An extremely rare Yi "jumping tiger" ceremony

The Yi Aluo branch in Shuangbai County, Yunnan Province, has to "jump the tiger" every year. The "Jumping Tiger" ceremony is held every year on the eighth day of the first lunar month." The "Tiger Jumping" ceremony has a long history. The legend about the "jumping tiger" is like this: the ancestors of the Aluo people of the Yi tribe lived in the deep mountains and dense forests, and were often infested by jackals, leopards, pythons and other fierce beasts, and the crops were destroyed by wild dogs. At that time, the living conditions of their ancestors were very dangerous. In order to protect themselves, the Arro people draped tiger skins on their bodies and danced the tiger dance to guard the village. With the deterrence of the king of beasts, the village is peaceful, and the cattle and sheep are safe. Since then, the Yi people have been "jumping tigers" every year.

According to the locals, the Yi people were called "Luo Luo" in ancient times, and there are now more than 200,000 Yi people in Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture who call themselves "Luo Luopu". In the Yi language, "Luo Luo" means tiger, "Pu" means clan or person, and "Luo Luo Pu" means "tiger clan" or "tiger man". It can be said that the "Tiger Dance" is the legacy of the ancient tiger totem of the Yi nationality.

In Shuangbai County, Yunnan Province, the "Jumping Tigers" began with 8 tigers, and then increased by 1 tiger per day, increasing to 15 tigers on the 15th day of the first lunar month. The big tiger was the first to join, and the second to join was the little tiger. On the eighth day of the first lunar month, 8 people were selected by the sorcerer's divination, dressed in a blanket painted with tiger stripes, and painted with tiger stripes on their faces, hands and feet, dressed as tigers, forming a tiger team. At the head of the "Jumping Tigers" procession is an elderly man called "Duoxi", and the members of the tiger team are all dressed in felt painted with tiger skins and painted with tiger stripes all over their bodies. "Duoxi" held a "bang drum" and led a team of tigers to dance in front of every house. The "tigers" went from house to house to get rid of ghosts. At each house, the "tigers" danced while reciting blessings such as "gold and silver treasures will come in, and all diseases will go out." Each family gave pork and brown sugar as a reward. At night, fires are lit in the fields, and the "tigers" walk around the village. Under the leadership of "Duoxi", the "tigers" danced in the rice field to imitate the primitive reproduction, production and life. These dances depict the movements of ploughing the fields, harvesting seedlings and threshing, and going up to the mountains to hunt.

On the night of the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, after all 15 tigers appeared, the whole village set up wine to celebrate, and carnival all night long. At this time, all the men, women and children of the village participated together, jumping from the moon to midnight, sending the "tiger" out of the village, and then cooking and eating together outside the village, praying for good weather, abundant harvest, happiness and health in the coming year.
