Lanzhou, a city where the Yellow River runs through the city, since the establishment of the first party organization in Gansu in Lanzhou in 1925, has gone through the baptism of the agrarian revolution, the War of Resistance Against Japan and the War of Liberation, and countless communists and benevolent people have written a brilliant revolutionary chapter in Lanzhou with ideals and beliefs, and have also left Lanzhou with rich red historical and cultural resources. Excavating red resources, telling red stories well, and inheriting red genes are the new missions entrusted to each of us in the new era. In 2020, the "website, WeChat public platform" of the Lanzhou Office Memorial Hall of the Eighth Route Army opened a column "Curator Several Family Treasures" and launched "Yang Jingren: Doing Revolution for the Poor, National Unity All the Way". Listening to the experts' explanations and feeling the pulse of the times, "tracing the past and touching the present" let us walk into the years of burning passion together, and use our own practice and understanding to remember the martyrs and inspire future generations.

Yang Jingren

Yang Jingren, formerly known as Yang Xizhen, a native of Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, is a Hui nationality, born in 1918 to a poor family of Islamic clerics, and successively studied at The Fourth Primary School of Xiaoyou Street in Lanzhou City and the First Middle School of Gansu Province. In his youth, he pursued progress and accepted Marxism. In 1937, he joined the Communist Party of China and served as a member of the Propaganda Committee of the Lanzhou Huimin Special Branch of the Communist Party of China. Under the leadership of the Gansu Working Committee of the CPC, the Islamic Society and the Muslim Education Promotion Association were used to carry out anti-Japanese and democratic propaganda and education activities among the Hui people. In March 1941, he was introduced to Yan'an by the Lanzhou Eighth Route Army Office in Gansu, where he entered the Ethnic Affairs Department of The Northern Shaanxi Public School and served as the secretary of the first class of party branch secretaries. In August of the same year, he was appointed by the Central Committee to serve as a party representative and regimental political commissar of the Hui People's Cavalry Regiment, and together with other Hui Communists, after arduous and meticulous work, this unit was trained into a people's army led by the Party. From 1945 to 1949, he successively served as deputy head of the Longdong Foreign Affairs Group, chief of the Ethnic Section of the United Front Work Department of the Northwest Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, leader of the organ guerrilla team, member of the Nationalities Committee of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region Government, and member of the Northwest Military and Political Committee.

Lanzhou at the beginning of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression

During his studies at The Fourth Primary School in Xiaoyou Street, Lanzhou, Yang Jingren not only worked hard to learn cultural knowledge, but also gained an understanding of the dark old society and national oppression, and planted the seeds of resistance in his young soul. After the "918" incident, the mountains and rivers of the motherland were shattered, the people were displaced, and they deeply felt that the rise and fall of the country was responsible, Yang Jingren and his classmates walked out of the school gate to march and give speeches in the streets, shouting the slogan of "Down with Japanese imperialism" and demanding that the Kuomintang government stop the civil war and unite to resist Japan. Under the education and inspiration of Mr. Lu Xun and left-wing literary works, Yang Jingren, from sympathizing with the toiling masses, and then initially understood the path of struggle for liberation, from the second grade of junior high school in 1933, under the pseudonyms of Spring Soul, Spark, and Tie Fen, published literary and artistic works in various newspapers and periodicals in Lanzhou, exposing the dark rule of the Kuomintang and reflecting the suffering of the workers and peasants. Yang Jingren's early literary works can clearly see the infiltration and profound influence of the May Fourth New Culture Movement and left-wing literature on this northwestern student. The texts of each work are all "vernacular texts" advocated by new literature, focusing on the universal narrative of class antagonism, paying attention to the unfortunate encounters of the oppressed classes and the rebellion and struggle of individuals against the dark reality, the pain of the cold reality and the withered hometown, the sentimentality of the fragility of weak and small lives, the concern for the suffering of workers and peasants, the attack on social injustice and injustice, and the call for joining the people to resist the war, full of Yang Jingren's feelings of worry about the country and the people in his youth.

