Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

Hello everyone, I'm a cat

With the change of seasons, the temperature gradually decreases, I can obviously feel the coolness outdoors, and I can't open the window to blow the wind when I get home, but the indoor air is not circulating will lead to a large number of air microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, affecting our health. For the sake of their own and their family's respiratory health, more and more people will choose to buy an air purifier to purify indoor air. So how can we choose the right air purifier?

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

This article is mainly divided into three parts: "Air purifier purchase points", "Popular purifier performance comparison", and "Popular purifier measured comparison", I hope it will be helpful to everyone (• ̀ω•́ )✧

First, how to choose a cost-effective air purifier!?

1, see [Budget]

There are many types of air purifiers on the market, and the price difference is also very large, we can consider it in combination with our own budget when purchasing.

Generally speaking, the purification efficiency of the 1-2k price purifier is low, and the actual purification effect is not so strong, which is more suitable for use in the bedroom; The performance of the 2-4K machine is generally good, which is also the most volatile price of the purifier, and friends who pursue cost performance can choose among them; Purifiers above 5K may have more outstanding performance in some aspects, but the overall performance is actually not much different from 2-4K, and the overall cost performance is not high.

2, look at [CADR value and CCM value]

In addition to looking at the budget, we also need to understand the basic parameters of air purifiers:

The CADR value can be simply understood as the air purification efficiency, and the higher the value, the higher the purification effect.

CCM value refers to the continuous purification capacity of the purifier, the higher the value, the longer the service life of the filter, so when purchasing, pay attention to how much these two values are, so that you can understand the purification effect of the machine and the life of the filter element.

The old CCM international standard particulate matter and formaldehyde are divided into P1-P4, F1-F4, the new international standard is to determine the specific lower limit of CCM value through the specific CADR value, and Xiaomi 4max, Honeywell KJ820F in the official website are P4/F4, but there is no specific value to see, Arcach Z02 has a clear value on the official website, CCM particulate matter: 21686mg, formaldehyde CCM value: >2000mg, this value is much higher than the old international standard, So the filter has a long service life.

3, look at [technology to purify the air]

(1) Sterilization technology

Because HEPA filters can filter out bacteria and viruses in the air to a certain extent, most air purifiers have basic sterilization functions. However, because the means of physical filtration can only reduce bacteria in the air, but cannot effectively kill bacteria, many purifiers will improve the sterilization effect through the blessing of various technologies.

The commonly used sterilization technology of purifiers are ultraviolet sterilization, plasma sterilization, negative ion sterilization, etc., and a good air purifier will combine a variety of sterilization technologies to maximize the effect.

A small number of purifiers on the market also have the "disinfection" certification issued by the Health Commission, which are air disinfection machines with sterilization effects that can meet the disinfection requirements, which are more suitable for people with weak physique than ordinary purifiers.

(2) Aldehyde removal technology

Activated carbon has a well-developed pore structure and surface area, which can effectively adsorb free formaldehyde in the air, so the filter screen of most aldehyde removal purifiers will have activated carbon.

However, the adsorption capacity of activated carbon is very limited, and the filter will have the risk of secondary release of pollutants after adsorption saturation, so it is best to choose a purifier that can decompose formaldehyde into harmless substances.

(3) Technology to purify other pollutants

In addition to bacteria, viruses, formaldehyde, indoor air there are dust mites, PM2.5, allergens, odors and other pollutants endanger our health, so it is recommended that you give priority to air purifiers that can purify a variety of pollutants at the same time, the more comprehensive their removal technology, the safer we will be to use.

4. Other detail design

The detailed design of air purifiers is often related to our experience, such as the intelligent screen display that displays the air quality in real time, the smart child lock that prevents children from touching by mistake, and the smooth universal wheel that is convenient for the whole house to move.

Most of the purifiers in previous years did not have wheels, and every time they wanted to change rooms, they were carried over, and now many models have four-corner universal casters, so you don't have to worry about this, and you can easily move effortlessly with random pushing.

2. 3 air purifiers cross-reviewed

In order to choose a cost-effective air purifier, I selected 3 popular air purifiers of 2-4k on the market for actual comparison, they are: Xiaomi 4max, Arcach Z02 and Honeywell KJ820F.

1. Performance parameter design

I have listed the basic parameters of these three purifiers in the following table, you can compare them:

Let's take a look at the comparison of the performance parameters of the three units:

Akachi adopts the patented technology of double air duct and double circulation, so the purification efficiency is very high, and the large apartment can also be done, coupled with its long filter life, or the "elimination" certified air disinfection machine, the overall cost performance is very high;

Xiaomi is the lowest priced of the three purifiers, the purification efficiency and filter life are good, but the size of the fuselage is too large, which is more suitable for large families; Honeywell's purification efficiency is good and the sleep gear noise is extremely light, so the sense of use is really good, but because it only marks particulate matter P4 (≥ 12000mg) and formaldehyde F4 (≥1500mg), we can only roughly judge its specific CCM value.

