But at this moment, Zhuang Changgong, the third president of National Taiwan University since it was accepted in 1945, actually left his post and slipped away.
The new principal candidate has made the authorities think hard! Finally, the Kuomintang government decided to appoint Fu Silai as the principal.
It turned out that during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Fu Si Nian had served in the Southwest United Congress. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he served as the acting president of Peking University for one year, and made great contributions to the reception and restoration of Peking University. Moreover, he was originally appointed as the president of Peking University, but he refused. At this time, it is most appropriate to let him be the president of National Taiwan University.
However, just as he refused to be the president of Peking University, Fu Sinian also refused to be the president of NTU this time, and he did not want to be any acting president.
At that time, Fu Sinian was in charge of the Institute of History and Linguistics of the Academia Sinica, and he was also very busy in order to relocate Taiwan, sometimes eating badly and sleeping badly, and he simply did not have the energy to rectify the dilapidated National Taiwan University. Not to mention that Fu Si Nian had high blood pressure and briefly went to the United States for treatment in June 1947. In addition to physiological factors, Fu Sinian also had suicidal thoughts many times because of the successive defeats of the Kuomintang.
After much persuasion, Fu Si Nian regained his educational ideals, so in November 1948, he formally accepted the appointment of the Kuomintang government and became the fourth president of National Taiwan University, regardless of his personal health.
Fu Sinian's reputation in academic and political circles is very high, and he is the only one who dares to erlang's leg in front of Chiang Kai-shek and take a pipe, which shows how courteous Chiang Kai-shek treated him.
Fu Si was a student commander of the "May Fourth Movement" and a standard-bearer of the New Culture Movement when he was a student; later he studied in Europe for seven years, and after returning to China, he promoted the establishment of the Institute of History and Linguistics and served as its director, and then presided over the excavation of the Yin Ruins oracle bones, laying the foundation for Chinese archaeology.
In terms of personality, Fu Sinian was jealous and hateful, and he once wrote articles attacking the corrupt clique of Kong Xiangxi and Soong Ziwen's family, forcing Chiang Kai-shek to pull them down from the position of chief executive. However, Fu Si Nian insisted on not entering politics.

Before Fu Sinian took over from NTU, the position of principal was already three different people, and the three predecessors were all picky and left because things were difficult. National Taiwan University can be described as congenitally bad and acquired disorders. At the beginning of my term of office, I had to face a surging wave of enrollment! After 1949, kuomintang military and political personnel and their families withdrew to Taiwan in large numbers, where the number of college students and middle school students was so large that the number of people required to enroll in the school was several times higher at once, and it was difficult for Taiwan universities to bear it at all. In particular, there are also the children of some powerful people, who obviously have very poor grades, but also ask to enter Taiwan University, and once they are rejected, these people will be noisy and noisy, which will bring great trouble to the normal teaching management of the school.
But don't forget, Fu Si Nian has a nickname, called "Fu Cannon", and any privileged person who wants to put pressure on him will not work.
Before the summer of 1949, Fu Si Nian published an article in the school magazine announcing a strict admissions examination system, emphasizing that new students were admitted absolutely according to the test results, giving everyone a chance to compete on an equal footing. From propositions, proctoring to examination papers, Fu Si Nian set a precedent for the strict examination of NTU, and this system has been used to this day. On the occasion of admissions, Fu Sinian wrote a line of large characters next to the door of the principal's office, "Those who have said things for the enrollment of their children, please do not open their mouths."
In order to maintain the academic status of NTU and put the employment system such as hiring teachers on the right track, Fu Si Nian also formulated a set of appointment and promotion standards. In the employment of people, Fu Si Nian does not rely on people's prestige and merit, but on academic achievements, especially his future achievements. Fu Si Nian also told the teachers: "I may come to your classroom with the provost, with the provost, with the dean of your college, and the head of your department to observe, please don't be surprised." As a result, Fu Si Nian really ran to the audit, and in the first year of winter vacation, he "listened" to several teachers.
Fu Sinian believes that no matter what kind of university, in order to run in line with ideals, it is first necessary to cultivate a research and academic atmosphere. Therefore, Fu Sinian attaches great importance to grade assessment, rewards are given for good grades, and those who are not good are punished; usually homework is stepped up, especially the homework of the first year, which will make people have a tendency to be overwhelmed. In addition, various competitions and essays are carried out in turn, and students must be conscientious and work hard to be with books day and night, and from morning to evening, the library must be full of students.
