Edvard Munch; 12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His 1893 work The Scream has become one of the most acclaimed paintings in Western art.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and fear of inheriting his family's inherited mental illness. While studying at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in Christiania (present-day Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jaeger, who urged him to depict his emotional and psychological states ("soul painting"); This reveals his unique style.

Travel brings new influences and outlets. In Paris, he learned a lot from Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, especially their use of color. In Berlin, he met and painted for the Swedish playwright August Strindberg, who subsequently began a series of important paintings, later known to him as The Ribbon of Life, depicting a series of deep themes such as love, anxiety, jealousy and betrayal immersed in the atmosphere.

The Kiss is an oil on canvas painting by Norwegian symbolist artist Edvard Munch, completed in 1897. The Kiss is part of his Frieze of Life, which depicts the stages of the relationship between men and women, and The Kiss is the realization of the themes he created. It has been going on since 1888/89: a couple kissing and their faces fusing together, symbolizing their unity. The work was exhibited at the Munch Museum in Oslo as early as 1903.

It depicts a couple surrounded by darkness, with only a hint of daylight coming through the window, which is mostly obscured by curtains. They embraced each other and seemed to become one, their faces becoming single, featureless shapes. Art critic Roberta Smith noted that Munch liked "long, somewhat husky strokes that are dirtier than painting." The painting is similar to another work of the same subject created by Munch during the same period, but simpler.
