In the 1870s, Harry Pointer, a photographer from the southern British city of Brighton, became famous for taking card portraits of cats. As a photographer, Berndt initially took common photographs of cats sleeping in baskets or drinking milk, just like everyone else, but around 1870, he first began to add various props to the photos, and to capture the specific poses of the cats and add some humor to the photos. He may have been one of the first accomplished pet cat photographers, and by 1884 Berndt had published more than 200 photographs in the album The Brighton Cats.

At the beginning of the last century, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) declared that August 8 of each year is International Cat Love Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the holiday for human feline friends, and it is not too much to get more attention for cats.
