In December 1962, Guo Xiaochuan, then a special reporter of the People's Daily, accompanied Comrade Wang Zhen on an inspection of the Northern Wilderness. After witnessing the warriors' endless and enjoyable lives, he could not suppress his passion and created a long poem "Carved in the Land of the Northern Wilderness", which wrote about the hardships and joys of the pioneers' struggle with nature, and wrote about the love and lofty ideals of the people of the Northern Wilderness for the black land.
Located in a cold region, the Great Northern Wilderness is distributed in the Sanjiang Plain, Songnen Plain, Wanda Mountain and Xiaoxing'anling Area, named after its "barrenness". Here is one of the world's three major black soil belts, the soil is fertile, there is a "pinch the black soil oil flowers, a pair of chopsticks also sprouted" reputation. In 1947, in response to Comrade Mao Zedong's call to "establish a consolidated base area in northeast China," a group of military cadres from Yan'an and Nanniwan led their troops to the Beidahuang and made the first plough in the inaccessible ancient wasteland, thus opening the prelude to the development and construction of the Beidahuang.
The first plough of the Northern Wilderness
After the founding of New China, the state carried out organized development of the "Northern Wilderness". In January 1955, under the leadership of Wang Zhen, then the commander of the Railway Corps, the first farm of the Railway Corps, the 850 Farm, was established. In just two years, 17,000 officers and men of several divisions of the Railway Corps moved north and successively created 12 "eight" farms, including 852, 853, and 854.
In 1958, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held a meeting in Chengdu and made a historic decision, namely the Opinions on the Development of Military Reclamation Farms. Comrade Wang Zhen, who was already the minister of agricultural reclamation of the Republic at that time, personally led 100,000 demobilized officers and soldiers to advance into the northern frontier, and the northern wilderness ushered in a climax of development. Later, 100,000 graduates of colleges and universities, 200,000 young people from the mainland branches, and 540,000 urban intellectual youths threw themselves into the Northern Wilderness from all over the motherland. In this black land, the pioneers who went forward and succeeded them used their youth, sweat and even their lives to overcome many difficulties, produced a large amount of grain for the country, and built the "Northern Wilderness" that was rarely visited in the past into a beautiful and rich "Northern Cang".
Zhao Guochun, the first director of the Beidahuang Museum and chairman of the Beidahuang Writers Association, has worked in beidahuang for 43 years and is a witness and participant in the development and construction of beidahuang. Seeing the Great Northern Wilderness from the ancient wasteland to the Chinese granary, he said with emotion:
The development and construction of the Beidahuang has benefited from the party's leadership, and the development of the Beidahuang is the best example of the successful reclamation of the people's army under the leadership of the Communist Party.
Demobilized officers and men marched into the wasteland
One rice and one meal is related to the safety of the country and the happiness of the people. In late September 2018, when General Secretary Xi Jinping inspected the three northeastern provinces, he came to the Heilongjiang Agricultural Reclamation and Construction Sanjiang Administration Bureau to investigate, emphasizing that the rice bowl of the Chinese should be firmly in his hands at all times. He picked up a bowl of rice in both hands and said meaningfully, "Chinese grain!" Chinese rice bowl! ”
Since the beginning of development and construction, the Beidahuang Agricultural Reclamation has produced more than 780 billion kilograms of grain, handed over and sold more than 640 billion kilograms of commodity grain to the state, stabilized the comprehensive production capacity of grain at more than 40 billion kilograms, and transferred about a quarter of the total grain transferred from various provinces in the country, making major contributions to the Chinese to firmly hold their own rice bowls. While creating huge material wealth for the country, beidahuang people have also created valuable spiritual wealth - the enduring spirit of beidahuang.

The spirit of the Great Northern Wilderness was cultivated and tempered under specific historical conditions and extremely difficult circumstances, and was summarized into 4 sentences and 16 words, which is: hard work, courage to open up, consideration of the overall situation, selfless dedication. For more than 70 years, the Beidahuang has undergone earth-shaking changes, changing the production mode and living environment, and what has not changed is the spirit of the Beidahuang passed on from generation to generation.
