This article was originally published in the "Reading Music" column of the Xinmin Evening News edited by Mr. Cao Zhengwen, and later included in the book "100 Famous Artists Talk about Reading" edited by Cao Zhengwen. The article tells the story of his reading concept and reading in middle school. He believes that "the joy of reading lies in reading by oneself, reading for the sake of reading", and believes that 14-20 years old is the golden time for people to read. A middle school student who only reads textbooks is hopeless. The original title of this article was "Reading Happy Reading".

Shi Jingcun: A middle school student who only reads textbooks is hopeless Zhu Yongxin pressed:

The editor of "Reading Music" came to ask me to write an article about the method, experience, or other reading methods. The requirements are wide, but the number of words is limited to one thousand. It seems that I can only contribute some fragmentary opinions in condensed quotations.

My recent daily routine has either been ordered to write or review on behalf of others. In the process of work, it is always necessary to find a few old and new books and check them. Although I read every day, I don't have any fun. From this I have summed up a reading principle: reading for business work, reading for the service of others, there is no Coke.

Therefore, from the positive affirmation: the joy of reading lies in reading oneself, reading for the sake of reading.

According to my own reading experience, I enjoyed reading books with relish, and I could not release the scrolls, only in the period from fourteen or fifteen to my twenties.

I saw ancient and modern Chinese and foreign novels from fairy tales, and every time I read a book, I merged with the characters in the book. It was as if he were Ji Qiansheng, Wu Song, Li Kui, Huang Tianba, Zhang Junrui, Jia Baoyu, or Don Quixote, Gulliver, and Dartan.

After the age of twenty, unfortunately, I embarked on the road of loving literature, although I continued to read some novel books, but at this time, they were no longer novel books, but literary books. "Water Margin" read a second time, the third time, the characters in the book can no longer be one with me. What I notice is the similarities and differences between the author's method of describing Pan Jinlian and Pan Qiaoyun, the advantages and disadvantages of the seventy-fold version and the one hundred and twenty-fold version, and Jin Shengsi's comments are credible and untrustworthy. Looking at the novel with this eye, even if there was a coke at the time, after all, it was not the fun of adolescence.

Whether it is reading novels or other miscellaneous books of literature and history, adolescence is to read with feelings, and the more middle-aged and old after the age of twenty, the more rational it is to read. Just like eating vegetables, adolescents are in pursuit of deliciousness, and after middle age, we must pay attention to nutritional value. I miss my reading experience from fourteen to fifteen to twenty years old. I have read a lot of books, all for the sake of reading, there is no utilitarian concept, what I have obtained can be said to be pure reading music, but it is also this kind of reading pleasure that has cultivated my habit of reading happily all my life. At the same time, it also laid a good foundation for me to read books later in a meticulous and rational analysis method. Because, reading with feelings, it seems easier to absorb knowledge, but this is unconscious.

Whether a person can read often, who is interested in continuously improving his cultural level and constantly expanding his knowledge, is completely determined by the middle school stage. I sincerely advise middle school Chinese teachers to do a good job in guiding middle school students to read outside the classroom. What books middle school students should read does not have to be too strict, mainly because they must be good at cultivating their habit of loving reading. A high school graduate, someone who doesn't read a book other than a textbook, is hopeless. And people who have only read novels all their lives are also hopeless.
