Seeking a sustainable artistic symbiosis in nature | A review of the highlights of Milan Design Week 2024

In addition to being a fashion capital, Milan is also a city of design. Milan Design Week is recognized as a global design ceiling. During this period, the whole city revolves around this activity, and in every corner of the city, there will be furniture, textiles, lamps, industrial installations and other design categories on display, and people will be immersed in interactive design exhibitions wherever they go.

With more than 2,600 exhibitors and more than 600,000 visitors, the 62nd edition of Milan Design Week reached an all-time high. Milan Design Week brings together the world's best design elites to understand future design trends through experimentation, comparison and in-depth analysis of new forms of design. "Evolution and innovation" are the keywords of Milan 2024, and now Milan has gradually transformed from a trade show with its earliest positioning as a trade show to a more inclusive, value-oriented and sustainable environment and structure, exploring the harmonious coexistence of design and nature, leading us to think about how to better respect and protect our shared environment in the design of the future. This year's exhibition in Milan not only continues to think about the relationship between people and the world, but also reflects the ecological transformation of the entire home production system.

Chinese design in Milan

Mr. Wu Bin, the founder and designer of Infernal Design, brought the "Journey to the Mountain" art installation series "Wandering Mountains: Ephemeral Moments" to appear at the 2024 Milan Design Week at the special invitation of Gilda Bojardi, the editor-in-chief of the well-known Italian design magazine INTERNI and the initiator of Milan Design Week. With the creative concept of "momentality", Infernal Design uses "paper", a very oriental material, to conceive an art installation that integrates Eastern and Western perspectives, responding to the theme concept of this design week "Cross Vision", in order to present different understandings and perceptions of things, and interpret the current and different worlds.

Ma Yansong's "Amazing Walk" installation in collaboration with Amazon is located in the ancient courtyard of the Cortile della Farmacia of the University of Milan. The 7.5-metre-tall installation features a sustainable aluminium structure that evokes a dreamlike landscape of mountains and rivers that weave with clouds and mist to create a three-dimensional landscape painting.

"CHIO" is the first sofa work of its designer, the famous architect Ma Yansong, and it is also the first time that the Boloni brand has chosen to cooperate with an internationally influential architect to co-create. "Oka Chio" is inspired by rough stones found in nature to express the intention of the "ancient future". With this as the soul, the full and smooth three-dimensional blocks of the "CHIO" sofa are stacked into a playful way, and the flowing curved surface looks free and casual, freezing the moment and eternity with agility.

As for the two spaces of the latter, all the "royal" designers are present: in Nilufar Depot's Time Traveler, there are emerging contemporary talents such as Andrés Reisinger, a digital artist and designer who will stage a grand experiential installation in the atrium, and Objects of Common Interest. In the city's galleries, Belgian designer Maarten de Ceulaer's solo exhibition will focus on the new "Superquadric" collection and the existing "stained glass" light series. As the name suggests, the former will involve a functional cabinet system based on rhythm, repetition and balance, and will it be able to surpass his famous "trunk" design?

Conceived as a dialogue between fashion and design, the exhibition unfolds in some of the rooms on the ground floor of the Palazzo Orsini. The designer took inspiration from the abstract map of the floor. In this imaginative space, the diagonal breaks with the classic austerity of the architecture and pays homage to the ever-evolving exoticism. The cornerstone of this perfect map is embodied in the most emblematic pieces of the Giorgio Armani Privé collection, depicting an aesthetic that points to the distant horizon. On a journey from room to room, furniture and clothing merge with Giorgio Armani's memories of travel.

Behind the 35m-long, 6.m-high hanging black wall, objects from the house's archives are displayed, juxtaposed alongside the recently debuted masterpieces and objects. For example, the silver Timour choker necklace introduced in 2002 is placed alongside the new Diapason D'Hermès chair designed by the Hermès atelier this year as a tribute to the jewel, and the original Mangeoire pouch from 1949 (for feeding the horses) is next to the new Derby, also introduced this year. Effectively showcases the virtues of time-honed craftsmanship and luxury design, and is eternally relevant.
