In the opening remarks of the event, Chen Yushan, China co-publisher of MIT Technology Review, welcomed the guests and experts who participated in the summit, and expressed his gratitude to Beijing Tsinghua Industrial Development Research Institute and Zhijiang Laboratory for their support to the event.

He pointed out that human society is transitioning from the era of information technology to an intelligent society, and computing technology has become a key factor in promoting social development. As an important topic of scientific research and industrial application, intelligent computing aims to meet the world's scientific and technological frontiers and major national strategic needs, and studies computing problems at multiple levels, including devices and chips, advanced computers, software and systems, platforms and applications.

That's why MIT Technology Review and DeepTech launched the China Intelligent Computing Innovators Awards in 2022 to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of intelligent computing, discover and promote innovative and practical technical solutions, and promote the development and upgrading of intelligent computing and related industries.

Fu Xiaolong, vice president of Beijing Tsinghua Industrial Development Research Institute, congratulated the selection of young talents and the convening of the event in his speech. As an institution that promotes the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, he said that Tsinghua Industrial Development Institute has cultivated many innovative and entrepreneurial enterprises in the past 25 years, and witnessed the process of young talents turning scientific and technological achievements into enterprises.

Under the new wave of industry, he emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in it and the importance of intelligent computing as a supporting industry. Chen Wei said that after more than 6 years of construction and development, Zhijiang Laboratory has gathered a group of young and promising scientific researchers, who are the pride and wealth of Zhijiang Laboratory. At present, Zhijiang Laboratory is focusing on the main direction of intelligent computing and promoting a new round of development in accordance with the overall strategic path of "1397". In this process, Zhijiang Laboratory not only encourages young researchers to take responsibility, but also hopes to be guided by the concept of open science, open collaboration, integrated innovation, and create an intelligent computing innovation ecosystem.

Zhang Lan, deputy publisher of MIT Technology Review China, said in her speech that MIT Technology Review, as a business think tank born in 1899, predicts the trend of technology and industrial development in the next 3-5 years from three perspectives: "Top 10 Breakthrough Technologies", "35 Science and Technology Innovators under 35", and "50 Smart Companies".

China's huge user base and traffic dividends, as well as the huge market brought about by the soaring demand for data center construction and computing power, are all unique "Chinese soil". All these have stimulated Chinese researchers and enterprises to develop new computing architectures, algorithms, software and hardware, and more advanced computing paradigms for commercial applications. In order to continue to tap these talented and innovative young backbones in the field of intelligent computing and help them get more support, the selection of "China Intelligent Computing Innovators" also came from this.

She mentioned that among the 60 candidates selected for two consecutive years, 31 are from university research institutions and 12 are from enterprises, showing the characteristics of talents in the field of intelligent computing. From the perspective of academic background, the Institute of Systematic Computing and the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have the most selected backgrounds, accounting for 1/6, followed by Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Zhejiang University, covering the top science and engineering colleges in the mainland.

In this context, Zhang Lan officially announced the list of "2023 China Intelligent Computing Innovators" and introduced the award ceremony to recognize these innovators who have made outstanding contributions in theory and practice.

Intelligent Computing + AI and Computing Power "AI Large Models and Advanced Computing Paradigms"

In the roundtable discussion with the theme of "Intelligent Computing + AI and Computing Power: AI Large Models and Advanced Computing Paradigms", Wu Yanjun, head of science and technology, served as the moderator, and experts and guests from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University conducted in-depth discussions on the application of AI technology in different fields, the development of advanced computing paradigms, and the challenges and opportunities of domestic chips.

Cui Huimin, a researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been engaged in programming and compilation optimization for a long time. She emphasized the importance of compilers under different chips (e.g., CPUs, GPUs, various AI-accelerated devices), that is, the upper-layer AI applications are efficiently and transparently mapped to the underlying chips. At present, Cui Huimin and his team are actively promoting the use of domestic chips and collecting user needs to support subsequent development. Xie Peng, a young leading researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, focuses on the research of optical chips and high-dimensional optical computing technology. He discussed the potential of photonic chips, especially in the context of a slowdown in Moore's Law, where photonic computing technology offers a new path for computing power growth. He mentioned that photonic computing has significant advantages in speed and power consumption, and he is currently focusing on high-dimensional optical computing, aiming to build a new computing architecture and develop intelligent photonic processors with ultra-large computing power. Yan Junchi, a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has conducted research on multiple aspects of intelligent computing and computer science. Professor Yan mentioned the importance of combining classical algorithms with AI methods, especially when solving complex problems. In addition, he mentioned the potential of quantum computing technology and explored the design of learnable parameters in the quantum domain to enhance its universality. Zhao Junbo, a researcher at the 100 Talents Program of Zhejiang University, focuses on how to make large AI models land in practical applications. He believes that despite the academic progress of large models, there are still many challenges that need to be solved in practical applications. At the same time, he emphasized the urgency and necessity of the development of domestic chips. Hong Danfeng, a researcher at the Aerospace Information Innovation Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, discussed the prospects of "AI for Earth Sciences" and emphasized the importance of using AI large models and multimodal remote sensing big data in Earth Sciences. He pointed out that despite the rich modeling experience of domain experts, the proliferation of big data has further exacerbated the contradiction between data acquisition and processing capabilities. The advancement of AI technology has provided us with a new paradigm, and now through the development of multimodal AI models, more information and knowledge in remote sensing big data can be fully mined and extracted, so as to achieve "eating dry and squeezing clean". He also emphasized that by combining AI large model technology with physical models, it can help us better understand the planet.

