In 1931, Wen Yuan was born in Shanghai into a family of scholars, his father was Yao Pengzi.

Yao Pengzi is a native of Zhuji, Zhejiang, whose real name is Yao Mengsheng, and "Pengzi" is his pen name. Yao Pengzi's father, Yao Hanzhang, was a late Qing dynasty official who worked as an editor at the Zhonghua Bookstore in Shanghai.
