The Federal Fisheries Commission has recently issued Resolution 13 on the maximum catch allowed for several species, namely hake hubbsi, Australian cod, silver cod and okiky fish (longtail cod). Although slight signs of recovery have been observed in some cases, in general, there are signs of decline in populations, particularly in fish and juveniles of childbearing age. It should be noted that biologists warn of the need to comply with the management measures recommended for these species, including reducing juvenile fishing.
With regard to the hake hubbsi species, a report on the status of the northern population was submitted, which marked a recovery in population numbers in recent years, but it is worth noting that it is still below the biological reference limit. According to Act No. 37, in order to achieve the goal of restoring reproductive biomass, the catch in 2020 should not exceed 42 000 tons. It does not report by the proposed recovery plan IDEAL depending on the likelihood of achieving the objectives.
For southern populations, the researchers did not report it, even those with the highest risk. Although the proportions are not explicitly stated, only an increase in larger samples is indicated. In addition, based on the results of the assessment, consideration is given to setting the catch in 2020 at 290,000 tonnes, a figure similar to the previous year.
The results of the survey report from the Australian cod show that its population has shown a downward trend for most of the time, with a slight recovery in recent years, with an increase in juvenile populations due to more favourable fishing activities and reduced fishing in the reproductive area.
Based on Council members, based on future projections of the state of the resources and risk analysis of meeting different management objectives, the available catch is estimated to be between 18 800 and 23 000 tonnes. The maximum catch in 2020 is therefore set at 23,000 tonnes.
With regard to the good luck fish (long-tailed cod), it was noted that the evolutionary trend in biomass was variable until 2003, but in recent years, with the exception of the year 2017. In estimating different capture scenarios and associated risks, the probability of capture between 60,000 and 181,000 tonnes in 2020 is prescribed. The Council decided to set a maximum catch of 80 000 tonnes.
In the case of the Patagonian canine toothfish (silver cod), the enclosed area for protected fishing has previously been expanded and, despite the current regulations, it has been reported that the biomass level that meets or exceeds the set target value has not been reached. Based on the biological reference limits of the catch and the catch of 5 485 tonnes and 3691 tonnes, respectively, the Commission decided to set the catch at 3 700 tonnes by 2020.
