Hu Butterfly
Some people describe her beauty, the atmosphere is dignified, simple and natural, but it contains a kind of grace and luxury. The dimples on her left cheek are feminine and gentle, and she is very moving.
In the year of Hu Die's birth, Guangxu and Cixi died one after another, and three years later, the Republic of China was established. The mother later said that her daughter's date of birth, but could not remember 1908, so she said: This lady was born in the year when Lafayette and the emperor died.
Hu Die's birthplace was in Shanghai, and when he was 3 years old, his father Hu Shaogong served as the chief inspector of the Beijing-Feng railway, and later his job changed, and he went south to Guangdong to engage in salt work. At an early age, Hu Die moved with her parents to Tianjin, Beijing, Guangzhou and other places. In the rush of travel, she learned Beiping dialect, Cantonese, and Shanghainese.
In 1924, the family returned to Shanghai from Guangzhou. This year, 16-year-old Hu Di happened to see an advertisement for admissions to the China Film School, which was the first film actor training school in China founded by Zeng Huantang. Hu Di did not tell her parents, and took the exam on her own initiative and was successfully admitted. This year's students include Hu Die, Xu Qinfang, Tang Jie, Xiao Ying, Zhu Fei, Lin Xuehuai, Tang Bihua and so on.
Parents have no objection to their daughters being admitted to film school. Only to tell her to seriously learn drama and be a down-to-earth person.
In film school, Hu Die and Xu Qinfang are the same age and have the best emotions. The school offers more than ten courses such as Introduction to Film and Drama, History of Modern Western Drama, and Acting, Makeup, Dance, and Singing. Hu Di and Xu Qinfang agreed to cherish the time and strive to learn more new skills in preparation for future performances. I just learned to ride a horse, and then I learned to drive. The two called a taxi, drove to the outskirts, paid the driver double the fare, and asked the driver to point out the driving technique. The driver can not only take more fares, but also show his skills in front of beautiful girls, naturally very willing, enthusiastic, tireless. The two apprentices also worked hard, enjoyed it, and quickly learned to drive.
In 1925, Hu Die graduated and entered the Youlian Film Company, starring in her first film " Autumn Fan Complaint " . In the play, Hu Die plays the cousin Shen Liqiong, Lin Xuehuai plays the cousin Wu Yi, the two have a love affair because of the drama, because of love, and soon signed a marriage contract.
In 1926, Hu Die joined the Tianyi Film Company and successively filmed films such as "The History of Liang Zhu's Pain" and "Pearl Tower". In 1928, he switched to a star company, co-starred with Ruan Lingyu in "White Cloud Pagoda", and participated in the performance of "Burning Red Lotus Temple". The star company soon discovered Butterfly's acting talent and began to focus on cultivating her.
In the past few years, the role played by Hu Die has become more and more accepted by the audience, and the road of acting has become smoother and smoother, and the fame has become more and more famous. On the other hand, Lin Xuehuai, in the acting world, is wandering, and it is difficult to improve. Whenever the two go in and out of public together, Lin Xuehuai is always introduced as Hu Die's boyfriend, which makes him a bit like a small white face eating soft rice, and his heart always feels that it is not a taste, and there is a kind of unspeakable embarrassment and awkwardness.
Lin Xuehuai decided to give up his career as an actor and devote himself to the business sea and do a career that raised his eyebrows. Hu Die was very supportive of this, and took out her savings to help him start a department store. But Lin Xuehuai is not a business talent, and soon the business was frustrated, and he saw a different idea, taking Hu Die's money to open a restaurant and run a photo studio, and the result was still a series of failures. He simply broke the jar and broke it, and ran to the brothel with the prostitutes on his back.
No matter how kind and virtuous Hu Die is, she finally can't tolerate it. At the end of 1931, the "Butterfly Snow Termination Case" was finally resolved, and Hu and Lin completely ended their relationship.
Without the entanglement of Hu Die, he devoted himself to the art of film and gave full play to his acting talent. In 1932, she starred in "Laughter Karma", and then participated in the film "Wild Currents", starring in the films "Flower of Freedom" and "Sister Flower". In 1933, Shanghai's Star Daily launched an election campaign for a film queen, and Hu Die was elected "movie queen" with 21,334 votes. The "Sister Flower" she starred in also broke the record for the highest attendance rate ever recorded by domestic films.
