Sony is showcasing a 4K resolution VR prototype or will be used in the next generation of PSVR products

At the "Sony Technology Day" product showcase event on December 7, Sony showcased an OLED display with a monocular resolution of 4K, which could be used for future VR headsets.

The display was developed at Sony's R&D center and does not belong to Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation division, and specific details can be seen in the video below. Sony says the device will be used in areas such as engineering, medical and entertainment.

The prototype features two 4K micro displays and new low-latency technology. The new miniature display achieves monocular 4K resolution and is smaller in size than most current VR displays. This will significantly reduce the size and weight of the headset itself.

While increasing the resolution, the prototype also significantly reduces latency, and Sony says the device will deliver a display response time of less than 0.01 seconds, making the picture smoother.

But to be clear, the technology is still in the prototype stage of design. There is not even a headband in the demo video, and it can only be used in the hand. In addition, Sony did not choose a wireless connection like the Oculus quest2, but still uses a traditional cable.

So the technology of this prototype will certainly not appear in the PS5 VR headset released in 2022, but it is likely to be used in the next generation of Sony VR devices.