Fresh Weijun

In 1936, Yang Jingren was admitted to gansu provincial first middle school (now Lanzhou no. 1 middle school), and then became acquainted with a group of hui progressive young people. In July 1937, the All-Out War of Resistance broke out. In order to mobilize the broad masses of the Hui people to unite against Japan, Yang Jingren, Xian Weijun and others founded the "Islamic Society", an anti-Japanese rescue organization for Young Hui people, and was responsible for propaganda work in the society. In October of the same year, the Gansu Working Committee of the Communist Party of China was established, and Wu Hongbin, a member of the Working Committee responsible for propaganda and Huimin work, recruited party members and established party organizations among the Hui people. He was introduced to join the Communist Party of China with Xian Weijun, Ma Mingde, An Wenwei and other hui progressive youths. At the same time, the Gansu Working Committee set up a special branch directly under the Huimin, with Xian Weijun as the secretary of the branch and Yang Jingren as the propaganda committee member. During the Spring Festival in 1938, Yang Jingren, through Xie Jueya, invited Mao Zemin and other communists from Lanzhou to the Islamic Society to explain and publicize the party's anti-Japanese national united front policies and guidelines and guide the work of the Islamic Society. Yang Jingren, through Xie Jueya and Wu Hongbin, had close contact with the Eighth Route Army's office in Gansu and used his special status to coordinate with various parties to cover and rescue captured and scattered soldiers of the Western Route Army. When there were too many Xilu army personnel who found the office, too conspicuous, and inconvenient to stay in the office, Wang Dingguo often found Yang Jingren, secretly hid the Western Route Army personnel in the vegetable cellar of Yang Jingren's house, rested and waited for the opportunity, and then managed to escort them to Yan'an through the office.

Wu Hongbin

In the autumn of 1938, the membership of the Islamic Society grew to more than 300 people, and branches were established in the Hexi region of Gansu, Linxia, and Ningxia Xihaigu, Longde, and Qinghai. In order to further use the Huimin organizations to carry out anti-Japanese and national salvation activities, Yang Jingren and Xian Weijun, with the support of the Hui masses, transformed the "Gansu Muslim Education Promotion Association," which had long been controlled by the Kuomintang diehards and Hui gentry, into the "Huimin Education Promotion Association." After election, Yang Jingren and Wu Hongye were elected as members of the Standing Committee, and Xian Weijun, Ma Mingde, and others were elected as committee members. At the same time, branches have been established in more than 20 counties in the province. At the same time, they actively carried out anti-Japanese propaganda and ideological education among the Hui people by holding forums on current affairs, compiling and distributing the "Echo" periodical, running propaganda posters, using the Hui schools and night schools they run to organize Hui young people to study culture, and giving speeches in Muslim populated areas. During this period, the Huimin Special Branch also seized the opportunity of well-known figures from cultural circles throughout the country to come to the northwest to publicize the anti-Japanese struggle to save the country, and invited famous scholars Gu Jiegang, Zhang Zhongshi, Mao Dun, and other such scholars as the Islamic Society and the Huimin Education Promotion Association to make reports on the anti-Japanese situation and academic reports, so as to arouse the enthusiasm of the Hui people's youth for resisting Japan, thus effectively cooperating with and supporting the anti-Japanese salvation movement in Lanzhou. In the winter of 1938, according to the instructions of the Gansu Working Committee, Yang Jingren and Xian Weijun went to Xi'an with Xian Weijun to report to Zhou Enlai on the work of the Hui people in Lanzhou, and then went south to Wuhan together, under the pseudonym of the Hui people of Gansu, urging the anti-Japanese people to present the banner and sword to Chiang Kai-shek, and also specially asked Comrades Zhou Enlai and Dong Biwu on how to carry out ethnic work in the Kuomintang area, and took the opportunity to learn from the experience of the anti-Japanese salvation and progress group on the ground. Dong Biwu and Bogu (Qin Bangxian) met in Wuhan and instructed them to be as hidden and capable as possible and to unite all those who could be united to actively carry out anti-Japanese and national salvation activities. In Wuhan, Yang Jingren and Xian Weijun also contacted the Chinese Hui Youth Anti-Japanese Salvation Congress. After returning to Lanzhou, they organized the establishment of the Gansu Branch of the Chinese Huimin Anti-Japanese Salvation Congress to further organize the broad masses of Muslims to persist in the activities of resisting Japan and saving the country.

