Battle of Stalingrad: 2 million Soviet casualties and 1.5 million German casualties

author:Foreign perspectives

The Battle of Stalingrad was regarded by the Soviets as a great victory. But from the casualties of this battle, we do not feel that the Soviets have much advantage. In this battle, the Total Strength of the Soviets reached 3 million, with a survival rate of only one-third and casualties of 2 million, while the Germans only suffered 1.5 million casualties under the premise of investing 2 million. Like other battles on the Soviet-German battlefield, this battle was also a battle in which the Soviet casualties were higher. Why is it called a great victory?

Battle of Stalingrad: 2 million Soviet casualties and 1.5 million German casualties

It was the Battle of Stalingrad that broke up the German army as a whole. Although the Germans suffered fewer casualties than the Soviets, from then on the Germans lost a fresh force and the initiative on the Eastern Front. That's the deadliest thing. Since then, it is impossible for the German army to defeat the Soviet army on the eastern front, and can only find a way to fight a draw.

In 1942, the German army, which had been defeated from the Moscow front, began to regroup and began to operate caucasus oil fields based on Manstein's achievements in Crimea, while the Germans also divided their forces to block possible Soviet reinforcements. That's how the Battle of Stalingrad broke out. Supposedly, the Germans wanted to avoid urban street battles with the Soviets, but the name Stalingrad was too attractive. So the German high command ordered the Sixth Army to take Stalingrad.

The Sixth Army thus fell into the trap of Stalingrad and used its superior strength to engage in street battles with the Soviets. As a result, the Sixth Army fought until the winter, with the Germans mobilizing 1 million men to support them, while the Soviets mobilized 2 million men. Seeing that the situation was not good, Paulus wanted to retreat, but Adolf refused him, and Paulus, who had been carrying out the Führer's orders, could only obey.

In the end, Zhukov launched operation Uranus, using the gushing superiority of troops to crush the Soviet army, and the German Army Group South was even more extinct. The Germans carried out an elite strategy, and most of the 1.5 million people lost were elite Germans. The loss of these elites is irreparable.

In fact, the German attack on the Soviets was itself a small and broad adventure. Once the opportunity is lost, the battle will not be fought. What do you think?
