Former site of Santa Maria's Girls' High School
The history of St. Mary's Girls' High School can be traced back to 1851, when Ms. Jones, an American Christian Church, established the Wenji Girls' School, and Ms. Grande established the Biwen Girls' School; 30 years later, the two schools merged to form St. Mary's Girls' School, located behind St. John's College. In the 20th century, due to the gradual increase in students, the school purchased 70 acres of land on Baili South Road (now Changning Road), established a new closed Spanish-style school building, and officially moved in July 1923.
After liberation, the Shanghai Municipal Education Bureau took over Santa Maria Girls' High School and Chinese and Western Girls' High School, and the two schools merged into one to become the third girls' high school in Shanghai. On the site of the original St. Mary's Girls' High School, a new college, Shanghai Textile College, was later the Changning Branch of the School of Textiles of Donghua University.
Today, the bell tower of the girls' school has once again echoed the simple and melodious bells. With the entry of Raffles City Changning, after careful repair and reinforcement, the quaint and elegant appearance of the ancient bell tower has once again entered people's vision, witnessing the modern life of the new era of the city with another attitude.
Around the 1,000-square-meter Ruyin Lawn, in addition to the bell tower, there are also four independent small buildings, each redesigned and built according to the old appearance of the school at the beginning of its construction.