Zhang Jie, secretary of the Yuzhong County Party Committee

In October 1937, the first rural party group in Lanzhou was established in Yingjiawan Village, Jinya Town, Yuzhong County. At the end of the year, the first rural party branch, the Jinya branch, was established. In January 1938, the Chengguan Branch of Yuzhong County was established, and by this time, Yuzhong already had two branches and 16 party members. In order to consolidate this good momentum of development, unite more people to join the embrace of the party, and throw themselves into the war of resistance of the whole nation, the Gansu Working Committee of the CPC decided to establish the Yuzhong County Cpc Committee. According to Yang Jingren's suggestion, Zhujiagou Village is a pure Hui residential area, inhabited by all Hui villagers, with less contact with the outside world, and at the same time, the Yuzhong County Government of the Kuomintang has a relatively loose management of this area, and there are no schools here, if you run a primary school here, you can use this as a cover to engage in underground work, with good hidden conditions. On April 21, the Gansu Working Committee of the COMMUNIST Party of China reported to the CPC Central Committee: "The best place in the outer counties is Yuzhong County, where there are 16 comrades who are doing some work among the peasants and are preparing to establish a county party committee in the future." Jinjiaya has a peasant branch...". In May, the Gansu Work Committee decided to establish the Yuzhong County Party Committee and sent Students From Yan'an Party School Zhang Jie (formerly known as Zhang Enke, Huimin, a native of Cangxian County, Hebei Province) and Jin Shaobo (also known as Jin Sanjin, Huimin, Sichuan) to work in Yuzhong County, with Zhang Jie as the secretary of the county party committee. The main task of the county party committee is to strengthen the ideological and knowledge education of party members and consolidate and develop underground party organizations. The county party committee has successively established two Huimin primary schools in Zhujiagou and Da ren da nang, with Zhang Jie as the principal of zhujiagou Hui min primary school and Jin Shaobo teaching at da ren da nang primary school. In order to help the county party committee carry out its work as soon as possible, Yang Jingren often returned to Zhujiagou and secretly discussed organizational development and anti-Japanese salvation matters with Zhang Jie, secretary of the Yuzhong County CPC Committee, Zheng Zhengyuan, member of the Organization Committee of the Gansu Working Committee of the CPC, Chen Chengyi, secretary of the Lanzhou Municipal CPC Committee and director of the Organization Department, and Jin Shaobo at Zhujiagou Primary School. In order to unite the Hui people and raise their consciousness, with the help of Yang Jingren, the Yuzhong County Party Committee established the Yuzhong Branch of the Gansu Huimin Education Promotion Association at the Xiguan Mosque in the county seat, and elected Zhang Jie, Ma Tengjiao and Ma Deyuan as standing committee members. Yang Jingren attended the inaugural meeting as a representative of the Gansu Huimin Education Promotion Association and elaborated on the purpose and tasks of the Huimin Education Promotion Association. Under the correct leadership of the Gansu Working Committee and the Lanzhou Municipal Party Committee, and with the help of Yang Jingren and others, the work of the Yuzhong County Party Committee and the Yuzhong Branch of the Huimin Education Promotion Association was carried out smoothly.

