In the last issue, I announced the half-life relationship between Wu Mi and Chen Yinke, which was still the end of September, and the goodbye was already November. Locked up for a month, have you forgotten the obsessive and devoted to your friend's loyal dog?

1. Synopsis

Chen Yinke, Tang Yongtong, and Wu Mi studied at Harvard in the early years of the Republic of China, and were known as the "Three Masters of Harvard" because of their outstanding learning. The friendship between Wu Mi and Chen Yinke was forged at Harvard, and it was Wu Mi who was subjugated to Chen Yinke's scholarly virtues and fell under his robe.

Wu Mi has a characteristic of this person, who has talent is good to whom, and for Chen Yinke, it is particularly good. When Wu Mi Xuecheng returned to China, he also made a special trip to visit Chen Yinke's father, Chen Sanli, and later when he was preparing to establish the Tsinghua Institute of Chinese Studies, in addition to inviting Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, and Zhao Yuanren as mentors, he also took pains to invite Chen Yinke from abroad. You know, at that time, Chen Yinke, who was far less famous in Chinese academia than he is now, and this university inquirer studied in Europe and the United States for more than ten years, without a formal diploma. Why? Talented, willful, he thinks that with the kung fu of the diploma, it is better to read more books he wants to read. This has no diploma, no fame, and immediately let Chen Yinke stand shoulder to shoulder with Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao and Zhao Yuanren, and let everyone accept the Institute of Traditional Chinese Studies, as the director of Wu Mi has done a lot of work behind his back, you can imagine.

When Chen Yinke returned to China to teach, Wu Mi resigned from the post of director of the National College and became a professor of western literature because of the disagreement between the senior management of the school and the senior management of the school. However, Da Mi Mi did not turn a blind eye to the affairs of the National Academy because she resigned from the government, but continued to help Chen Yin Ke advance his salary, find him a house, and take him to know his Tsinghua colleagues. Therefore, Wu Mi wrote in her diary on April 27, 1925: "It took great effort to introduce Chen Lai."

2. But the wound is rare, and may it be a double bird

Wu Mi never went to the parties to ask for credit for these things that Chen Yinke did, and only mentioned them lightly in her diary. Some things, some people, some feelings, are in the heart.

As mentioned before when talking about Wu Mi's love history, Chen Yinke was a good listener of Wu Mi's heartfelt thoughts, and often kindly advised him to read carefully and not to waste too much energy emotionally. Chen Yinke's concept of love is also known to the world through Wu Mi's diary: "Chen Jun also discussed love as a thing... And the judgment: (1) The highest person of love, the world has no one, hanging in the air, and willing to die for it, such as Du Liniang in "Peony Pavilion". (2) Those who are intertwined with others, but have not tasted the pillow together, such as Bao Dai and other unmarried virgins in China. (3) Secondly, there was once a pillow, and it will be remembered forever, such as Siqi and Pan You'an, and the Chinese widow is also. (4) Second, they are husband and wife, and those who have no affair for life. (5) The lowest one, who joins everywhere, but desire is the picture, and does not care about emotion. ”

But does Chen Yinke's view of love all make sense? Not necessarily. "Chen Junyin Keyun 'Is it a great shame for me to learn and be inferior to a person; if a wife is not as good as a person, what shame is there'? And yun 'marrying a wife is only one thing in the life, small and small ears. To put it mildly, it is easy to get away with it. It is foolish not to aspire to the great ambition of learning, but to be conscientious and only to seek a beautiful wife. ’”

Marrying a wife is not a trivial matter, whether it is marrying a humble wife, or doing blind tossing and turning by yourself, the light is gossip and the chicken and dog are restless, and the heavy is the destruction of the family, see Hu Shi, Yu Dafu, Xu Zhimo. If it were not for the family with a virtuous wife, Chen Yinke would only suffer more in the difficult days after blindness.

In 1937, the "Lugou Bridge Incident" broke out, Chen Yinke's father Chen Sanli died of hunger strike, and the Chen family also moved south to join Wu Mi at the Southwest United Conference. Due to the pain and excessive use of the eyes, Chen Yinke's retina fell out and was hospitalized, and Wu Mi went to the hospital every day to accompany him, and he was still worried about whether the Chen family's home was enough.

3. Friendship is in the acquaintance, why should flesh and blood kiss

Wu Mi is not only good to Chen Yinke, which is also related to his advocacy of respect for virtue and righteousness in traditional culture.