Experts agree that although AI technology has shown great potential in many fields, there are still challenges to overcome in practical applications, including hardware adaptation, algorithm optimization, and engineering implementation.

Intelligent Computing + Bioeconomy: "Computing Accelerates Life and Health"

In the follow-up roundtable discussion of "Intelligent Computing + Bioeconomy: Computing Accelerates Life and Health", Ge Zhifei, an investor from ThinkTech Capital, served as the moderator, and experts from different academic backgrounds shared their insights on the application of artificial intelligence in the field of life sciences. At the same time, they generally believe that although AI technology has great potential in life sciences, it still needs to be closely integrated with experimental science to achieve real scientific breakthroughs.

Professor Wei Leyi of Xiamen University emphasized that in the face of massive genomic data, traditional machine learning methods are limited in feature design, while the development of deep learning has made data-driven analysis possible. This method can get rid of the limitations of experience and effectively mine complex patterns in data, which is of great significance for understanding the function of gene sequences and the mechanism of disease pathogenesis, reflecting the important role of artificial intelligence in the field of life sciences. Li Xiangtao, a professor at Jilin University, pointed out that models based on large amounts of single-cell data, such as scBERT, can handle massive amounts of data and deal with different problems in the single-cell field. In addition, several models have been successfully applied to solve challenges such as cell type annotation, and are highly consistent with human expert annotation, demonstrating the potential of AI for single-cell analysis. In the roundtable discussion titled "Intelligent Computing + Future Life: Innovative Digital and Intelligent Future", Zhu Hengshu, Director of BOSS Zhipin Vocational Science Laboratory, served as the moderator, and experts from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xiaomi Group, Zhijiang Laboratory and Hong Kong Chinese University (Shenzhen) conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as the application of artificial intelligence in different fields, the development of intelligent Internet of Things, the challenges and future of large models, and the application of AI in the field of security.

Ishikawa, a professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, pointed out that with the advent of deep learning, the boundaries between different research directions have become blurred, and the rise of multimodal large models has had a special impact on traditional fields such as natural language processing, computer vision and graph data analysis. It is important to actively embrace new technologies, and Ishikawa believes that the development of technology is a process of continuous exploration and adaptation, which requires continuous evaluation and discovery of the usefulness and limitations of large models in different application scenarios. Zhu Hengshu said that the BOSS Zhipin Career Science Lab focuses on interdisciplinary research in the field of "AI+ Career", using intelligent computing technologies such as big data and AI combined with social science theories to solve career-related problems, such as labor economics and intelligent recruitment, and also develops large language models and related technical standards for the recruitment field, demonstrating the laboratory's technical strength and industry contribution in the field of AI. Professor Guo Bin of Northwestern Polytechnical University emphasized the importance of AIGC content detection, especially in the application of future operations and AI fraud identification, and pointed out its potential influence on cyber cognitive security and social governance. For the future development direction, he focuses on intelligent Internet of Things and embodied intelligent systems, including the development of Mini/Micro deep learning models and their deployment in resource-constrained heterogeneous agents, and he believes that the cross-exploration of cognition, psychology and brain science, as well as the research on perceptual computing for embodied intelligence, are of great significance for the future application of AI. As a research expert in Zhijiang Lab, Xue Hui focuses on operating system security, network security, and mobile security. He believes that the large model has a double-edged sword role on both offensive and defensive sides in the field of security, which brings new possibilities in reconnaissance, camouflage, confrontation and decision-making capabilities, and points out the possible security risks brought by the large model and the prospect of using the large model to defend the large model. Wang Yujun, Director of Acoustic Voice at Xiaomi, shared concerns about cybersecurity, especially potential attacks on the Acoustic Model Training Server. He emphasized the close connection between AI and next-generation information technology, including computing power, platforms, terminals and scenarios, and he also hoped that domestic chips could increase investment to meet the current computing power needs and challenges, and at the same time hoped to form a positive cycle of cost and scenario applications to promote technological progress. In addition, he emphasized the potential of embodied intelligence in industrial manufacturing.

Experts discussed how AI technology can be better integrated into future lives, as well as the technical and security challenges that may be encountered in achieving this goal. At the same time, many new ideas and implementation paths were proposed.
