On the first day of the war, the U.S. army poured 300,000 shells on the volunteer positions, and 6 rounds per second fell on the volunteer positions. The remaining troops of the Volunteer 45th Division were forced to retreat into the tunnel defenses.
On the night of October 19, the 6th Company of the 135th Regiment of the 45th Division was ordered to take advantage of the night to retake the surface positions of The 597.9 Heights. With limited artillery support, the 6th Company launched an attack on the enemy. Company Commander Wan Fulai led the whole company to conquer positions 5 and 6 successively. However, when these two positions were conquered, the 6th Company suffered heavy casualties, and by the time the No. 4 position was conquered, the 6th Company was already a little overwhelmed.
Seeing the situation, the superiors also sent Zhang Guangsheng, chief of staff of the second battalion, to lead 5 companies and 2 platoons to support. Wan Fulai and Zhang Guangsheng jointly conquered Position 4, and only Position 0 remained on the high ground in the hands of the enemy. At this time, only 16 people remained in the 6th Company (including 5 companies and 2 platoons) who could still fight, and on Position 0, the three sons and daughters of the US Army blocked the 16 people with fierce fire.
Wan Fulai and Zhang Guangsheng organized the remaining people into three demolition teams, but none of the three demolition teams could get close to the bunker and died on the road. The three men covered each other and alternately advanced, and after a fierce battle, they finally blew up the two sub-forts on the east and west sides, but just as everyone was on their way to the main fort in the middle, Wu Sanyang was unfortunately shot and killed, and Xiao Dengliang was also seriously injured. Huang Jiguang, who had lost his cover, was suddenly overwhelmed by the enemy's machine guns.