He asked famous teachers to give basic classes to freshmen, starting from the academic foothold, and conducting initial academic training for students, so that students can get academic influence from the beginning.
At National Taiwan University, Fu Sinian truly implemented the true meaning of democracy, and as long as the students' opinions were reasonable, there was nothing that they did not adopt. For the questions raised by students, Fu Si Nian will also write an open letter to reply.
Fu Si Nian has the majesty of a headmaster, but does not have the headmaster's shelf. In the minds of the students, "Principal Fu is not only the strict father of the NTU students, but also the loving mother of the NTU students." ”
In 1950, two students from National Taiwan University and Normal College rode a bicycle and were beaten and detained by the police in disobedience. The incident intensified, eventually triggering a wave of learning. On April 6, Chen Cheng, then head of Taiwan's administrative department, ordered the dispatch of military police to suppress and enter the campus for arrest. For a time, a solemn atmosphere enveloped the campus of National Taiwan University. Fu Si Nian was highly dissatisfied with the authorities' forced entry into the campus of National Taiwan University without legal procedures to arrest teachers and students. He personally negotiated with the highest authorities of the Kuomintang, demanding that the arrest of Taiwan's masters and students must be approved by the principal. He even approached Peng Mengji, then deputy head of Taiwan's police department, and almost pressed his body against the barrel of the gun.
Fu Sinian slowly propped up the University, but he should not continue to work.
On December 20, 1950, Fu Si Nian first attended a meeting to discuss the improvement of agricultural education and the guarantee of sending Taiwan university students to study abroad. After a short break from lunch, he rushed to the provincial assembly hall to attend the fifth meeting of the Taiwan Provincial Senate. At about 5:40 p.m., Senator Guo Guoji, known as "Guo Cannon," suddenly jumped up and questioned NTU. Guo Guoji asked the government sharply and aggressively, first questioning how to handle the equipment transported by the mainland to Taiwan and stored in Taiwan University; then asking the question of relaxing the enrollment scale of National Taiwan University.
Fu Sinian insisted that the scholarship system should not be abolished, and for those students with good qualifications and willingness to work hard, he was very sympathetic to the young people who could not go to school because they did not have money, and could not let them be excluded from the school. After speaking, it was already 6:10 p.m., and Fu Si Nian stepped off the podium, and just as he returned to his seat, his face suddenly turned pale and he fainted. The Affiliated Hospital of National Taiwan University immediately sent people to give emergency treatment, and it was determined that it was a cerebral hemorrhage after diagnosis. Chiang Kai-shek heard the news and ordered Chen Cheng to mobilize all the famous doctors in Taiwan to save Fu Sinian, but he still lacked the skills to return to heaven. At 9:30 p.m., Fossian passed away at the age of 55.
The next day, Li Wanju, vice speaker of the Taiwan Provincial Assembly, held a press conference, and because mandarin was not spoken in standards, a reporter heard "abandoning the world" as "angry death." So the news came out that Fu Sinian was killed alive by Guo Guoji.
At 11 o'clock the next day, more than 200 students, holding the slogan "Painfully Lost a Good Teacher," lined up at the door of the provincial senate and asked Guo Guoji to come out and explain the situation. The students did not return to school until the parliamentarians came out to reply to the instructions.
It is not so much that Fu Sinian was killed by anger, but rather that Fu Sinian was overworked and died of exhaustion, which is really a sigh. In addition to the school affairs, in order not to let his wife feel sorry for himself, Fu Sinian used "making cotton pants for himself" as an excuse to make money to supplement his family; in order to let the poor students accept his gifts safely, he also lied to the good faith and called his savings as the manuscript fee that he did not know how to use. At the end of his life, Fu Si Nian was still thinking about his relatives and students.
After Fu Si Nian's death, in order to commemorate his achievements in creating a new atmosphere of the National Taiwan University generation, in accordance with the precedent of the University of Virginia in the United States to build a mausoleum for President Jefferson on campus, the herbarium of tropical plants next to the main entrance of National Taiwan University set aside a piece of land to build a Greek-style memorial pavilion, and a rectangular tomb was built with marble in the garden. In front of the tomb, there is a wordless obelisk and a fountain to form a unique landscape.
Next to the Coconut Grove Avenue of National Taiwan University, there is also a "Fu Bell", which is the spiritual symbol of National Taiwan University.
Fu Bell rings 21 times at a time, because Fu Si Nian famously said, "There are only 21 hours in a day, and the other three hours are used for contemplation."
