The Indian staged the most inspirational story at the Australian Open! Finally tasted the first crown in 16 years!

Sixteen years after his first Australian Open appearance, Indian legend Popana became the oldest person to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era. Popana, who turns 44 in March, won his first men's doubles Grand Slam title with Australia's Abden. The pair narrowly defeated Italy's Bolili and Vavasori 7-6(0), 7-5 to win the Australian Open.

It was a milestone moment for Popana, who had previously finished runner-up twice in Grand Slam tournaments. He also won the mixed doubles title at the 2017 French Open. Of course, there is another important milestone waiting for Popana, as the Indian will occupy the world number one spot in the men's doubles from Monday, becoming the oldest world number one on the ATP Tour.

It was a fairytale result for Popana, who, at one stage of his career, considered quitting the sport due to a lack of success. He has won 25 Tour titles in his career so far, with the first victory coming in 2008. Of course, Popana is not the first Indian men's Grand Slam champion. After Paz and Bhupati, Popana became only the third Indian in the Open era to win a Grand Slam men's doubles title.
