Step 1: Start at the bottom of the cotton bag and fold it upwards about 2 cm or so. Place a wooden stick in the fold, then flip the bag over and fold it again at the same 2 cm position, then put another wooden stick on top. (This is also called an accordion fold.) Continue to fold and place the sticks on each side until the entire bag is folded up. When you reach the top of the bag, wrap it tightly around the bag with a few rubber bands to ensure a stable fold.
Step 2: Keep the bag and dye in the open air or spread a rag on the floor of your home so you don't stain any surfaces. Wear rubber gloves and apply dye on both sides of the bag. Apply enough dye until there is nothing white on the bag. Allow the dye to dry overnight.
Step 3: Once the dye is dry, remove the rubber band and craft stick.
Step 4: The bag should now look striped. To get a checkered pattern, repeat the accordion folding, this time from left to right, not bottom to top, as you did before. Finally, fix the folds with rubber bands.
Step 5: Apply the dye to the edge of the bag again, but be careful not to apply too much.
Step 6: Allow the dye to dry overnight.
Step 7: After the dye has dried, wash the art bag separately (do not put it in the washing machine and wash it with other clothes). Finally let it air dry and you'll get a traditional tie-dye cloth bag!