Yang Jingren (first from right) with colleagues in Lanzhou

In order to help the county party committee do a good job as soon as possible, Yang Jingren helped Zhang Jie and Jin Shaobo rent a cave in the cave of the poor peasant Ma Lanxiang's family in Zhujiagou Village. Yang Jingren, Chen Chengyi, Jin Shaobo, Fu Congjian, and others often gathered in Zhujiagou in the name of Zhang Jie. Gradually, the Ma Lanxiang couple learned their true identity and the work they were engaged in. After a period of investigation, through organizing conversations, the Yuzhong County Party Committee developed Ma Lanxiang to become an underground traffic officer of the county party committee, and the restaurant opened by Ma Lanxiang and his wife in Jinya Town became the underground liaison station of the county party committee. Ma Lanxiang was bold and careful, witty and clever, often cleverly hiding some letters under the bun, in the placket, and in the belly of the fish, and completed one task after another brilliantly, and was known as "Longshang Ah Qing Sister-in-law". One year, a secret note was sent from Lanzhou asking her to quickly deliver it to Yang Jingren. In order to prevent the agents from interrogating, she rolled the note into a small roll and stuffed it into the brush sleeve, then stuffed it into the belly of the fish, and then poured water on the fish to freeze it into an ice fish, and asked her husband to accompany her to pretend to be a relative, and sent the information safely to the destination. One evening in the early winter of 1940, the wind roared and the snow flew. Two merchants dressed as men walked into Ma Lan Xiang's restaurant. "Treasurer, pour two bowls of tea first." One of the big men said shaking the shivering snowflakes. While they were eating, Ma Lanxiang vaguely heard the two of them say something, "Zhu Jiagou will start at dawn..." She felt that something was wrong, would what these two people said be related to Yang Jingren and Zhang Jie? Anyway, you have to find a way to tell them. By the time these two "uninvited guests" were sent away, it was already more than 9 p.m., and there were no five fingers to be seen outside. Ma Lanxiang was embarrassed, he went to Zhujiagou bar, a woman's family one foot deep and one foot shallow to walk more than 30 miles of mountain road is likely to be wrong, but if you don't go, in case something happens, what can you do? At this moment, she suddenly remembered a person, Zhou Huanfeng, a progressive young man in Fengjiawan Village. If you tell him about this and let him run to Zhujiagou, this letter will definitely be delivered. Ma Lanxiang took a wooden stick in his hand, crashed into the snow, and went straight to the village of Fengjiawan, five miles away. Zhou Huanfeng, who woke up from his sleep, heard this sudden news, realized the seriousness of the problem, and ran from the snow to Zhujiagou to report the letter. At 4 a.m. the next day, five or six men on horseback with guns attacked Zhang Jie's residence in Zhujiagou, but they pounced. In the first month of 1941, Zhang Jie and his party wanted to go to Huixian County to carry out work. Ma Lanxiang put on the ox cart and carried them all the way to the water slope beam at the junction of Yuzhong and Dingxi. Shortly after they left, a man came to the restaurant, sneakily looked around, and left without a few bites of rice. The next day, just after opening the door, he came again, asked the treasurer if he was at home, and Ma Lanxiang thought to himself: This person is raw, eating is not like eating, and he still loves to inquire. Then he said casually, "Go abroad and slaughter cattle." The man said, "Sister-in-law, ask me, does Yang Jingren often come here?" It was my uncle, and I was in a hurry with him. As soon as Ma Lanxiang heard this, he understood everything in his heart, because Yang Jingren did not have any nephews at all. She calmly replied: "I don't know, I am busy greeting guests all day, where do I have the kung fu to inquire about the names of guests." The man was bored and had to leave the restaurant in a daze. The next day, the man broke in again. Before his feet could step into the door, he shouted menacingly, "Where is Yang Jingren?" And Zhang Jie, who is with them, where have these people gone? "Didn't I say that, I don't know!" Although Ma Lanxiang was soft and delicate, he answered firmly. After being interrogated for a long time, Ma Lanxiang skillfully coped with it and did not reveal any clues. Seeing that the soft one did not work, it came hard, and the man wolf generally pounced on Ma Lanxiang's hair and slapped her several times. Seeing that there was still no response, he slammed Ma Lanxiang's head against the wall. He asked in a loud voice, "Yang Jingren, where are they?" Do you say it or not?" Ma Lanxiang calmly brushed his messy hair and said loudly, "I don't know! I have come here as a guest, what Yang Jingren is not Yang Jingren. The man was so ashamed and angry that he took a piece of hot charcoal from the fire of Zhengwang and shouted, "Say it or not?" In a fit of rage, he jerked Ma Lanxiang's pant legs up and forcibly pressed her against the charcoal block. The answer is "I don't know."

