How terrifying can a wheel be?

Over the past millennium, The Breaking Wheel, or the Execution Wheel, or simply the Wheel, has been one of the most notorious and feared instruments of torture and execution. It was used against robbers, thieves, and later against arsonists and murderers. The last known case of execution using the Wheel of Breaker occurred in 1841.

Those convicted of murder, rape, treason, and/or robbery were sentenced to Broken Wheel Execution, sometimes referred to as "broken on wheels" or "tortured on wheels," and they were taken to public stage scaffolding, where they were tied to the ground.

The executive wheel was usually a large wooden spoked wheel, the same as used on wooden transporters and wagons (often with iron rims), sometimes deliberately modified to have rectangular iron thrust wheels attached and extending in a blade-like manner from part of the rim. The main goal of the first step is to dismember the body in pain, not to die. Therefore, the most common form starts with breaking the leg bone.

To do this, the executioner smashed the broken wheel against the condemned person's shin bone, and then gradually moved it to the arm. Here, the rhythm of movement and the number of strikes are regulated, and sometimes the number of spokes on the wheels. To enhance its effect, sharp wood was usually placed under the prisoner's joints.

In the second step, the body of the sentenced person is tied to another wooden spoked wheel, which is achieved by his broken limb or by tying him to the wheel with a rope. Then, the wheels are erected on pillars or poles, similar to crucification. After that, the executioner will behead or strangle the sentenced person, depending on the final sentence.

In addition, there is the lighting of a fire under the wheel, or the direct throwing of criminals from the "Broken Wheel" into the fire. Sometimes, a small gallows is also set on wheels, for example, if there is a guilty verdict for theft in addition to murder.