2. Appearance volume design

First of all, the color matching of these three models is very good, can be applied to most family environments, daily use in the living room or bedroom placement is also high, but from the picture can be felt that the volume of Mijia is the largest, because this time is to test the purification effect separately, I moved the machine from the first floor to the third floor, Mijia's body size is long and heavier, almost not tired to death.

This machine is put on the cloakroom side, its size is 386mm long, 386mm wide, 975mm high, weight about 18KG, almost half a height with the wardrobe, this body weight has a floor users are more uncomfortable, if it is a single flat floor can be pushed to walk, the stairs can only be moved by brute force, and its height and width are indeed relatively large, for small houses will occupy more places.

Akachi I am placed in the small room on the third floor here, its shape appearance is my favorite, the appearance is also very high, the point is that it is really small, 310mm long, 290mm wide, 658mm high, weight about 10.4KG, and Mijia is less than half the weight, in these 3 models this is the easiest to move up, small and portable and light, will not occupy the home place ~

Honeywell KJ820F is placed in the photography room on the third floor, the size of this machine is also relatively large, the shape design is round, size: 422x399x595mm, weight about 13.8KG, the height is slightly shorter than the Akachi, but the width is much larger, is the widest design in these three, so it is placed indoors is more occupied.

3. Air duct and fan design

Honeywell KJ820F

This adopts a double-sided air inlet design, sucking in from both sides→ after filtration→ then air is discharged from the top, and the air is inlet on both sides to achieve the filtration effect. The filter is a combination of HEPA filter + honeycomb carbon technology + iron mesh viscous carbon technology, which can purify indoor air more efficiently.

Honeywell's fan is one on each side, the power is 85W, in the wind speed test, the air effect is not so high, the fan is best to choose a double fan, so that the wind speed effect is faster, the cleaning ability will be better. The drawer-type structure filter can be removed, but the external iron mesh cannot be removed, and it will be more troublesome to take care of it later.

Arcachi

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

General air purifiers are mostly single-sided/double-sided inlet + single-sided outlet, or annular inlet top outlet, and often only one fan is working. The power of Akachi is 90W, front and rear double-sided air inlet + left and right double-sided outlet, and then combined with a rare dual fan design to form a four-in-four-out circulating air duct, which is equivalent to two air purifiers working, so it has ultra-high purification efficiency that does not match the small size.

Akachi adopts a composite filter composed of primary filter + silver ion HEPA filter + aldehyde removal skeleton + titanium-photocatalyst screen, combined with the quadruple UVC inside the fuselage and the tens of millions of plasma actively released, which can effectively eliminate PM2.5, bacteria, viruses, formaldehyde, odors, allergens and other air pollution problems.

The magnetic door is very convenient, as long as the shell is close to it, it will automatically adsorb up, no effort to install, and the removable design, the subsequent cleaning of the shell will be much more convenient.

Mijia

This is the left and right air inlet top outlet, single fan design, the power is 75W, the power is the lowest of the three, in the subsequent use, Mijia this purification speed will be slower, the time will be longer.

The filter adopts washable primary filter + antiviral coating + antibacterial coating + nano-scale filter material + porous activated carbon, 5-stage depth filtration, and efficiently removes debris, bacteria, viruses and formaldehyde.

Third, the effect of purification test

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

In order to more intuitively show the purification effect of these three purifiers, I will conduct a comparison of actual measurements, including sterilization test, PM2.5 test, formaldehyde removal test, wind speed test and noise test, which of these three purifiers has the better effect? Let's move on~

1. Sterilization test

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

I bought it

Three bacterial petri dishes, disassembled and put in their respective rooms, and then purified with the low wind speed of the purifier, I spent 3 and a half days here to test to see which dish will breed more colonies.

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

From left to right, the colonies on the Akachi, millet, Honeywell, and Akachi Petri dishes are light yellow, the area is not large and the number is also the smallest; Millet petri dishes have a high proportion of black colonies and a large colony area, but the area near the purifier of the petri dish is relatively clean; Honeywell Petri dishes have smaller colonies and more light-colored colonies, but colonies are also numerous and evenly distributed.

The sterilization effect of these three machines is still very different, and the most prominent performance here is the air disinfection machine of Akachi.

In order to test the rigor, I also added apple control, turned on the air purifier, put it overnight, you can see the apple that has not undergone air purification under the natural room temperature, the mold becomes very obvious, and the other 3 apples, after air purification of different machines, have obvious improvements, of which the effect of Akachi is the best.

2. Except PM2.5 test

In order to simulate the limit of PM2.5 seriously exceeding the standard, I specially selected smoke cakes as test props. Light the same amount of smoke cake in each room and raise the PM2.5 value detected by the sensor to the highest peak, then turn on the highest gear of the purifier and start the timekeeping, recording the time it takes for the three purifiers to drop from the highest peak to 100 value, and from 100 value to the blue label state (air health).

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

The room is filled with smoke after each cake is lit, with the upper limit of PM2.5 detection of 600 μg/m³ for the Xiaomi sensors and the peak PM2.5 peak of 999 μg/m³ for the Honeywell and Arcach sensors.

