Wang Xiaoying of Ant Group: Starting from the advocacy of public awareness, we should build a bridge for the linkage of green development between the consumer side and the industrial side

On November 3, 21st Century Business Herald held the "Carbon Neutrality Theme Forum: Green Transformation and Development under the 'Double Carbon' Goal", inviting experts, scholars, enterprise representatives, financial institutions, etc. to gather together to discuss how to promote win-win economic development and environmental protection, how enterprises can carry out green transformation and development, and how finance can help achieve the "double carbon" goal.

When participating in the roundtable session of the carbon neutrality theme forum, Wang Xiaoying, director of the Green Development Office of Ant Group, introduced that after the "double carbon" goal was announced, from the perspective of corporate social responsibility, Ant Group carried out an inventory of corporate carbon emissions at the first time and set a carbon neutrality goal.

"Although many enterprises, including Ant Group, have not been included in the list of controlled enterprises, we are very pleased to see that the Internet technology industry, including Ant, is actively participating in carbon neutrality and has also carried out a lot of work." Wang Xiaoying said.

As the first company in the Internet industry to announce carbon neutrality targets, Ant Group pledged on March 12 to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. In April, Ant Group announced specific implementation paths, including neutralizing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in 2021 and net zero emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) in 2030.

According to Wang Xiaoying, after announcing the carbon neutrality target, Ant Group is also exploring how technology can better support green development.

During this year's Double 11 period, Ant Group applied "green computing" for the first time on a large scale, and adopted three resource scheduling technologies to achieve computing power sharing to reduce the carbon emissions of data centers. This is another exploration of technology to help green development since Ant Group announced its carbon neutrality plan. Previously, in September, Ant Group launched the Ant Chain "Carbon Matrix" platform to help enterprises manage the whole process of carbon neutrality through blockchain technology.

Wang Xiaoying said that there are three key words in Ant Group's strategy: inclusive, green and sustainable. At the same time, Ant Group has been trying to decompose keywords such as "green" from the strategic level to the business level. "In the second half of last year, while launching the planning of the carbon neutral path, we were also optimizing and upgrading the organizational structure, and established the Ant Group Green Development Office to coordinate the green development of various businesses within the company."

According to reports, Ant Group's green development framework is divided into five directions, namely green responsibility, green life, green finance, green technology and green investment and financing. Taking green life as an example, "Ant Forest has built a low-carbon life incentive system in the past five years, that is, using green energy to encourage the public to live a low-carbon life, planting trees in the form of real donations, setting up public welfare protection sites to implement it (the results of the public low-carbon action to reduce emissions), and 600 million people have participated." More importantly, we found that these low-carbon behaviors subtly changed the way users live their daily lives. As a result, five dimensions of low-carbon actions have been constructed: green travel, reduced travel, reduced electricity emissions, high efficiency and energy saving, and recycling, in order to play the role of the Internet platform. Wang Xiaoying said.

Ant Forest's "public welfare incentive model" has also been recognized by the business community. On August 25 this year, the day of "National Low Carbon Day", Ant Forest officially opened the "Green Energy Action", and more than 100 enterprises such as Haier, FAW-Volkswagen, and Ele.me participated in it, jointly using "green energy" as a reward to promote consumers to choose more energy-saving, low-carbon and emission-reducing products and services. This year's double 11 Tmall for the first time set up a "green home appliances" venue, Haier, Midea, Hisense and other more than 30 home appliance brands participated, with "green energy" as an incentive means to encourage consumers to choose more green products, only 9 hours after opening, more than 120,000 "green home appliances" in line with national energy efficiency were bought by consumers. Green energy drives the consumption of home appliances to be more environmentally friendly and energy-saving, and has also become a new driving force for low-carbon life.

In terms of green finance and green investment and financing, Ant Group's related businesses are exploring different development directions. For example, in 2018, the MYbank initiated by Ant Group began to explore the financial services of the green evaluation system for small and micro enterprises, and gave some credit preferences to small and micro enterprises with high evaluations. On the Alipay wealth management platform, an evaluation system is constructed for the ESG performance of the settled funds, and a green fund area is set up and continuously optimized, forming the advocacy and attitude of the platform.

At the same time, at the investment level, Ant Group is still actively laying out and paying attention, such as participating in Haro Bicycle, Tianjin Emission Rights Exchange, etc. "The layout of such industries is to build a complete set of systems, better exert the power of ecology, gradually implement green from the strategic level to the implementation of the business level, and through the establishment of the corresponding organizational structure, promote green in the company to slowly occur, serving more partners and society."

Low-carbon life to a certain extent reverse the promotion of industry innovation. "For example, the use of charging piles in this low-carbon scenario, charging an hour can obtain 32 grams of energy, which can form a kind of advocacy education, behind which combined with the industry link, you can build a bridge for the green development of the industry from the consumer side."
