"Appeal to collecting institutions to disclose Rong Geng's achievements and benefit a wider range of people"

The popularity of "Rong Geng Fever" can start from the exhibition "Rong Nai Da - Rong Geng Donation Exhibition of the National Art Museum of China" held at the National Art Museum of China at the end of last year and early this year, it is understood that due to the large number of visitors, the museum rarely extended the exhibition period by one month, and Wu Weishan, director of the National Art Museum of China, described this exhibition as "the most comprehensive exhibition made by the National Art Museum of China so far in the donation exhibition."

Rong Geng's scholarship originates from lingnan "family study", and his collection and academic achievements are concentrated in Beijing, and it can be said that he and Beijing are inextricably linked and inseparable. As a family member of Rong Geng, the painter Luo Bing said that returning to Beijing is the wish of his ancestor Mr. Rong Geng. He believes that "Rong Geng has laid the foundation for the development of modern and contemporary culture in Guangdong."

The study of moving from seal carving to gold stone is

The starting point of Rong Geng's entire academic research

Collectible Weekly: Through his Tibetan seal, can we also outline another aspect of him as a scholar?

Luo Bing: The understanding of cultural scholars on printing is almost a necessary condition, and we have seen the seals given to him by celebrities such as Wen Yiduo and Luo Zhenyu, of which Deng Erya carved the most seals for him, including "Don't save ancient meanings", "Rong Zhai Jinshi", and "Zhaogen Collection". One thing that can be emphasized is that Rong Geng first established his academic system from the study of printing, because he learned seal carving with Deng Erya at a very young age, he studied painting with Rong Zuchun for half a year, and later learned seal carving with Deng Erya. Because of xi seal rule, he later co-edited the "Dongguan Yinren Biography" with Rong Zhaozu, and then began to enter the compilation of the "Jin Wen Compilation".

Therefore, when we consider his later achievements, we must first see that the study from seal carving to gold stone should be the starting point of Mr. Rong Geng's entire academic research.

Collector's Weekly: Can it be said that the original guide to Rong Geng's scholarship was Deng Erya?

Luo Bing: From seal engraving to jin literature, to the first draft of the "Jin Wen Bian", the foundation was completed in Dongguan, that is, under the guidance of Deng Erya, and in 1922, when he went north to meet Luo Zhenyu, the first draft of the Jin Wen Bian had been completed. It was also because of this work that Luo Zhenyu recommended him to Ma Heng, who was then the director of the Archaeological Research Office of the Guoxuemen of the Institute of Peking University, and was admitted as a graduate student of Peking University.

It can be said that Dongguan is the starting point of Rong Geng's academic exploration, and to be more specific, Rong Geng's academic starting point should be "home learning" in Lingnan, and his grandfather Rong Heling and grandfather Deng Rongjing are both qing Tongzhi's jinshi. It can be said that "rich collection, heavy education", profound family learning has created An attitude of Mr. Rong Geng's adherence to orthodox scholarship.

Donate to countries one by one

Collection Weekly: Many people are curious, why did they bring Mr. Rong Geng's collection to Beijing?

Luo Bing: Looking at mr. Rong Geng's information on leaving Peking University and returning to Lingnan in 1946, we can see that he left Beijing with regrets. When I was sorting out his literature and collection, I secretly decided that I would help him return to Beijing. Judging by the sensational effect of the unprecedented one-month postponement of the exhibition at the National Art Museum of China, I did it, and I felt that he had fulfilled his wish.

Collector's Weekly: The regret you are talking about is that fu Si Nian accused him of being "not patriotic enough" at that time, right?

