In Changhua, Taiwan, sambar deer are frequently injured or lost breeding for domestic deer herds

According to Taiwan's "Lianhe Bao" on July 10, due to human factors, Taiwan's sambar deer habitat has been transferred to high-altitude mountain forests above 1500 meters, but in recent years, it has frequently appeared in the low-altitude Bagua Mountains in Changhua County, and recently 1 man was attacked and injured by sambar deer. Local officials said on the 10th that when the earthquake of September 21, 1999, there was a deer farm in the foothills of the Bagua Mountains in Nantou, Taiwan, where deer herds were lost, and it may be that the deer herds have naturally multiplied in the Bagua Mountains, and because there is no investigation, it is impossible to grasp the number and whereabouts of the deer herd.

On May 14 this year, a Taiwanese sambar deer was hit by a car and injured. Data map of Taiwan's Lianhe Pao

At 7 p.m. on July 4 this year, a man surnamed Ye in Changhua County encountered a pair of sambar deer mother and son while walking, and the mother deer, suspected of protecting the fawn, attacked Ye twice, causing multiple injuries on his body, and his ribs were also kicked and broken by the doe.

The outside world wonders: How can deer be seen everywhere in the Bagua Mountains, which are only 422.6 meters above sea level and belong to hilly landforms?

In fact, this is not the first time that a sambar deer has appeared in the Bagua Mountains, as early as February 12, 2013, when a passenger car passed by the Ershui Township Member's Road in Changhua County, a small sambar deer crossed the road in front of him, and the driving recorder clearly recorded the figure of the sambar deer.

In early December 2017, another sambar deer mistakenly broke into the village of Daitou in Shetou Township, Changhua County, and fell into a dry reservoir and was trapped. Because the sambar deer has intact ears, it can be judged that it is not a captive domestic deer.

In the early morning of March 7 this year, someone saw a sambar deer walking on the street near the retail market on Shetou Township Shedou Road in Changhua County, and after seeing the people, they quickly fled.

On the afternoon of May 14, a car crashed into a sambar deer on the Huatan Township Highway in the foothills of Bagua Mountain. At that time, it was found that the injured sambar deer was a doe about 3 years old, and because there was no ear tag ear piercing, it was determined that it was an "unowned deer". Apparently, the Bagua Mountains already have a certain number of wild sambar deer herds.

The survey shows that there are currently 14 deer farmers in Changhua County, a total of 703 sambar deer, but the breeding sites are far away from the Bagua Mountains, and there is no record of sambar deer escaping.
