The fifth year of Jian'an (200 AD) was a pivotal year in the history of the Three Kingdoms, with many major events, including Cao Cao's defeat of Liu Bei's occupation of Xuzhou, Cao Cao's battle of Guandu with Yuan Shao, and Liu Bei's defection to Yuan Shao and then his departure for Runan.
These major events are the main threads of the history of the Three Kingdoms, but under this main line there is a strange dark line hidden. That was Zhang Fei's strange whereabouts.
In February of the fifth year of Jian'an, due to the exposure of the Yidaizhao incident, Cao Cao led an army to attack Liu Bei, "... Sui Dong attacked and broke it, and gave birth to its general Xiahou Bo. Ready to go to Benshao, get his wife. Prepare the general Guan Yu tun down Pi, resume the attack, and yu descend. ”
After Liu Bei's defeat, he defected to Yuan Shao alone, first arriving in Qingzhou and being solemnly greeted by Yuan Shao's eldest son, Yuan Tan. Qingzhou was in the northeast direction of Xuzhou, and after Liu Bei went north, many of the old departments followed, "stationed in the rest of the month, the lost soldiers and soldiers came to collect a little" ("Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Biography of the Ancestors").
However, while many of his subordinates went north to follow Liu Bei, Liu Bei's closest person, Zhang Fei, ran in the opposite direction and ran in the southwest direction... The famous play "Ancient City Society" in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms tells this plot, Zhang Fei and Liu Bei are separated, and run to Runan, in the opposite direction, with a small number of soldiers and horses. Historically, Zhang Fei did exactly that.
"In the fifth year of Jian'an, Shi (Xiahou) Bacong's thirteenth and fourth years, in this county, traveled to collect trees, which was obtained by Zhang Fei. Fei knew that she was the daughter of a good family, so she thought that she was a wife, and she was the daughter of Liu Chan. Yu County is located in the southwest of Xuzhou, just between Xuzhou and Runan. In this way, a hidden history of the "Ancient City Society" surfaced: at the critical juncture of xuzhou's defeat, Zhang Fei left the lord Liu Bei alone and ran to Cao Cao's hometown of Yu County (Both the Cao clan and the Xiahou clan were from Yu County) to abduct an underage girl.
Therefore, the famous traditional drama "Ancient City Society" will be very interesting if it is related to this real history. Zhang Fei sat at the head of the ancient city of Cheng, loudly accusing Guan Yu of surrendering to Cao Cao, and then asking Guan Yu to behead Cai Yang in the three-way drum. Guan Yu couldn't imagine that behind Zhang Fei was a yellow flower girl peeking, and it was also the family of Cao Cao and Xiahou Yuan.
Historically, why did Zhang Fei run in the opposite direction of Liu Bei?

In the fifth year of Jian'an (200 AD), two very coincidental events occurred.
In February of that year, Cao Cao attacked Liu Bei in Xuzhou, "breaking it, giving birth to its general Xiahou Bo", and then captured Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei was also separated from Liu Bei. However, in the same year, zhang fei kidnapped Xiahou Yuan's niece again.
Xiahou Bo was captured (most likely subsequently died of his wounds or indomitable), and Zhang Fei abducted Xiahou Yuan's niece, both of which happened almost on the front and back feet. Not only that, but there are many strange places in the process of hijacking, which are incredible to future generations.
"Shi (Xiahou) Ba, in the thirteenth and fourth year of his sister's year, traveled in this county to collect trees, which was obtained by Zhang Fei." The short transcript of Wei Liu contains a large amount of historical information.
First, in the five years of Jian'an, Xiahou Yuan was already a big figure of the level of "Chen Liu and Yingchuan Taishou" ("Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Biography of Xiahou Cao"), and the Cao clan and the Xiahou clan were both local Hao clans, and their relatives actually had to "travel to the trees", which was unbelievably absurd.
Second, Zhang Fei boldly went deep into Cao Cao's hometown base camp, and captured one of Xiahou Yuan's most important relatives (Xiahou Yuan had "abandoned his young son" for this niece), and the abduction target was very clear, as if he were looking for someone.
Third, after the incident, the Xiahou family almost did not react at all, and even completely concealed the incident. It was not until forty-nine years later (249 AD) that Xiahou Yuan's son Xiahou Ba fled to Shu Han that Liu Chan uncovered this dusty secret. Xiahou Bo, who may have followed Liu Bei for a long time, became Liu Bei's close general and had a deep friendship with Zhang Fei. When Cao Cao launched a major attack on Xuzhou in the fifth year of Jian'an, Liu Bei led the main force to meet the battle, Xiahou Bo and Zhang Fei were the main generals in the army, and Guan Yu remained in Xuzhou.
After Liu Bei's defeat, Xiahou Bo was unfortunately captured, and since there was no news since then, it was likely that he would die of his wounds or be killed unyieldingly. Before Xiahou Bo died, it was likely that he had confessed something to Zhang Fei, so Zhang Fei did not even follow Liu Bei north, but ran in the opposite direction of Liu Bei and ran straight to Cao Cao's hometown to pick up Xiahou Bo's daughter.
Xiahou Bo's daughter's so-called "traveling trees and being taken captive" is actually just an excuse for outsiders to see, or it is simply a random speculation by outsiders. In fact, Zhang Fei's pick-up of Xiahou Bo's daughter was communicated between the two sides in advance, and it was very likely that he had the support and assistance of Xiahou Yuan! Otherwise, the Xiahou family Qianjin ran to the outskirts alone, and was caught by the most dangerous elements of the enemy camp, which was obviously deliberately arranged by the Xiahou family itself.
