Tingjiangyuan Conservation Area - Wonderful Battle of Sambar Deer (Land)!
(IR Camera + Camera Shooting)
The sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), commonly known as the "mountain cow", is larger, the adult male deer is about 130 cm tall, the body length is 130 to 140 cm, the weight is 200 to 250 kg, and the female deer is shorter. It is the largest extant terrestrial wild mammal in Fujian Province.
Earlier, the sambar deer surprised the Sulphur area in the Tingjiangyuan Nature Reserve and staged a classic "land and water battle" with dogs, which was just recorded by the staff with a camera. In recent years, Tingjiangyuan Nature Reserve has used infrared camera monitoring technology to photograph the scene of sambar deer activities in the area many times, and Tingjiangyuan Nature Reserve has become the only known sambar deer distribution area in Fujian Province since the infrared monitoring of wild animals was carried out.
Sambar deer confronting dogs
Sambar deer are mainly distributed in Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hunan and other places in China. The back of the male is generally black brown or dark brown, the ventral surface is yellowish white, the female is lighter and slightly redder than the male, and there are also tan and gray-brown individuals. It inhabits broad-leaved forests, mixed forests, savanna meadows and high grassland belts, and prefers to live in groups, but usually acts alone and has a certain action route. Feeding on grasses, fruits, leaves and young shoots, it is called sambar deer because it likes to forage at the water's edge and bathes in the mountain stream in the summer.
Sambar deer is a national second-level protected wild animal and is listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2013 ver 3.1 – Endangered.1.
