When we talk about the ultimate purpose of philosophy of life, we always hope to understand the meaning of our own life.

What is meaning?

The two words "meaning" are the possibility of understanding.

Can you understand what life is all about?

You live this life now, can you have an explanation?

If you say a truth, it means that you understand life, and life has meaning.

What does faith bring to a person?

Faith can help people understand the meaning of life and understand the three mysteries.

The meaning of life is related to three mysteries, and the biggest problem of human life in the world is three:

Pain, sin and death.

Only by fully thinking about and understanding these three points can life be suddenly enlightened.

1 How to face the pain of life?

First, about pain.

Why do people live in the world, why do they have bitterness and pleasure?

And often feel that happiness is very short-lived, in order to get pleasure, often have to pay a lot of painful price.

Can faith make you face pain?

Yes, true religious beliefs have a certain stance on suffering.

Some religions choose to face suffering directly and bear its tests, such as Christianity.

Jesus said, "Carry the cross and follow me."

Living in the world, everyone is carrying their own cross, and this cross is of course a metaphor, because the back of the cross will eventually reach the mountain and be crucified.

This life of man is finally coming to an end, and this life is on the road of a painful test.

Think of pain as a test.

For example, physical illness and aging; emotional separation from life and death, or various misunderstandings, all kinds of troubles;

Spiritual emptiness, despair, these all belong to the category of suffering.

What to do when faced with pain?

No curse, no escape, just face it;

Think of it as an important process of washing yourself and refining your own spiritual level.

2 Suffering stems from two attachments

The other way is to be aware of suffering, to understand where the root cause of all this is, and to dissolve it, to speak of Buddhist thought.

Buddhism wants people to be able to realize that all beings are suffering, because the essence of life is to sacrifice other lives and complete their own lives.

We have to consume a lot of food every day, and we have to eat these plants and animals to maintain our own life. To sustain human life is to consume other lives.

Well, perhaps our lives are also slowly being consumed at the hands of larger people.

In this way, the essence of enlightened life may be a suffering.

The greatest sources of suffering are two:

One is attachment to the self;

The other is attachment to this tangible, visible, and changeable world.

Buddhism teaches people to dissolve these two attachments, to realize that everything is empty, that there is no real self-existence, that there is no real world existence, that all existence is dependent arising.

Dependent arising is the phenomenon manifested by the ripening of various karmic conditions;

It is a process of change, and everything is essentially empty, which is dependent voidness.

So why be too persistent?

In the face of suffering, you can have such an awareness, suffering is not a problem, and you don't have to feel too sad;

When there is pain, it is important to bear it seriously and allow yourself to grow in the process of bearing.

Second, there is the issue of sin.

What is sin?

We often find out in the world, why is the human world so complicated and troublesome?

Murder, arson, deception, all kinds of things that hurt nature and reason.

Why would anyone do this?

There are so many man-made disasters in China's history, you can't believe it when you go to understand them.

Since the Han Dynasty, there have been great famines every once in a while, followed by the cannibalism of people, and almost every dynasty will appear at the end of the day, which is really miserable.

During the Han Dynasty, the population of the Central Plains was nearly 60 million, and after nearly 1,000 years of development, by the end of the Ming Dynasty, the world was in chaos, and after several wars, the population of the Central Plains was almost 60 million at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty.

What is this like?

You can imagine how many people have died in the war.

I once heard a historian mention that "the past thirty years have been the best situation in China's history that there have been no various internal and external wars."

It occurred to me that there were indeed too many wars in history.

Its origin is all kinds of evil things, and all kinds of evil in the process are even more intense;

Could it be better after the end? Not sure.

And what can faith bring to people?

Faith is uncompromising on sin and seeks to pursue human justice in it.

Think about it, if there is no faith, sometimes people really can't stand it.

The great evil blows over, like a hurricane sweeping everything away, what is left of the man?

Having faith, one must preserve one's conscience, the last bit of light, waiting for the dawn to reappear after darkness.

Third, about death.

The hardest thing to understand, of course, is death.

What is death?

Death is a passage, death is not the end, not simply saying that there is nothing when you are dead, that is a kind of nihilism.

Through the passage of death, there will be a different kind of life.

How is it different?

The beliefs of various religions are further explained.

I will cite only two philosophers as examples.

The first is Socrates.

Socrates was falsely accused, tried, and finally sentenced to death.

He said publicly that there were only two circumstances of death.

The first is that my life is completely gone, as if I were entering a dreamless sleep.

Ordinary people usually sleep without dreaming will feel very happy, so death is not to never dream again? Everything was gone.

If so, what's there to care about?

He also reminded the five hundred judges who tried him, "I have been caught up by death, but you have been caught up by evil, and it is not certain who among us is luckier and who is more in line with the requirements of the gods."

He certainly had his self-confidence that death was just a conduit.

Second, Socrates said, death is like my body no longer bound to me, only my spirit, or soul.

What is the soul yearning for?

After death, go and be with people close to you.

Socrates spent his life searching for the truth, and after his death he was with many ancient sages who were also searching for the truth.

5 Faith, Hope, and Love

The second is Confucius.

Confucius believed that death was the end of natural life on the one hand, which was inevitable, because there was birth and death, and it was the inevitable fate of any living thing.

But on the other hand, Confucius said that "death is the completion of a valuable life."

Why is Confucianism valuable?

It is precisely because he emphasizes that when people are sincere, they will find that there is a force for good in their hearts, which is called "human nature toward good", and in this life, they must try to "choose good and be stubborn", and the final purpose is to "stop at the best good".

Whether or not this life can complete the life of value is whether this life can be worthy of oneself, the requirements of human nature as a person.

Looking at death this way, what is there to worry about death?

So what can faith bring to a person?

To sum up, there are three points:

First, always have confidence. What is precious in human life is not the body and mind, but the spiritual level.

Second, live in hope.

Just as Dante wrote about hell in the Divine Comedy, he said, "Let go of hope when he enters the gates of hell," we live with faith and always have hope.

Third, be loving to people.

Some religions talk about fraternity, some talk about compassion, basically because after enlightenment, from the perspective of transcendence, everything in the world will be found, at this time, people are actually brothers and sisters, there is a common great source of life.

In this way, when I interact with others, I should cherish every opportunity and get along well.