Yang Jingren in his youth

Yang Jingren's daughter Yang Lan told the author in Beijing: "I once read the memoirs written by Uncle Zhang Jie himself, and he said that it was because my grandfather Yang Runlin met the father of the horse captain of the reconnaissance team when he was punching, and the father of the horse captain told my grandfather: The Manla Zhang Jie who you often come and go to study is a communist, and my son wants to arrest him. At that time, it was snowing heavily, and his daughter had just been born, and he couldn't bear to go, so he didn't leave on the first day of the New Year, didn't leave on the second day of the first year, and dragged it until the third day of the first year. ”

With the assistance of patriotic progressives, he rushed to Yan'an

Yang Deliang

The Gansu Working Committee has always regarded the continuous expansion of the anti-Japanese national united front as one of the important tasks in leading the anti-Japanese and rescue activities of all ethnic groups in Lanzhou, and has attached special importance to promoting the participation of Kuomintang military and political leaders and upper-level figures among the Hui nationalities in the northwest to participate in the anti-Japanese work. The united front targets of the Lanzhou Huimin Special Branch were mainly hui local figures who had contradictions with the Kuomintang authorities and feudal and diehard forces, such as Ma Xiwu, Ma Rui, director of the Ningxia office in Lanzhou, bao Ziming, a businessman, and Zhang Shanqing, manager of the Guangming Match Factory. Yang Jingren and the Huimin Special Branch also carried out united front work against Ma Huanwen (a member of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee of the Kuomintang) who was more stubborn in his thinking, and Yang Deliang (a Hui in Yunnan) in southern Huzong. Through his work, Ma Huanwen gave the "Islamic Society" column every half or January in the "Republic of China Daily" in which he was responsible, in order to publish articles mobilizing the Hui people to resist Japan and save the country; Yang Deliang also funded some funds for the "two sessions". The United Front work of the Hui people's special branch against the Hui people has played an important role in promoting the formation and development of the anti-Japanese national united front in Lanzhou. In June 1940, the Gansu Working Committee of the Communist Party of China was sabotaged by the Kuomintang authorities, and several of the main leaders and members of the Work Committee were arrested one after another, and the Party Central Committee immediately instructed to stop the Party's activities in various parts of Gansu, strictly conceal the Party organization, and mobilize comrades whose identities had been exposed to Yan'an. In this situation, with the consent of the Gansu Work Committee, Yang Jingren went to Ningxia to live for half a year in the name of the Huimin Education Promotion Association's donation education foundation, so he sneaked back to Lanzhou in the winter. At this time, the environment was extremely dangerous, and the Gansu Working Committee of the CPC instructed Yang Jingren to leave Gansu for Yan'an as soon as possible. But at this time, the Kuomintang agents were closely monitoring him, and it was very difficult to escape. In the midst of the crisis, Yang Jingren thought of two Hui people he knew when he was carrying out the united front work at the upper levels, one surnamed Wu, who was the director of the Ningxia Unified Taxation Bureau, and the other surnamed Yang, who was the brigade commander of the Kuomintang garrison (that is, Yang Deliang, who was already a military commander at this time), and these two people had spoken for Yang Jingren. Yang Jingren took this opportunity to send a telegram to them, and the other party called back: "The marriage has been completed, and the method is detailed." With this telegram, Yang Jingren published an engagement notice in the Republic of China Daily, and also asked about the price of jewelry and clothing, and showed the agents some cloth patterns, so that the agents were convinced that he was going to Ningxia to get married, but he secretly entrusted someone to buy a ticket to Pingliang. After Yang Jingren left Lanzhou, the Kuomintang agents discovered that they had been deceived and quickly reported to their superiors, and the Kuomintang Provincial Party Department immediately sent a telegram to the garrison, ordering Yang Jingren to be captured along the way, and the case was immediately brought to justice on the spot. Zhu Shaoliang, the commander of the Kuomintang Eighth Theater in Lanzhou, sent a secret telegram to Yang Deliang, saying that Yang Xizhen (Yang Jingren), a young student in Lanzhou, had fled to northern Shaanxi and defected to the Communists, and that the commander of the army had blocked the arrest and delivery department at Pingliang. At that time, Li Jingbao was the director of the confidential office of the military department and the leader of the adjutant group. Telegrams from the military department pass through his hand. When he sent the translated telegram to the military commander Yang Deliang, Yang looked grim and said, Yang Xizhen is a communist and must not be revealed, and you are responsible for sending him out of Pingliang. He called back to Lanzhou and said, "I have not seen Yang Xizhen over the peace," adding that this matter must be kept secret. Li Jingbao only knew that when Yang Deliang was stationed in Lanzhou, because he was a Hui citizen with Yang Xizhen, he often went to the mosque to have some contact, and his relationship was good, but he did not know that Yang Xizhen was a Communist Party, and he would not think about this aspect at all. The commander handed over such secrets to him, which showed that his relationship with the commander was extraordinary. He quietly sent someone to send Yang Xizhen out of Pingliang, and called back to Zhu Shaoliang in Lanzhou. Yang Jingren left Pingliang for Xi'an, and with the help of the CCP organization, arrived in Yan'an, the holy land of revolution that he had long aspired to, in mid-March 1941.

