Today is Penguin Awareness Day. This is a colony of king penguins walking in the Falkland Islands. King penguins rank second in size in the "penguin world", after their cousin, the emperor penguin. King penguins wear "tuxedos" to make them look gentle like gentlemen. More importantly, this is their camouflage color. When king penguins dive into the ocean in search of food, black feathers can confuse predators in the sky, while their snow-white belly can confuse prey in the sea.
King penguins are super diving and can dive more than 300 feet underwater to hunt delicious squid and lanternfish, and some can even reach depths of 1,000 feet! These flightless birds dive gracefully. But on land, they are less graceful, walking wobbly or sliding around on their round stomachs. "
The Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas Islands, are archipelagos located on the continental shelf of Patagonia in the South Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago includes East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 islets with a total area of 12,200 square kilometres. The Falkland Islands are British Overseas Territories with internal self-government, with the United Kingdom responsible for its defence and foreign affairs. The capital of the archipelago is Stanley, located on East Falkland.
The archipelago sits on the border of subarctic and temperate maritime climatic regions, and the two main islands have mountains up to 700 meters above sea level. There is a large bird population on the island, but due to competition from alien species, many species of birds no longer breed on the main island. The main economic activities in the islands include fishing, tourism and sheep farming, which focuses on the export of high-quality wool.
