According to public information, Zhang Zhiyuan was born in 1920 and began to work in the clinic of traditional Chinese medicine in January 1944. Zhang Zhiyuan has successively served as a writer of traditional Chinese medicine of the ministry of health, a consultant of the National Research Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a vice chairman of the Shandong Basic Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a consultant of the Shandong Traditional Chinese Medicine Association, a member of the first disciplinary review group of the Senior Review Committee for Teachers' Posts in Colleges and Universities in Shandong Province, and a member of the Medical Science Committee of the Department of Health of Shandong Province.

In addition, Zhang Zhiyuan was also awarded the certificate of "Outstanding Contribution to the Development of China's Medical and Health Undertakings" by the State Council, enjoyed the special government allowance of the State Council, and was awarded the honorary title of "Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine" by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the National Health and Family Planning Commission, and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in May 2017.

According to a report by Life Daily on May 9, 2017, Zhang Zhiyuan has read more than 30,000 books related to traditional Chinese medicine, accumulated tens of millions of reading cards and notes, published more than 10 academic monographs, and published more than 400 academic papers.

Zhang Zhiyuan advocated the theory of "medical ease", believing that "Zhou Yi" was "the first of the Qunjing", which had a major impact on the formation and development of traditional Chinese medicine. He studied the re-origins of various schools, conducted rigorous research on the lives and works of doctors, and filled in many gaps; he also made incisive theories on the analysis and verification of medical scholars.