From the highest detection peak to 100μg/m³, Xiaomi took 14 minutes and 46 seconds, Honeywell took 17 minutes and 39 seconds, and Arkachi took 13 minutes and 29 seconds; Going from 100 μg/m³ to Blue Label (Air Health), Xiaomi took 9 minutes and 49 seconds, Honeywell took 8 minutes and 41 seconds, and Arcetci took 8 minutes and 26 seconds.

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

From the speed and efficiency of removing PM2.5, Arkach > Xiaomi > Honeywell, but the rooms of Akachi and Honeywell basically did not smell peculiar smell after the test, and there was still a little smoke in the room where the Xiaomi purifier was placed.

3. Formaldehyde removal test

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

Removing aldehyde should be the most worrying thing for every friend living in a new home, after all, the harm of formaldehyde is very large, and it will continue to be released for 3-15 years. In order to simulate the environment where formaldehyde seriously exceeds the standard when moving into a new house, and at the same time to evaluate the aldehyde removal ability of these three machines more rigorously, I specially bought formaldehyde solution and formaldehyde tester this time.

The test method is to pour the formaldehyde solution on a small cup, detect the initial value, and then use the detector to detect the →effect after 10 minutes → 20 minutes with a detector to see which machine has the best ability to remove formaldehyde.

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

Although it was a small drop, the value of the room was in a hazard state of 0.81, and I also wore a gas mask when I tested it.

Since the volatilization of formaldehyde solution is uncontrollable, the initial test concentration of several purifiers has certain differences:

Millet 0.81mg/m³, Arcach 0.88mg/m³, Honeywell 0.72mg/m³.

After 10 minutes of purifying the highest grade of the purifier turned on:

millet 0.24mg/m³, Arcach 0.17mg/m³, Honeywell 0.35mg/m³;

After 20 minutes of purification:

Millet 0.16mg/m³, Arcach 0.07mg/m³, Honeywell 0.16mg/m³

To sum up, Akachi's formaldehyde purification efficiency is the highest, followed by millet, and Honeywell's is slightly slower.

4. Wind speed test

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

Mijia's wind speed has 3 gears, the lowest gear is 0.4, the wind speed is very small, the highest gear is 4.5, open to the maximum gear actually feel that the wind speed is not large, plus the power of this machine is only 75W, for purification and sterilization will also be much reduced.

Akachi has 5 gears of wind speed can be adjusted, the lowest gear is 0.6, the highest gear is 7.8, the wind speed personal feeling is more obvious, open the maximum gear wind speed is the largest of these three, there is a relatively large wind speed blowing, but the noise will not be too large, wind speed and noise I think is more moderate.

Honeywell is a rotary control, no direct gear adjustment, here is divided into 3 gears to adjust, the lowest is 0.2, the highest gear is 7.2 wind speed, in the highest gear when this wind speed is relatively large, but the noise is the largest here, if the area square is relatively small house, it will feel more noisy.

5. Noise test

Can an air purifier really purify the air? How to choose a cost-effective air disinfection machine?

Mijia's wind speed 1-2 gear difference is not much, so the noise of 1-2 gear is not bad, the noise of 3rd gear is 61.6 decibels, it is relatively noisy, in the actual use process, open the maximum gear sitting in the room, you can feel the sound is turning.

Honeywell can see the icon above, I divided into three gears to test, the smallest is 43.22, the largest is 65.9, fast 66 decibels, when in use, the speed inside the machine is very large, when testing the wind speed above, it can be clear, its wind speed is large so the noise is relatively large, this depends on the trade-off, but the purification effect of this machine is lower than that of Arcach.

Akachi's noise test, the lowest gear is 40.1, the highest gear is 58.6, is the smallest of the three, in actual use, the internal operation of the machine is not loud, even if the highest gear is running, in daily life will not feel noisy, this is actually quite important, if the noise is too loud when running, it may eventually be idle because of this problem. Therefore, a low-decibel purifier is also very important, and the effect of the Arkach is best in this.

IV. Summary

Akachi Z02 has high purification efficiency, long filter life, and it is both an air purifier and an air disinfection machine, one machine can simultaneously remove bacteria, viruses, formaldehyde, odors, allergens and other pollutants, allowing us to breathe fresh and clean air. And it is small in size, low in noise, suitable for various scenes such as living room, study, bedroom, etc., and the sense of use is very good.

The purification and sterilization function of Mijia 4max is medium, which can achieve the basic sterilization effect, but the time to remove aldehyde is longer, and the single fan + power of 75w is lower, so the time for purification and dehyde removal is relatively long, the wind speed 1~3 gear effect is medium, the external unit is relatively heavy and long, if it needs to be lifted will be more laborious.

Honeywell's wind speed is the highest of these three, but at the same time the noise is also large, the filter is HEPA, the H13 filtration effect is good, the aldehyde removal technology is on the medium side, and there is also automatic decomposition technology, but the detail page does not give a specific CCM value, and the price of the machine has also gone to 3599, which is the most expensive of the three.

Overall use, I think Akachi is the most cost-effective of the three, integrating sterilization/aldehyde/dust removal and other functions, small shape and easy to move, very suitable for new house decoration families/mother and baby families/pet families with high air quality requirements.
