According to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guan Yu's first meeting with Zhang Liao should be in Xuzhou. Lü Bu and Cao Cao fought in Yanzhou for several months, and finally lost their troops and surrendered to Liu Bei, Liu Bei not only did not reject Lü Bu, but welcomed them very much, and placed them in Xiao Pei. Zhang Liao, as Lü Bu's general, should have met Guan Yu, but at that time, the two were each their master, and they were not familiar with each other, and even if there was, there would not be too much intersection.
However, heroes have their own heroic spirit, and only heroes can recognize this spirit. There were two fierce generals under Lü Bu's tent, one was Gao Shun and the other was Zhang Liao. Although Gao Shun was loyal to Lü Bu and unswerving, Zhang Liao was not, why? A soldier dies for a confidant, but is Lü Bu a man who knows others?
Lü Bu, a loyal person like Gao Shun, is difficult to reuse, let alone Zhang Liao? When Zhang Liao was under Lü Bu's account, it was difficult to give full play to his ability, and Lü Bu killed his righteous father and was capricious, defecting to Liu Bei and taking his Xuzhou, which made Zhang Liao even more disdainful. Therefore, when Lü Bu asked Zhang Liao to attack Liu Bei, Zhang Liao did not carry out the full implementation.
Under Xiao Peicheng, Zhang Liao attacked the West Gate, and it was Guan Yu who guarded the West Gate, and in such a scene, the two had a cordial conversation. Guan Yu asked Zhang Liao, "The public appearance is not vulgar, why did you lose yourself to a thief?" Zhang Liao bowed his head and said nothing, leading his troops to the East Gate. Guarding the east gate was Zhang Fei, Guan Yu hurried to the east gate, Zhang Fei was about to fight, zhang Liao led the troops to retreat. Zhang Fei wanted to chase after him, but Guan Yu stopped him and said, "This person's martial arts are not under you and me." Because I feel righteous and have a lot of remorse, I will not wait with me. ”
Zhang Liao's only retreat left a deep impression on Guan Yu and left a way back for himself. Soon Lü Bu was defeated by Cao Cao, Lü Bu, Chen Gong, Gao Shun and others all died, and Zhang Liao was also unable to escape death, but some people knelt down in front of Cao Cao and dared to use their lives to vouch for it and save him. Who? It was Guan Yu!
After Guan Yu protected Zhang Liao, the relationship between the two heated up sharply, and they spent a relatively peaceful time in Xudu, but then the Yidaizhao incident occurred. Guan Yu returned to Xuzhou with Liu Bei again, beheading Cao Cao's henchman Che, Cao Cao blitzed Xuzhou, Liu Bei fled, and Guan Yu was besieged on Tushan. Zhang Liao remembered his old feelings and surrendered Guan Yu.
Zhang Liao's careful preparations for the demotion of Guan Yu can be said to be meticulous, and the saying of "three sins and three conveniences" is everywhere for the sake of Guan Yu, and Guan Yu cannot help but think about it carelessly. Guan Yu therefore proposed the "Three Covenants", the most crucial of which was "but knowing Where Liu Bei is going, no matter how far he goes, he should resign", and Cao Cao was deeply dissatisfied with this. In order to protect Guan Yu's life, Zhang Liao persuaded Cao Cao to give more generous grace to tie Guan Yu's heart, and Cao Cao promised. Zhang Liao's rescue of Guan Yu and Guan Yu's rescue of Zhang Liao by Baimen Lou can be described as similar.
However, although Zhang Liao saved Guan Yu's body, he could not keep his heart. No matter how deeply Cao Cao was kind, Guan Yu could not forget Liu Bei, which made Zhang Liao embarrassed. Zhang Liao asked Guan Yu, "If Liu Bei dies, how will you treat him?" Guan Yu replied, "Willing to come from the underground." "Leave no room for it. In order not to embarrass his old friend, Guan Yu was willing to make meritorious contributions to Cao Cao first and then leave.
The Battle of the White Horse, Guan Yu beheaded Yan Liang; the Battle of Yanjin, Guan Yu killed Wen Ugly; the Battle of Runan, Guan Yu defeated Gong Du. In these three battles, Guan Yu had completed his meritorious service, and after hearing liu Bei's news, Guan Yu was ready to leave.
Cao Cao knew that Zhang Liao and Guan Yu had a deep affection, so he came to inquire. Zhang Liao thought to himself that Guan Yu was a person who cherished love and righteousness, and wanted to keep Guan Yu without other plans, only to play the emotional card, so he said: "How is the friendship between brother and Xuande better than the friendship between brother and brother?" ”
What does this mean? You have saved me, I have saved you, this is a lifelong friendship, is there more friendship under the heavens than this? Hearing Zhang Liao's question, Guan Yu smiled slightly and replied, "I am friends with my brother and friends; I and Xuande are friends and brothers, brothers and subjects: How can we talk about it together?" ”
Zhang Liao was helpless and returned to Cao Cao, and Cao Cao avoided seeing Guan Yu in order to keep him, that is, Zhang Liao, and he could not get sick. Guan Yu repeatedly asked for resignation without success, so he wrote a letter of resignation, returning the gold and silver treasures and the original number of beautiful women given by Cao Cao, and the great seal of the Marquis of Hanshouting was also hung on the hall, and then snatched the door and left. When Cao Cao heard this, he was shocked and sighed, "Yun Chang is gone!" ”
