In 2009, the Fu Lei Translation and Publication Award was established to promote the translation and dissemination of French-language literature and academic works in China. Since its inception, the Fu Lei Prize has been supported by many cultural celebrities represented by Nobel Laureates Le Clézio and Mo Yan. In the process of continuous development of cultural exchanges between France and China, the Fu Lei Award rewards translators for their important work as language shuttles. Each year, the Fu Lei Prize selects two of the best Chinese translations from French, one for literature and one for social sciences. In particular, the "Newcomer Award" has been established since 2013 to encourage young translators.

This year's Fu Lei Award received a total of 47 entries, including 35 in the social science category and 12 in the literature category. On September 9, 2021, the preliminary evaluation meeting was held in Beijing, and the jury selected 10 shortlisted works. This year's finalists for the Fu Lei Prize include sociologist and philosopher Didier Eripon's anthropological work The Return to The Homeland, Eric Emmanuel Schmitt's short story collection Ostend's Dreamer, and Elisabeth Ludinescu's Private Dictionary of Psychoanalysis, another testament to the diversity of contemporary French translation in China.

At the press conference, Gao Ming first delivered a speech. He said that the 13th Fu Lei Translation and Publication Award will be announced in Shanghai on November 20 and 21, "This year's choice was in Zhoupu Town, Shanghai, because it was once Mr. Fu Lei's hometown." At the end of his speech, he also specifically mentioned the writer Milan Kundera, "Once, the reporter asked how Kundera's writing style has changed? Kundera replied, 'No, I just changed the translator.' This story amply demonstrates the importance of the translator. We need diverse translators, diverse styles, and a tribute to translators! ”

Dong Qiang said that the purpose of the establishment of the Fu Lei Translation Award is to pass on the light of translators from generation to generation, "We pay special attention to newcomers in the translation industry, and since the sixth Fu Lei Translation Award, we have set up the Newcomer Award." It is worth mentioning that among the translators who signed up for this year's Fu Lei Award, the youngest translator is only 24 years old. At the press conference, Dong Qiang had a dialogue with Wang Wei, the translator who won the "social science category" of last year's Fu Lei Award, who was also one of the judges of this year's Fu Lei Award. "I pay more attention to social science works, 'Return to Hometown' has been very popular lately, and I heard that it will be adapted into a movie." Wang Wei said.

Dong Qiang also introduced the two special guest judges who joined this time, "Mr. Sun Ganlu, vice chairman of the Shanghai Writers Association, this time we invited him to be a literary judge. Readers familiar with him know that in the early literary creation, Sun Ganlu was clearly influenced by modern French literature. Liu Qing, an expert in political science at East China Normal University, was invited as a guest judge in the social science category this time," Liu Qing is a scholar who returned from studying in the United States. In recent years, he has become very popular and has a sharp eye and judgment on many social issues. ”

Subsequently, Wu Jialin, chairman of the jury of the 13th Fu Lei Translation and Publication Award, announced 10 shortlisted works in Chinese and French. Wu Jialin is a writer who has lived in China for many years and is an expert in classical Chinese poetry. In Dong Qiang's view, "the content of the ten books shortlisted this time is very diverse, which is also the original intention of the Establishment of the Fu Lei Translation Award." This award fills a gap and gives French literature, culture and ideas a fixed window of transmission, which is unique in the world. The criterion for our selection is a 'good' word in professionalism — the original work itself is good, and the translation is also good. ”

Yu Zhongxian, a permanent judge of the Fu Lei Translation and Publication Award, told the surging news reporter after the press conference, "Overall, the literary translators are older than the social science translators, and our team of translators is getting younger and younger, and at least one of the youngest shortlisted translators this time is the post-90s." And they dare to touch the more unpopular, cutting-edge, very difficult books. ”

The final winning entries will be announced at the award ceremony held at the Fu Lei Library in Zhoupu Town, Pudong New Area, Shanghai on November 20. On November 21st, the Duoyun Academy flagship store in Shanghai Tower will also hold a number of wonderful activities, including literary lectures and meetings for shortlisted translators.

The Test of The Exotic: Culture and Translation in the German Romantic Period

by Antoiner Bellman

Translation of Chapter Text

Life, Reading, And New Knowledge Triptych Bookstore Co., Ltd

Based on the translations of jena romantic figures such as the Schlegel brothers, this book conducts "archaeological excavations" of the translation practices of the German Romantic period. While Contemporary French translators were still keen to produce "unfaithful beauties", the German Romantics, gathered around athena, chose a translation strategy that was faithful to the original text, in line with contemporary ethics, and extremely beneficial to the Germanic culture that was at this time in its formative stages, and this tendency to be loyal to the other flashed several times in their predecessors (Luther, Herd, Goethe, Hölderlin, etc.). In short, Bellman successfully rescued translation from the previous "vassalization" situation with the help of their interpretation of theoretical concepts and examples: translation behavior can enrich itself with the help of others, and it is worth building a science with translation as the only cognitive object.

"Return to Hometown"

By Didier Elipon

Translated by Wang Xian

Shanghai Culture Publishing House / Houlang Publishing Company

After the death of his father, the author Didier Elipon decided to return to his birthplace of Reims, to the social class in which he was originally born, the group of people he had bid farewell to for thirty years. He goes back to the past, looks back at the history of his family, recalls the working class in his childhood, and how he went from a poor child of a working-class family to a famous intellectual in France... In this extremely intrinsic and subversive spiritual journey, the author thinks about a series of themes such as social class, school education, identity building, etc., and analyzes how people's "personal choices" are affected and determined in different social environments by combing the fate trajectory of different individuals in collective determinism.

Doctrine as a Source of Law: The Course of French Jurisprudence

By Philippe Restarts and Christopher Yaman

Translated by Zhu Mingzhe

Publisher, China University of Political and Law

It was not until around 1850 that the term "doctrine" was used in French jurisprudence. This concept first arose as a product of intuition and was subsequently constructed by the scientific school, which promoted doctrine to the pinnacle of theology. From the 1920s onwards, doctrine was somewhat equated with a French approach. French doctrine constitutes an important community, most of which is composed of critical university teachers, but who often take it upon themselves to codify positive law. This task gives legitimacy to the legal order and doctrine itself.

The Book of Problems (Vol. 1)

by Edmund Jarbes

Translated by Liu Nanqi

Guangxi Normal University Press, Xinmin said

The Book of Problems is a book of memories, wanderings, and listening. This multi-volume work revolves around the simple and sad pastoral of Sarah and Yukel, and persistently interrogates life, freedom, death, etc., which in turn inspire the questions and reflections of fictional wise men and the authoritative interpretation of the book. This song of love and sorrow is, first of all, a book full of hope between the lines. It attempts to allow us to witness a promise that has been prejudged, to witness its birth and its final moments, and to observe how the suffering is multiplied among the persecuted groups, whose victims protest from generation to generation. This is a story about the Book of Immortality, where time has laid its mark.

Gentle Storage

By Paul Morand

Translated by Duan Huimin

Nanjing University Publishing Company

Set in World War I London, Tender Storage portrays three unique female figures whose stories are like a three-fold beauty, allowing us to see the fate of women who have not yet completely changed: Clarice has the taste of an artist and the dominant force at the core, but cannot have perfect love; Delfina, after widowhood, step by step to destruction, rejects the possibility of return; Aurol eventually escapes alone in the conflict between secular life and natural nature. This book shows us the eternal desire of women for happiness, wisdom and love in their hearts. In addition, Proust's long preface to the book became a classic treatise on "literary style".
