The multi-purpose vessel OCTOPUS 12.6&12 designed by the Shanghai Shipyard was awarded the AIP certificate by Det Norske Veritas

On April 17, the 12,600-ton multi-purpose vessel OCTOPUS 12.6 (HL500) and the 12,000-ton multi-purpose vessel OCTOPUS 12 developed and designed by Shanghai Shipbuilding Research and Design Institute of China State Shipbuilding Group were officially awarded the Approval-in-Principle (AIP) certificate by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), marking that the 12,000-ton multi-purpose ship of the Shanghai Shipbuilding Institute ushered in a new green and intelligent generation.

These two types of vessels were jointly completed by the Shanghai Shipyard, DNV and Toepfer Transport in Germany for 8 months based on the concept of forward development and ship-type platform, and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has met the requirements of Phase III, and the nitrogen oxide emissions have met the Tier III standard, and are equipped with the intelligent energy efficiency management system (DOSS-E) in the DOSS® system independently developed by the Shanghai Shipyard, and can choose two-stroke or four-stroke main engine, or methanol as fuel.

OCTOPUS 12.6 (HL500) compared with the previous generation of 12,500 tons multi-purpose ship F500 (2014), the performance indicators have been greatly improved, using a single cargo hold design, equipped with two 250 ton deck cranes, the main scale and lifting capacity are basically the same, the superstructure is optimized from the original arrangement in the tail to the head, which can obtain a better driving and maneuvering vision, the deck cargo area is increased by about 40%, and the fuel consumption is reduced by about 15%, which is more suitable for the shipment of large engineering equipment.

Compared with the previous generation of 12,000 ton multipurpose ship (2004), OCTOPUS 12 is more compact in main scale, low construction cost and good economy, equipped with two 80-ton deck cranes, using a large and one small double cargo hold design, the cargo hold capacity is further increased, and the fuel consumption is reduced by about 56%, which is more suitable for the shipment of general cargo and bulk cargo.

The OCTOPUS ship platform can well cover the 12,000-ton multi-purpose ship series, which is not only conducive to shortening the overall construction period, but also conducive to customers to quickly calculate the construction cost. Based on the OCTOPUS 12.6 platform, the 149.9-meter-long ship with a deadweight of 12,600 tons maintains the same bow and stern, and can be expanded into the OCTOPUS 12.6XL (extended version) with a length of 159.9 meters and a deadweight of 14,000 tons, or it can be expanded to the OCTOPUS 12.6XS (shortened version) with a length of 139.9 meters and a deadweight of 11,100 tons. Based on the OCTOPUS 12 platform, the 138.0 m long and 12,000 DWT vessel can be expanded to the OCTOPUS 12XS (shortened version) – 128.0 m long and 10,700 DWT.

As a leader in the R&D and design of the global multi-purpose vessel, the octopus "OCTOPUS" series multi-purpose vessel developed by the Shanghai Shipyard has undertaken nearly 400 design orders, with a leading market share in the world.

With excellent R&D and design capabilities, the various series of OCTOPUS multi-purpose ship products developed by the Shanghai Shipyard range from the "small and beautiful" 3,500-ton ship type to the "large and complete" 77,000-ton ship type, from conventional power to alternative fuel, and the product lineage covers nearly 40 types of ships. These include the Heavy Lift series of heavy-lift multi-purpose vessels, the general cargo ship series "OCTOPUS G", the pulp and wood chip ship "OCTOPUS W" (Woodchip) series, the alternative fuel multi-purpose vessel "GREEN OCTOPUS" series and the intelligent multi-purpose vessel "iOCTOPUS" (Intelligent).

With their flexible loading capacity, spacious deck loading area and superior economy, these types have become the "star" ship types in the global marine market.

The ship-type platform refers to the modular platform design of the ship, which keeps the bow and tail of the ship unchanged, and quickly generates a new ship type by lengthening or shortening the cargo hold area, which is convenient for early research and development quotation, shortens the construction period, and meets the personalized requirements of customers.
