Abstract:From the original Columbia circle, to the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products, to the well-known fashion and trendy literary landmarks in Shanghai, Shangsheng Xin's multiple identities have undergone changes and continue to burst out with vitality, and the second phase of the park will be opened from the second quarter.
Shangsheng Xinsuo is located in the historical area of Xinhua Road, which is famous as "Shanghai's No. 1 Garden Road". In 2018, the first phase of Shangsheng New Institute was officially opened to the public. The second phase of Shangsheng Xinsuo, which has attracted much attention from the public, is located on the south side of the first phase, with a total of 5 new multi-storey buildings planned, which will add open spaces such as streets, inner courtyards, and squares, and have office, commercial, leisure and entertainment functions, helping the construction of a "15-minute community life circle".
In April 2023, the first building of the second phase and the first square area, Xiangzhang Plaza, will be opened to the public, and brands such as Ozark Hub Outdoor Life Pavilion, Bananai, and Reebok&nautica retro joint stores will be settled in succession. At present, four other buildings in the second phase have been completed and are expected to open from the second quarter of this year. The second phase of the park will add multiple entrances and exits, and set up underground parking spaces.
In terms of brand entry, more than 10 brands such as Blue Bottle Coffee and Sigma have been confirmed to settle in. The second phase of investment promotion work continues to advance, and will focus on the introduction of outdoor sports, natural environmental protection and other brands that can provide more emotional value. As one of the benchmark projects of urban renewal in Changning District, Shanghai Vanke has been responsible for the renovation and operation of Shangsheng New Law Firm since 2016. Following the concept of "respecting the historical context, continuing the urban context, dialogue between old and new buildings, and sharing and symbiosis in diversity", Shanghai Vanke has repaired and protected the historical buildings in the park, renovated and upgraded the decoration of industrial buildings and the landscape of the park, and transformed the original closed factory area into an open creative park and civic activity space.
In recent years, the first phase of Shangsheng Xinsuo has been constantly changing, and the commercial formats have become increasingly diversified, becoming a 7X24-hour open public cultural block loved by the public. Exhibitions, plays, concerts, lectures, comedies and other rich and diverse cultural activities are staged in various spaces of the park throughout the year, and the unique literary and artistic temperament formed by the artistic activities and the atmosphere of the old buildings allows the public to truly immerse themselves in history and read about architecture.
The history of Shangsheng Xinsuo can be traced back to the twenties and thirties of the 20th century, and the three existing historical buildings in the park, the Columbia Country Club, the Navy Club and the attached swimming pool, and the Sun Ke Villa, were built at that time.
Columbia Country Club
Columbia Circle
In the 20s of the 20th century, Puyi Real Estate in the United States developed the Columbia Circle project around Anhesi Road (now Xinhua Road) and Columbia Road (now Panyu Road). The Columbia Country Club is the starting point and an important component of the site, and it is the representative work of American architect Hazzard in the early days of its opening in Shanghai.

In 1927, the club was opened as a place of life for sports activities and social gatherings in the western suburbs of Shanghai, especially popular in the summer for its chic balconies and swimming pools. After 1952, the club was used as the office and staff activities of the "Shanghai Institute of Biological Products".
In December 2020, the club opened as the first store of Tsutaya Bookstore in Shanghai. Tsutaya Bookstore, a lifestyle proposal bookstore, organically integrates urban renewal and cultural inheritance, and uses museum-like scene design to give a sense of reading ritual, building a new art and culture source of about 2,000 square meters.

The Navy Club was built in 1924 as the American Country Association Gymnasium Bowling Alley, and the Columbia Club and the attached swimming pool were originally integrated, collectively known as the American Country Association. Later, it was the workshop of the medium steamer room of the "Shanghai Institute of Biological Products". During the renovation, the dust hood in the workshop was transformed into an air conditioning outlet, which not only retains the historical traces, but also makes reasonable use.
The attached swimming pool connected to the club is a rare "English-made" outdoor swimming pool in Shanghai. The swimming pool mosaic specially retained during the renovation has a clear appearance, and the sheep's head sculpture originally hidden in the central alcove of the north façade has been re-introduced to the world. Today, the Navy Club and its affiliated swimming pool are used as a show and event exhibition space for various fashion events.
Villa Sunko

Red terracotta, handmade diamond plastering, spiral columns, cast iron balconies, arched doors and windows...... Designed by the famous architect Hudak, Villa Sunco is a blend of Spanish and Italian Renaissance styles. In 1989, Sun Ke Villa was included in the Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
The south façade of the building is convex in the middle, and the entrance porch has a large platform, three pointed arch doors and floor-to-ceiling windows. On the second floor, there is a large balcony, and the window frames are decorated with baroque lines in various forms such as flat arches, arc arches, and round arches. The red tubular tile roof, teak staircase, Liu'an ribbed floor, and the garden in the courtyard are winding and secluded.
On November 14, 2020, Sun Ke Villa was opened to the public and unveiled its first exhibition "Ideal Place: Shangsheng Xinsuo Urban Renewal and Historical Documents Exhibition". Nowadays, the park has adopted protective opening measures, that is, when exhibitions and other activities are held in the villa, citizens and tourists can visit the Sun Ke villa simultaneously by making an appointment. The rest of the time, Sun Ke Villa is temporarily closed to the public.