Ye Gongqiu, the uncle of Professor Ye Gongchao of the Southwest United University, has a collection of Mao Gongding of the Western Zhou Dynasty, and this treasure is the bronze with the most inscriptions. After the Japanese invasion of China, Ye Gongqiu did not have time to transfer Baoding to avoid Hong Kong, so he instructed his nephew Ye Gongchao to deal with this matter and never let Baoding fall into the hands of the Japanese Kou.

In 1940, Ye Gongchao went to Shanghai to transfer Mao Gongding, but was unexpectedly caught by the Japanese gendarmerie, and after being rescued, he went directly to Chongqing, and never returned to Kunming to deal with the aftermath. Wu Mi helped sort out and sell the books left by Ye Gongchao in Kunming, and together with Ye Gongchao's sister Ye Chongde, contacted the ticket to Hong Kong, and then accompanied Ye Gongchao's family to Kunming Wujiaba Airport.

I know that you must ask, did Mao Gongding fall into the hands of the enemy? No. Mao Gongding is now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, and is called the "Three Treasures of the Forbidden City" together with jade cabbage and meat-shaped stones.

Wu Mi went to Wuhan to teach in 1946, and the next year wuhan had six. A massacre. In response to the students' anti-civil war demonstrations, the military and police went to the campus of The National Wuhan University to arrest the CCP and the NLD people and the shooting of students. Among the teachers who were arrested was Miao Langshan, a Russian professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at Wuhan University, who was released from prison after being rescued. Miao Langshan planned to go south to avoid the wind, and it was Wu Mi who personally sent him to Wuchang Airport, and it was not until Miao Langshan arrived in Guangzhou and called to report safety that Wu Mi left the airport and went home.

Da Mi Mi said: "Teacher Miao is a teacher of the Department of Foreign Languages, I am the head of the Department of Foreign Languages, and I am responsible for The safety of Teacher Miao." ”

In 1949, several universities threw an olive branch to Wu Mi, Tsinghua called him back, and his daughter wanted him to return to Beijing, but he did not choose to go north because of the strong political atmosphere in Beijing and the unpleasant experience of being suppressed to teach at Tsinghua many years ago. The Nationalist government invited him to teach at National Taiwan University, and Lingnan University in Guangzhou invited him, and there was also an old friend Chen Yinke in Lingnan. Wu Mi unexpectedly ran to Chongqing, teaching at Beibei Mianren College, Sichuan Institute of Education, and later merging into Southwest Normal College. Perhaps, Wu Mi feels that Chongqing is closer to her hometown?

In the 1950s, Wu Mi donated six boxes of books he had purchased during his studies in the United States and Europe, as well as teaching at major universities in China, to his Southwest Normal College (now renamed Southwest University). At least 863 books were donated, which were precious foreign language books obtained by Wu Mi in thirty years. Before the donation, Wu Mi also wrote inscriptions for each book, including Chinese translations, author profiles, content summaries, reference bibliographies, etc., and he also wrote personal experiences related to them on some cherished books.

These books accompanied him to the north and south, in the wind and rain, in the war, all sent out, which is no less than sending his own children to other people's families for succession.

In the diary of the old gentleman in the 1950s and 1960s, Deng Xiaoping and Zhou Enlai were mentioned several times. In 1951, Deng Xiaoping was the vice chairman of the Southwest Military and Political Committee in Chongqing, and he actually read the "Collected Poems of Wu Mi", and at the third enlarged meeting of the southwest cultural and educational committee, he gave an example of Wu Mi's three professor friends. Da Mi Mi was noticed by the leader, which was not what he wanted, but felt "very worried", so the diary contained the words: "Deng Gong knows a lot about the inside affairs of the professors in this school".

In 1951 Deng Xiaoping welcomed Ngapoi in Chongqing. A delegation of local governments of Tibet led by Ngawang Jigme travelled to Beijing via Chongqing

In February 1957, Zhou En's arrival in Chongqing, the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee invited Wu Mi to attend the cadre meeting as an observer, changed others, and certainly did not hesitate to attend the meeting, even if there was no invitation, I had to rub it, even if I sat on a cold bench and showed half of my face in a group photo. His old husband was good, and he actually "asked for resignation" on the grounds of motion sickness and vomiting, cold weather, and cold, which shows how reluctant he is to be involved with politics.

Before and after the Cultural Revolution, the situation became increasingly tense, and no place in Beijing, Chongqing, or Guangzhou, where Chen Yinke was located, was a paradise. In 1965, Wu Mi attended the Third Session of the Third People's Congress of Sichuan Province and the Third Committee of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Wu Mi has always been indifferent to politics, and with her age, most of the people attending the meeting are forced by the situation.