In this election campaign, Ruan Lingyu only received more than 7,000 votes, ranking third, but she was called the uncrowned king. For Ruan Lingyu's acting skills, Butterfly is also highly respected, she once said frankly: "On the acting skills, I am not as good as A Nguyen, she can play the role I have played, I can't play the role she has played." "The two superstars are not sword-fighting because they are in a competitive relationship, and the open mind of the winner makes people see a virtue that is more worthy of respect than a beauty pageant."
In 1935, the Soviet Union held the Moscow Film Festival, and a delegation of 7 Chinese films went to Moscow to participate in the film festival, and then was invited to visit Berlin, Paris, London, Rome and other places. Hu Die was the only actor representative in the delegation and the first Chinese film star to visit abroad. The delegation brought 8 participating films, of which "Sister Flower" and "Empty Gulan" were starring Hu Die. At that time, the international film industry knew almost nothing about Chinese films, and through exchanges, they understood the level of Chinese films, and from Hu Die, they knew China's first-class actors and expressed their appreciation for her acting skills.
This year, after four years of love run, Hu Die and Pan Yousheng held a grand wedding at the Holy Trinity Church on Jiujiang Road in Shanghai, and the lovers eventually became dependents. When the two met, Pan Yousheng was still a small clerk in the tea department of Lihe and Foreign Firm, and the identity of Hu Die was very different, but after several contacts, Hu Die felt that Pan Yousheng was particularly realistic, delicate and considerate, elegant in temperament, and personable. Although she has no money and no power, she has the virtues of the man she wants. Hu Also found that he knew all about the goods he operated. Brew him a cup of tea, he takes a sip, and he can accurately say the origin and grade of tea.
In view of the lessons of the past, Hu Die and Pan Yousheng only talk about love, whether they are married or even do not appear in public. In this regard, Pan Yousheng has no complaints and is willing to silently guard behind his back. This wait is 4 years, Pan Yousheng was promoted from a small staff to a general manager, and Hu Die also won the reputation of a movie queen.
After marriage, Hu Di became a standard housewife, only taking one or two movies a year, and spending most of her time with her family. Less than two years after such a good day, with the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the fall of Shanghai, the main factory of the star company in Fenglinqiao, Shanghai, was occupied by the Japanese army, and Hu Die had to take her family to live in Hong Kong. A few years later, Hong Kong also fell, and the Japanese, for propaganda purposes, found Hu Die, invited her to Tokyo with heavy money, and wanted to borrow her star effect to shoot a documentary "Hu Die's Tour to Tokyo" in order to achieve the purpose of promoting the so-called "Sino-Japanese goodwill".
Hu Di refused the invitation on the pretext of being pregnant. But this was by no means a long-term solution, and in order to avoid further harassment by the Japanese, Hu Di and Pan Yousheng decided to flee Hong Kong immediately and take refuge in Chongqing, the capital of Chongqing. In order to avoid people's eyes and ears, the husband and wife packed the family into more than 30 suitcases and entrusted them to transport them out of Hong Kong in batches.
The two took only a small amount of luggage, and after a journey, they came to Chongqing to live in the home of Hu Die's classmate Lin Zhiming. Pan Yousheng co-founded a company with friends and engaged in the tea and timber business, while Hu Die participated in the filming of the anti-Japanese film "The Road to the Founding of the Country".
The two did not expect that the more than thirty boxes of valuable luggage they entrusted to their friend Yang Huimin would be robbed by bandits in the middle of the road, which was Hu Die's accumulated possessions for many years, and once lost, it would be like ruining the family.
Lin Zhiming's husband, Yang Hu, was a former commander of the Shanghai Garrison, and Hu Di hoped that he would help him retrieve the looted property. Yang Hu told Dai Kasa of the Military Command Bureau about this, and Dai Kasa asked Hu Die to draw up a list of properties and guaranteed to recover it within a month.
