Caoheba Village, Wenxian County: Inheriting Rural Customs and Awakening Cultural Memory

A unique walled gate.

Caoheba Village, Tielou Tibetan Township, Wenxian County, is located in the middle valley of the Baimayu River Basin in the south of the Baishui River, and the Baima River flows through the village. This thousand-year-old village, which is "secluded" in the mountains, has become quaint and mysterious because of the existence of the Hakuba people.

Walking into Caoheba Village, you will see the Zhaimen with national characteristics from a distance, and along the Zhaimen, you can see the houses with red eaves and white ridges on both sides of the road, the White Horse Cultural Institute full of ethnic charm, and the huge pillars carved with the mask of "Chi Ge Day...... Every object and scene exudes the aura of this ancient village.

In recent years, thanks to the positive actions of all levels and departments in Longnan City, cultural relics such as Caoheba villagers have been repaired and protected in an orderly manner. The ancient corridor bridges, ancient mill groups, and ancient trees in the village have a new "way of living", and the newly built Caoheba White Horse Soul Square, Tongxin Square, Jiuzhai Folk Wedding Square and other cultural squares have greatly improved the living environment of the villagers.

"Caoheba Village repairs the façade of 96 houses of 16 households in the village according to the three types of protected buildings, reserved buildings and reconstruction buildings, according to the repair plan of the solid wood decoration façade on the second floor and the solid wood façade on the first floor, and builds a new Chige Pavilion, 3 experience rooms, and 6 marble totem poles." Yang Suirong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tielou Tibetan Township, Wenxian County, introduced.

In the process of village restoration, the local cultural relics found are classified according to the nature of the cultural relics protection units, and for the immovable cultural relics protection units, under the premise of ensuring safety, the original appearance is restored, and the movable cultural relics such as utensils, living utensils, clothes, etc. can be collected and protected, and displayed in the learning center.

At the same time as the restoration of ancient villages, livelihood projects were also carried out. Caoheba Village has renovated the water supply and drainage pipes in the village, repaired the aging power and telecommunication lines, and built suitable waste treatment facilities such as garbage bins and transfer stations.

The "bones" of Caoheba Village have been preserved in the restoration of generations, and the unique spiritual civilization of the Baima people has also flourished here.

Every year, Caoheba Village will become a sea of singing and dancing. Starting from the eighth day of the lunar month, every night the whole village of men, women and children go out to "bake the street fire", and everyone gathers firewood, bakes the fire, sings, tells stories, and dances the fire circle dance.

From the thirteenth to the seventeenth of the first lunar month every year, the Baima people of Caoheba Village hold torches, sing loudly on the banks of the Baima River, and dance to their heart's content, expressing the best New Year's wishes of the Baima people.

"Wenxian Chi Ge Day" has been included in the third batch of intangible cultural heritage items list by the State Council, and is an ancient group sacrifice dance with primitive style that still exists in the life of the Baima people. "Chige" means the god of the mountain, and "day" is dance, which is derived from the traditional folk activities of worshipping gods, singing and dancing to entertain people in the long-term farming life and hunting activities of the Baima Tibetan people.

The people of the White Horse sing and dance.

"The sweet five-color wine is not intoxicating, raise the wine glass to the distinguished guests, and the singing does not stop, the wine glass is not dry......"

Accompanied by melodious and stirring folk music, guests and the Hakuba people danced together, not only to feel the hospitality of the Hakuba people, but also to experience a different kind of ethnic customs.

"In order to let the traditional Baima Tibetan culture go out, we have carried out the inheritance of Baima Tibetan culture in an all-round way to attract tourists to learn more about our culture." Yang Suirong cherished these measures: "In recent years, Tielou Township has encouraged the masses to hold folk temple fairs, carried out concentrated publicity activities for Baima culture, and created and choreographed large-scale song and dance dramas "White Horse Imprint" and "White Horse Grand Ceremony" that reflect the folk culture of Baima people. At the same time, it also strives for the National Art Fund project of Beijing Union University, and organizes Baima folk culture handicraft inheritors and cultural enthusiasts in Jiuzhaigou, Pingwu and Wenxian to carry out comprehensive and systematic inheritance, development and innovation training. ”

Today, the protection of Tibetan culture in Baima has yielded fruitful results. After in-depth promotion, the compilation project of the song and dance drama "Baima Han Dictionary" reflecting the folk culture of the Baima people was completed, and the "Chinese Baima Folk Culture Series Series" was published and distributed, and a documentary film was also filmed and produced.

While leaving a mark on the white horse folk culture, it also boosts the development of local rural tourism, Caoheba Village has set up the Shimengou "White Horse Wind" Art Performance Troupe and the Caoheba White Horse Soul Original Ecological Performance Team, invited well-known dance and music choreographers, gathered the left-behind personnel in the village, and choreographed and rehearsed the original ecological song and dance program of "Daga Rhyme". Watching and participating in the performances of these dances has become an important part of showcasing local folklore tourism.

"We will focus on the protection and inheritance of Baima culture, vigorously cultivate folk and folk cultural talents with regional culture, continuously increase the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, and promote the in-depth integration and development of ecology, culture and health tourism with all-for-one tourism as the guide and ecological health care as the feature."
