Recently, Guangdong Wengyuan Qingyun Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve through the CCTV "Eye of the Secret Realm" column organized infrared camera monitoring project to detect the national second-level protected animal sambar deer, this is the first time that qingyun mountain provincial nature reserve recorded its wonderful image.
CCTV's "Eye of the Secret Realm" infrared camera monitoring project is organized and implemented by the CNOOC Public Welfare Foundation and the Senhuan Forest Protection Institute of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, and is jointly undertaken by more than 20 nature reserves across the country. A total of 40 infrared cameras were allocated to the Qingyunshan Provincial Nature Reserve, all of which were installed and deployed in early February 2021, and the first batch of data was recovered in July. When the staff sorted out the data, they found that one of the points captured the life traces of the sambar deer, one of which was a mother and son, and the other was a male deer, indicating that the sambar deer in the Qingyun Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve had a stable population.
The sambar deer is the largest deer in the tropical and subtropical regions, with a length of 140-260 cm, a tail length of 20-30 cm, a shoulder height of 120-140 cm, a weight of 100-200 kg, and the heaviest can reach more than 300 kg. The stag has thick, long, three-pointed horns, up to 1 meter long. The coat color is light brown or black brown, and the female deer has a slight reddish color. Dark brown mane on the neck. Body hair is generally dark chestnut brown , no white spots on the arms , and yellowish white under the jaw , abdomen , medial limbs , and under the tail.
The sambar deer feel sensitive, sexually alert, and good at running. Happy group living. Active in the morning, evening and evening, resting during the day. He prefers to forage at the water's edge, feeding on grasses, fruits, leaves and shoots. In the summer, it is good to bathe in the mountain stream, hence the name sambar deer.
Qingyun Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve is a window of Wengyuan ecological construction, wild animal and plant resources are very rich, through monitoring in recent years, biodiversity is becoming more and more abundant, new species continue to be discovered.