Dai Kasa was indeed very powerful, and it didn't take much time to find out that the bandit who had robbed Hu Die's luggage was Wang Hu, the great thief of the Dongjiang River who ran rampant in Guangdong. Dai Kasa immediately sent someone to arrest the bandits and recover some of their belongings, but some of them had already been sold and their whereabouts were unknown. Soon Dai Kasa informed Hu Die to collect his luggage, and Hu Die opened the box and looked at it, and everything was there. But carefully identified, it was found that some things were better and more valuable than the original style. Hu Di immediately understood that this was something that Dai Kasa had bought with his own money to make up for it. Hu Di was inconvenient to break, but she was very grateful in her heart.
Soon, Pan Yousheng was accused of hiding guns and was arrested by the police. Hu Di understood that someone had planted a bribe to frame him, and had no choice but to ask Dai Kasa for help again. Dai Kasa found someone to get a permit for the Burma Highway and a letter of appointment for commissioner, and arranged for Pan Yousheng to serve as the customs commissioner of the Guangdong District Freight Department of the Ministry of Finance. With this position, you can go to Yunnan and Myanmar to engage in export trade and make a profitable business.
Pan Yousheng was murdered and sent out of prison, terrified, and immediately left Chongqing with his luggage and set off for Yunnan. As soon as Pan Yousheng left on the front foot, Dai Kasa came to Lin Zhiming's house on the back foot and warmly invited Hu Die to move to his Zengjiayan Villa. Hu Di already understood Dai Kasa's intentions, and in order to save her husband's life, she had no choice but to move into the Dai Mansion under the persuasion of Lin Zhiming.
After Pan Yousheng arrived in Yunnan, because he was worried about his wife, he returned to Chongqing from Kunming halfway and learned that Hu Die had already moved into the Dai Mansion. He went to Zengjiayan to see Hu Die, but was turned away. He ran to the Military Command Bureau to see Dai Kasa, but no one paid any attention to him. One day, Dai Kasa's secretary found Pan Yousheng and took out a wad of money and said to him, there are two roads in front of you, one is to insist on taking Ms. Hu, she and you are in danger. The other way is to take the money back to Kunming, and they are good to each other. Pan yousheng thought about it again and again, took the money and left with tears in his eyes.
Dai Kasa Kanaya hid Jiao, until March 17, 1946, due to the accidental death of a plane crash, Hu Die and Pan Yousheng broke the mirror and reunited. The two reunited after the disaster, hugging each other and crying. He then moved to Hong Kong. In 1946, Hu Di filmed films such as "A Certain Lady" and "Splendid Paradise" for the Hong Kong GreatEr China Company. Pan Yousheng also has his own business in Hong Kong, and the two adopted sons and daughters are also very obedient, and everything is happy and happy, peaceful and quiet. I thought that there would be no more hardships in life, but I did not expect that in 1952, Pan Yousheng was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer, and he died a few months later.
Grief-stricken Hu Die, in order to express her deep nostalgia for her deceased husband, changed her name to Pan Baojuan from then on, lived in isolation, and stopped filming. It was not until 1959, under the persuasion of friends, that he returned to the film industry and returned to his old business. At the request of Shaw's company, she has filmed films such as "Street Boy", "Two Generations of Women", "Back door" and so on. Among them, the film "Back door" won the Best Film Jinhe Award at the 7th Asian Film Festival held in Japan in 1960, and Hu Die won the Best Actress Award for the role of Mrs. Xu in the film. In the same year, the film won the Best Film Award presented by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the 52-year-old Hu Die also rose to the throne of "Asian Film Queen".

In 1966, Hu Die officially withdrew from the film industry. In 1975, she moved to Vancouver, Canada.
Fourteen years later, in April 1989, at the age of 81, Hu Die died in Vancouver, Canada. The hustle and bustle of the world, at this time, all go with the wind and return to tranquility. The last words she left before leaving were: Butterflies are going to fly away.
This Hu Die, who flew away, left more than 200,000 words of "Memoirs of Hu Die", which became a witness to the history of Chinese cinema.
Spanning the era of Chinese silent films and the era of sound, Hu Die is a participant and witness in the history of Chinese cinema.
She is a legend in the history of Chinese cinema, like a colorful butterfly, which has magically flown in the film industry for more than forty years, leaving more than a hundred films for future generations, strung together into a glory that will never disappear.