Yang Jingren, who served as the political commissar of the Muslim Cavalry Regiment in 1941

In June 1941, after the failure of the third uprising of the Hui people in Ningxia Hai (former) Gu (former), Ma Siyi, the commander of the rebel army, led the remaining 230 people to break out of the siege of the Kuomintang army and defected to the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, where they were reorganized into a cavalry regiment. These Hui soldiers originally entered the border areas with the wish of the Eighth Route Army to help them fight the Kuomintang. However, at that time, it was the period of cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communists, and the Eighth Route Army could not go out to fight the Kuomintang. Coupled with the fact that they miss their hometown and relatives, life in the border area is very difficult, and many people have great fluctuations in their thinking and always want to leave the border area. How to stabilize this group of people and transform them into anti-Japanese forces became a big problem for the government of the border region at that time. Finally, the Northwest Bureau of the CPC Central Committee selected Yang Jingren and sent him to serve as a political instructor in the Huimin Cavalry Regiment. He was just 24 years old. After Yang Jingren took office, he spent all day with the officers and men of the Huimin Cavalry Regiment, giving political lessons to cadres and soldiers, painstakingly educating and persuading them, and teaching them to study culture hand in hand, so that their ideological consciousness could be rapidly enhanced and their emotions gradually stabilized. At the end of 1941, the regimental commander Ma Siyi was brutally killed because of the old and young in his family, and without the approval of his superiors, he led his troops to leave the station without authorization to prepare to return to his hometown to avenge his hatred. When Yang Jingren learned of this, he rushed to persuade him with funds and gifts, painstakingly explained the dangers of this operation, and advised him not to act hastily; at the same time, he also indicated that if he was determined to go back, he would never obstruct him, and the old, young, sick and disabled would make proper arrangements if they wished. As a result, as soon as Ma Siyi left the border area, he was surrounded and intercepted by the Kuomintang troops, and the troops collapsed as soon as they touched it, and finally only a few dozen people were left to return to the border area. Yang Jingren warmly welcomed the organization and still let Ma Siyi serve as the regimental commander, so that the vast number of officers and men of the Huimin Cavalry Regiment could truly feel the trust and support of the CPC. Subsequently, Yang Jingren formulated an education and training plan based on reality: politically grasping anti-Japanese patriotic education, militaryly grasping infantry and cavalry platoon coaches, and culturally grasping the "three meetings" (that is, being able to read, write, and use). After arduous and meticulous work, the Huimin Cavalry Regiment has made great progress, become a revolutionary armed force under the leadership of the Party, and played a great role in publicizing and implementing the Party's ethnic and religious policies. Later, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Lin Boqu and other leading comrades received Ma Siyi, accompanied by Yang Jingren every time. With the efforts of Yang Jingren and others, this unit composed of Hui people and you Yong was transformed into a people's army that was brave and good at war. In 1947, when the Kuomintang Huzong invaded Yan'an in the south, Yang Jingren led this Hui army to participate in the Cold Waist Blockade And covered the retreat of the central authorities from Yan'an.
