Suzhou, December 12 (China News Network) -- On the evening of the 11th, Eslite Bookstore released the annual reading report of readers in Suzhou, Taipei, Hong Kong and Tokyo in 2021.
Founded in Taipei in 1989, Eslite Bookstore currently has nearly 50 locations in Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Tokyo, Japan. Since 2016, Eslite Bookstore has published a comprehensive reading report every year to analyze and reflect the reading preferences of readers in the four places.

Statistics show that in 2021, the proportion of new book sales in the four places varies, with Suzhou being the lowest 26% and Taipei being the highest 59%. In the view of Zheng Dexian, director of Eslite Bookstore Suzhou, Suzhou readers are not "fond of the old and tired of the new", but reflect that Suzhou, as a city with a deep historical and cultural heritage, readers are more unaffected by reading trends and maintain their own reading steps. In contrast, Hong Kong readers are susceptible to the star-chasing boom in reading, and fans' love houses and wu have led to the popularity of light novels and comics. It is worth mentioning that although the proportion of new book sales is the lowest, Suzhou has published more new books with 272,000 kinds, which exceeds the sum of the other three places, reflecting that the mainland is still strong in new book publishing.
In terms of the proportion of book sales, art and design books in Suzhou have maintained five consecutive years of growth, accounting for 29% of the local best-selling book types. Literary creation books ranked first in Taipei and Hong Kong with a proportion of nearly 18%, and in Suzhou accounted for 17%. The proportion of children's books in the three places is still stable at around 16%.
The impact of the pandemic has also been reflected in readers' preference for books. In Taipei and Hong Kong, the sales of psychological inspirational books account for a certain proportion; Suzhou readers choose to return to history and culture for spiritual precipitation, and the sales of historical and cultural books are still good. Wealth freedom in the post-pandemic era has become the focus of public attention, commercial books continue to receive attention, and sales of new books in the world economy have increased by 238% year-on-year. Interestingly, the sales of new books on children's finance and business education also increased by 200% year-on-year.

All kinds of classic works are still the "white moonlight" in the minds of readers. In Eslite Bookstore Suzhou's Top Ten New Books of 2021, Miyazaki "dominated the list" first and second with the first Chinese Simplified editions of "Totoro" and "Spirited Away" published in the mainland for the first time. The Harry Potter series, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the film's release, still sells well. With the release of the movie version, "Dune Six" also led to a 126% year-on-year increase in new science fiction products. New works by literary figures such as Yu Hua and Kazuo Ishiguro have boosted sales of older works, up 175% year-on-year.

Although the flow of people has been blocked due to the impact of the epidemic, the circulation of books between the four places has not stopped throughout 2021.
