knocked on a random door and entered one of the homes and took a family of five hostage. When the police surrounded him, he did not hesitate and directly detonated the grenade in his hand, killing 4 people including him in the house, a total of 6 people in the house.
According to official statistics, Yu Fankun killed a total of 95 people on the spot in eight hours, 56 people died on the spot, 6 people died after being seriously injured and died after ineffective treatment, 33 people were injured to varying degrees, and many people were left with lifelong disabilities. Of the dead, the oldest was a 70-year-old and the youngest was a baby born a week ago.
In any case, the killing has left the villagers of these five villages in a state of panic and grief for a long time.
As soon as the incident was exposed, the whole of South Korea expressed strong condemnation of the incompetence and dereliction of duty of the local police, the slow response, the ineffectiveness of action, and the greed for life and fear of death. Angry people even demanded that then-South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan and the prime minister step down. In the end, South Korea's minister of internal affairs, Seo Jong, and the leaders of the local police system and the police officers involved in the case all resigned, which gradually calmed the anger of the people.