Wu Mi contrasts with her youth in her later years

After 1949, although Wu Mi and Chen Yinke were on opposite sides, they had been exchanging letters. In the 1950s, Wu Mi wanted to go south to visit Chen Yinke, but it was not until 1961 that the trip was possible. Chen Yinke, who was blind in both eyes, knew that Wu Mi was coming, and his wife ghostwrote to inform him of the matters that should be paid attention to when he arrived in Guangzhou. Including traffic routes, fare geometry, food and accommodation, etc., one by one written clearly and clearly, and even how many food stamps are thought of, "brother with rice tickets seven or two a day, it seems to be available for two meals, in the morning brother do not buy eggs to give, or no problem." At the end of the letter, he was not at ease, and added two sentences: "Now Guangzhou is the rainy season, please note." Quite cool at night. ”

It is said that this is the letter with the largest number of words sent by Chen Yinke after 1949, and Yin Yin instructed him to have only one meaning: "Da Mi Mi is coming to see me, and I am so happy." ”

If the previous letter was not enough to show Wu Mi's position in Chen Yinke's heart, then when the Chen couple knew that Wu Mi was going to pass through Wuhan to Guangzhou, and hurriedly wrote a letter to Liu Pu in Wuhan, it was simply as if Wu Mi was a treasure. Well, remember the gossip in Wu Mi's diary that broke up Liu Pu's wife and concubines separating their families, and finally being disliked by their wives and concubines. Chen Yinke asked Liu Pu to relay to Wu Mi: "Two or three days before getting on the train in Wuhan, the electricity report knows when to take the first few trains to Sui on the day." The woman Xiao Peng (or other friends) was ordered to greet her at the East Station in a car. ”

The first time a child goes out, the adults tell them every word, but that's all. But this is a 71-year-old grandfather telling another 67-year-old grandfather.

On August 30, when Wu Mi arrived at Chen Yinke's home, it was already midnight, and when she heard that Wu Mi had arrived, Chen Yinke insisted on using crutches to explore the way and groped out of the door. Old friends who have been friends for nearly half a century finally met in Guangzhou and spent four full days talking about the latest situation in the past 12 years. On September 3, Wu Mi's last day in Guangzhou, Chen Yinke wrote four seven-sentence poems, with the general title of "Giving Wu Yu Monk", one of which reads: "Asking The Sick Ning to Resign Shu Dao Is Difficult, Shaking Hands and Shaking Hands with Tears." Twilight is not easy, it should be life away from death do not look. ”

It should be a life away from death, a word into a slur.

On September 8, 1971, Wu Mi wrote to the Revolutionary Committee of the National Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, inquiring about Chen Yinke's news: "Professor Chen Yinke is old, weak and sickly, and blind for a long time, I don't know if he is still healthy and alive, or has died? Where does his wife, Ms. Tang Zhiying, currently reside? Many of Mi and Mr. Chen's friends and students during this period are very concerned about Mr. Chen and are eager to know his true news. Respectfully request your school: (1) reply to the current situation of Professor Chen Yinke; (2) hand over this letter to Mrs. Chen for collection, and ask her to reply to Mi. I can't wait!"

At that time, Wu Mi herself was a "reactionary academic authority", and later became an "active counter-revolutionary", "sent from Chongqing to Liangping County, Sichuan for labor reform". In the criticism fight, Wu Mi fractured her left leg, and later lost her eyesight, and she could not take care of herself. This is an inquiry by an active counter-revolutionary to another bourgeois reactionary academic authority, and it is also the fist-to-fist intention of a dying professor to express his love for his lifelong confidant.

He did not know that Mr. and Mrs. Chen Yinke had died in October and November 1969.

"Sobbing on the cow clothes, the swastika is a history of intestinal breakage; the crippled leopard is hidden, and the nine springs are waiting for the eyes to dry people." This is a pre-prepared tie for Chen Yinke's wife Tang Yun, who suffered from heart disease.

Maybe I don't know anything, but it is a comfort to Wu Mi.

In 1976, Wu Mi, who was ill, was pulled from Chongqing by her sister Wu Xuman back to her hometown of Jingyang, Shaanxi Province, to be raised. In early 1978, Wu Mi died at the age of 84, not waiting for the next year's rehabilitation. In 1981, Wu Mi's ashes were buried at the foot of Saga Mountain in Jingyang, and Gao Yuanbai, a professor at the Department of Chinese of Shaanxi Normal University, wrote an inscription and erected a monument.
