The "Anhui Southern Incident" was an anti-communist separatist act set off by reactionary diehards and seriously weakened China's anti-Japanese forces. In order to fight back against the reactionary diehards and unite the anti-Japanese forces, the New Fourth Army reorganized and expanded the original 4 detachments into 7 divisions, which were:
1. 1st Division
Formed by the merger of the 1st and 2nd detachments of the original New Fourth Army, it has 3 brigades and 8 regiments. The division first insisted on the anti-Japanese battle in central Jiangsu, smashed the Japanese army many times to "sweep up", and dealt a heavy blow to the Japanese and puppet armies.
2. 2nd Division
The division was formerly known as the 4th Detachment of the New Fourth Army, also known as the Gao Jingting Detachment. After its establishment, it fought for a long time in eastern Anhui and the east and west sides of the Jinpu Railway, posing a great threat to the transportation lines of the Japanese army.
3. 3rd Division
The division was formed by the combination of the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army, with 3 brigades under its jurisdiction, first operating in northeast Anhui and then expanding in all directions. After Japan surrendered, the whole division went to the northeast and became the main force of the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army.
4. 4th Division
The division was also formed by the merger of the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army, and the division commander Peng Xuefeng was active in the border areas of The three provinces of Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu. Soon after its establishment, it crushed the crazy invasion of the upper stubborn army.
5. 5th Division
The division was reorganized from guerrilla units that had been transferred to the outskirts of Wuhan, and most of the soldiers were young peasants from the border areas of Henan and Hubei, and their awareness of the War of Resistance was very high, and they could fight both flexible guerrilla warfare and large-scale mobile warfare, directly threatening the Japanese army in Wuhan.
6. 6th Division
This division was formed by the New Fourth Army, which remained south of the Yangtze River, persisted in guerrilla warfare in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang border areas, repeatedly smashed the "advance and suppression" of the Japanese army, and advanced to the vicinity of Nanjing and Shanghai, seriously threatening the Japanese army in central China.
7. 7th Division
The division was formed by a combination of the New Fourth Army and guerrilla units operating along the Yangtze River in Anhui. The division commander, Zhang Dingcheng, was later succeeded by Tan Xilin. After the establishment of the division, it consolidated the base area along the Yangtze River in Anhui and vigorously developed westward, once invading Wuhu. Later, it withdrew north to Lunan and was incorporated into the Shandong Field Army.