Luo Bing: In fact, patriotism has always run through Mr. Rong Geng's life, as early as 1936, when the Chinese Faculty And Staff Association of Yenching University was established, Rong Geng was elected as a director and participated in the organization of the signing of the Anti-Japanese Declaration. In 1945, on the occasion of Japan's unconditional surrender, he was in dongguan Xinguan Baoxian Hall in front of Ming Chen Li's "Writing Pictures in the Rain", and he fell into the clouds, "The restoration of Shenzhou, the shame of the country, in the fifty-second year of this year, is the snow, and I am happy to remember this." Judging from the various documents he left behind, we are completely sure that Rong Geng's fist is patriotic. Not to mention how noble it was that he, on his own, almost scattered his family wealth to collect precious cultural relics and donated them to the country one by one in peacetime.

Collector's Weekly: He is not a man of great wealth, what does he rely on to collect so many collections?

Luo Bing: This also reflects his level of identification, many cultural relics no one dares to receive, he will judge by his eyesight, in the words of his diary is "insufficient financial resources, all rely on eyesight." He tends to receive very good works at very low prices, often with a record of buying at a low price and selling at a high price. Some calligraphy and painting works do not even have a money, he can also judge, which shows that his traditional education is very high.

Contributions to the fine arts were not valued

Collection Weekly: What is Rong Geng's inspiration for the current Lingnan scholars?

Luo Bing: First of all, for his achievements, we cannot limit it to paleography or the study of gold scripts, and many scholars still stay at this level. Looking back at the beginning of the twentieth century, from the traditional hermeneutics to modern archaeology, at this historical juncture, he was also one of the representatives who promoted the development of the discipline. Although there are many studies on him at present, there is still no attention to one aspect, that is, his contribution to art, his contribution to art history. In the 1960s, he compiled a "Short Record of Song Zhai Calligraphy and Painting", which recorded more than 800 calligraphers and painters since the Tang Dynasty, more than two million words, the last one compiled was Wu Jingshan, and on it was Mr. Liang Shixiong, this huge work was published by the Zhonghua Book Company ten years ago, but it has not received corresponding attention.

Collector's Weekly: In your opinion, how should you position him in terms of art?

Luo Bing: Through the in-depth combing of Mr. Rong Geng's old collection in the past few years, I deeply feel that he is a very remarkable calligraphy and painting theorist, historian of calligraphy and painting, and calligrapher and painter.

He liked the paintings of Shen Zhou, Dong Qichang and Yun Nantian, but never collected the works of Xu Beihong, Qi Baishi, Wu Changshuo, and Huang Binhong, because in his eyes, these painters were not yet orthodox. However, he collected the calligraphy of Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Gao Jianfu and others, and he also deliberately promoted the construction of the art history of Guangdong calligraphy and painting.

He not only donated artworks, but also donated his research manuscripts to major institutions. I hope and call on major institutions to seize the time to make more of Mr. Yung's research public in due course so that his results can benefit the wider population.

I think that in general, the enlightenment that Rong Geng gave to the present as a scholar is that in order to become a painter, reading is indispensable, and it is necessary to have a wide range of knowledge and a rigorous attitude towards learning. Mr. Rong Geng uses his own knowledge to support the collection, and through the collection to enhance his own learning, complement each other. It can be said that Rong Geng has laid the foundation for the development of modern and contemporary culture in Guangdong.

Journalist's Note

The audience writes "The Light of the Nation"

Talking about Mr. Rong Geng at Luo Bing's home, the more he talked about it, the more excited he became, "For Mr. Rong Geng, I have endless things to say, especially after the exhibition in Beijing, seeing the audience's reaction, let me feel a thousand emotions." Subsequently, he showed reporters the guestbook of the exhibition, a thick one, densely written, from children to elderly people over ninety years old, one after another expressed their respects, among them, Mr. Wan Jun, who was signed as a ninety-two-year-old and decadent, wrote: "Taishan is extremely human, admired throughout the ages." Judging from the crooked handwriting, "Yu," who should still be a teenager, wrote: "The light of the nation."

From the major cultural institutions, mr. Rong Geng has donated cultural relics, whether it is quantity, quality, or variety, can be called unmatched, as Luo Bing said, "How noble this is." ”
